Xbox Scorpio is "not going to do anything for you" unless you have a 4K TV

If you don't have a 4K TV, the Xbox Scorpio is not for you, according to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Spencer was asked why consumers should opt for the Xbox One S over the Scorpio.

"What TV do you have?" he asked.

"A standard 1080p TV," was the reply.

"Then you should buy this box, because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you," said Spencer. "Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see.

"Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you."

Talking about the price of the new console, he continued, "Scorpio is for the person who's got a 4K television, who's really focused on 4K gaming. It's going to be a premium price over what we're selling [the Xbox One S] for, and both of them will exist in the market at the same time. Scorpio is for your 4K gamer. And that's what we designed it for."

For those sticking with a 1080p telly, the Xbox One S appears to be more of an aesthetic upgrade, as the slight power advantage is so minute that it will have “literally no impact” on game performance.

What are your thoughts? Do you have a 4K TV already? Will the Scorpio make you run out and buy one? Let us know in the comments.
