Interview part one – THQ Core boss Danny Bilson on Move/Kinect, creativity, MOH controversy, tons more

When you hear “THQ,” what springs to mind? Wrestling games? Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-Nickelodeon? Well then, you might want to crawl out from under that rock you’ve spent the last few years living underneath.
Where’s Tim Schafer these days? THQ. How about Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki? Same. And what’s this about Guillermo del Toro? The bottom line: THQ’s come a long, long way – but it’s far from done.
Leading the way has been THQ Core boss Danny Bilson, who was kind enough to take some time out from his busy schedule of interacting with some of the most interesting people in the industry to chat with little ol’ us. So we basically projectile vomited questions in his face, which he was surprisingly ok with.
Click past the break to hear Bilson’s thoughts on core Move/Kinect games, the need for creativity in the gaming industry, how we should handle touchy subjects like the recent Medal of Honor controversy, 3D, Tim Schafer, and plenty more!

THQ to cut $220 million in spending for the year

THQ said this week that its plans to cut $220 million in spending for the just-started financial year are now in action.
The shutting down five internal studios, laying off a quarter of THQ’s workforce, trying to sell off Big Huge Games, and making Heavy Iron and Incinerator Studios defunct are all known measures.
The firm is also counting on Darksiders, Red Faction, and UFC to help line the company wallet; while changing its overall focus from quantity to quality.
To cement this new motto, THQ has halved the number of games it would normally release fro this year, says this Gamespot report.
“We have executed on our previously announced business realignment actions,” said president and CEO Brian Farrell.
“Our goal is to return to profitability and generate positive cash flow in fiscal 2010, and to position THQ for long-term sustainable and profitable growth.”
It was revealed earlier in the week that THQ tentatively plans to release Red Faction 4, Saint’s Row 3, and Warhammer 40K MMO in 2010.

Volition: We struggled with PS3 Red Faction
Volition reckons it needed extra help to get the PS3 version of Red Faction: Guerilla up to muster with the 360 version.
“I mean, to be honest, we are pushing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 to the limits,” associate producer Sean Kennedy told OXM.
“I mean, not only has it been a balancing act making destruction work with the gameplay and making it all come together in a cohesive way that’s fun but it’s been a balancing act getting the game to run on the systems.
“One little change and you’re out of memory. When it comes to PlayStation3, there’s less memory to work with. We actually ended up hiring some from Sony to help us make our PS3 version. Fortunately, they are the same. We’ve been able to make sure that PC, 360 and PS3 versions are the same.”
So there we are. The game’s out early next year.

Red Faction: Guerilla is third-person and open-world, says THQ
According to this, THQ has formally announced Red Faction: Guerilla, the third in the Volition shooter franchise. The game is to be third-person, as was seen in the first screen yesterday, a departure from the FPS format of the previous two games.
The game’s environment is described as “open-world”, and is set 50 years after the first game. In a nutshell, you’re a freedom fighter up against the opressive Earth Defense Force (EDF) on Mars. Expect plenty of destruction and deformation.
“Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick,” said Volition president Mike Kulas. “With a new third-person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we’re excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms.”
Red Faction: Guerilla will ship for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 during THQ’s fiscal year 2009, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009.

First Red Faction: Guerilla shot emerges
And here it is. The top one’s real, the bottom one isn’t. Looks like a bloke holding an axe, to us, and it seems to suggest a third-person element. There’s lots of deformation going on there, which is in keeping with the first two games. No idea when we’re going to get a proper first look at this.

THQ financials: Red Faction III confirmed for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC
THQ chief Brian Farrell gave first details of a third in the Red Faction shooter series in an investor call last night, following the announcement of third quarter financials. The game was described as “Red Faction III” and is being developed, as you’d expect, by Volition. Farrell promised more on the game in the coming weeks, with few details emerging on the project other than it’s going to leverage current gen hardware for “more exciting destruction technology.”
The game is to release in THQ’s fiscal 2009, which ends on March 31 next year.
