Microsoft’s strategy for Xbox will rely less on third-party exclusives and more on first-party content.
Microsoft’s Phil Spencer was in attendance at China Joy 2015 last week and shared his thoughts about the balance between first and third-party content. Speaking to Chinese site Gamecores, Spencer said that Xbox fans will be seeing fewer and fewer third-party deals going forward.
“My Strategy is more around our own first party franchises, and investing in franchises that we own. I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third party exclusives isn’t our long term strategy,” said Spencer.
Spencer reiterated earlier comments that this year is looking like the best in Xbox’s history when it comes to first-party exclusives. “It’s great to have Tomb Raider as part of our line-up, but investing in first party, you’ll see more of that at gamescom next week, is really core to our strategy,” he aded.
Spencer’s comments are certainly being reflected in Xbox’s presentations. The company is planning a gamescom 2015 show full of exclusive titles, itself following the E3 2015 briefing that also emphasised first-party products.
This strategy couldn’t be more different from Sony’s, which continues to put greater emphasis on third-party content in a number of games.
