Supreme Commander 360 takes battering from IGN

IGN has given the Xbox 360 version of Supreme Commander 4.5/10 in one of the game’s first reviews.

Complaints include slowdown, crashing, poor graphics compared to the PC version and impaired AI. The article writer questioned how the game got its certification from Microsoft in such a state.

Along with a limit of four-player multiplayer instead of eight, new interface issues and AI that apparently couldn’t plot its way out of a paper bag, Erik Brudvig closed the review with this line: “The game that PC owners adored in 2007 has received a poor port to Xbox 360 that is more of a disappointment than anything else.”

Ouch.

Supreme Commander 360 hits shelves

supremecommander4.jpg

The Xbox 360 version of RTS Supreme Commander launched today, complete with its console-tailored interface.

As well as new controls, the game also features 360-exclusive units, maps and multiplayer modes, although there’s no option to play against owners of the PC version.

Fans of the PC title shouldn’t feel left out, however: another expansion for the desktop SKU – Supreme Commander: Experimentals – is already in the works.

Sup Comm 360 movie shows “control wheels”

supremecommander32.jpg

THQ’s put out an instructional movie for the Xbox 360 version of Supreme Commander, showing a completely new interface for the RTS.

The control method seems to be built entirely from “control wheels” which are used to assign units to squads, build stuff, issue commands, and so on. You bring up unit-specific wheels by selecting the unit and hitting right on the d-pad, then select options from the wheel with the right stick.

Looks very cool, to be honest, and made our eyebrows move up at least one notch. Nice to see the barrier between PC and console RTS being slowly but surely eroded.

After the link. The 360 version of GPG strategy monster’s out in September.

Supreme Commander 360 delayed to “early summer”

supremecommander2.jpg

We had no idea this even had a release date. According to this, the Xbox 360 version of Gas Powered Games’ RTS Supreme Commander has been pushed back to early summer.

“The benefit of having independent companies such as Aspyr and its partners working on a project of this magnitude is that decisions like this can be executed quickly,” added Aspyr marketing manager Eric Duncan. “While the game will be hitting shelves later than originally expected, the additional time put into development will result in better gameplay and more fun for gamers.”

No idea if Aspyr’s even handling the port over here: it’s not even listed on Gamespress. We’ll drop THQ a line.

GDC: Piracy forcing PC games onto console, says Supreme Commander man

supremecommander.jpg

According to this, Gas Powered Games boss Chris Taylor said that piracy is a lead factor in moving games like Supreme Commander onto consoles.

“Well one of the key things that is really affecting the economics and the success of gaming in general is piracy on the PC,” he said, talking at GDC. “So one of the reasons we’ll see RTSs on the console is because people can’t pirate it. That’s why we’re going to see a lot more of everything on the console. When you look at the sales of really hardcore games like Crysis and you think, ‘Wow, those games should have sold a lot more,’ you realize that’s probably due in large part to piracy. And you realize that a game like Crysis would have done its true numbers if it had launched on console first.”

Taylor’s intricate RTS, Supreme Commander, will make its way to Xbox 360 later this year.
