Use of 1080p 3D in PS3 games being limited, says Sony

By Stephany Nunneley, Saturday, 17 July 2010 16:53 GMT

Sony’s senior development manager, Simon Benson, told attendees during his 3D demo at Develop this week the guidelines for 3D gaming on PS3 limit the display resolution at 720p.

According to Benson, games that run at 1080p like Super Stardust HD, are downscaled to two 720p images, even with PS3 able to display a 1080p 3D image.

Benson said upping resolution interferes with 60fps, and while a “more cinematic game” is better suited for the lower frame rate and higher resolution, Sony’s current guidelines don’t allow a higher setting.

Benson claimed with 3D in 720p, trained computer graphics artists could barely tell the difference between it or 1080p, let alone those with an untrained eye.

A firmware update for 3D Blu-Ray movies at 1080p will hit PS3 later this year.
