Far Cry 2 map pack now on Steam

farcry2a2

Steam has the Fortunes Pack add-on for Far Cry 2 up for $4.99.

It’s only compatible with the Steam version and adds three new weapons, two new vehicles, and five new multiplayer maps.

That’s the same content PS3 and Xbox 360 users got last year, but with the addition of an extra map for PC gamers.

German played Far Cry 2 the night before shooting 15

farcry2a8

Tim Kretschmer, the German 17 year-old responsible for killing 15 people at his school last week, played Far Cry 2 the night before committing his crime, the Times reports.

Kretschmer played the FPS from 7.30pm to 9.40pm the previous evening. The Times report claims there are “remarkable parallels” between the game and Kretschmer actions the following day, in that he hijacked cars and wore a camouflaged uniform.

“Most sinister of all,” the Times went on, “Far Cry 2’s killer uses a Beretta 92 handgun, the weapon fired 112 times by Kretschmer. The game, which carries an 18 certificate in Britain, includes sequences in which the aiming, firing and reloading of a Beretta are portrayed in vivid detail. It also rewards players who shoot their victims in the head, the style of killing chosen by Kretschmer.”

Kretschmer also played Counter-Strike on the same night.

The report does add, as its final two paragraphs, that Walter Hollstein, a sociologist working with the Council of Europe, said: “It’s nonsense to assume they turn adolescents into school shooters.

“A variety of factors, such as helplessness, anger and loss of control, must come together for them to become the trigger, but the games themselves don’t make anyone a killer.”

Glad that’s cleared up.

Fake email claims Steam is giving Far Cry 2 away for free

farcry2a

Joystiq and a few others received a faux email earlier in the day saying Valve was giving them Far Cry 2 for free.

The email address appears to originate from Steam and the link looks legitimate, but it goes to a third-party site where heaven only knows what sort of nasty thing will download onto your system.

If you are one of the recipients of this email, don’t fall for it.

More over on Joystiq, and you can view the offending email flier here.

Hardcore mode on the way for Far Cry 2

farcry2a2

Far Cry 2 multiplayer is to get a Hardcore mode, as detailed in this official forum post. Here’s what you get:

The hardcore mode has been designed as an answer to a community request. When designing the multiplayer game our team wanted to provide a balanced experience for most gamers. However some players were seeking and expecting a more realistic experience.

The addition of a “hardcore” setting, available in every game mode, will have many consequences:
A new damage model will be applied with increased damage for all weapons.

All weapons have been rebalanced on normal mode, and on hardcore mode.

Enemy names will disappear after the spawning invincibility period is over (A shield is displayed above a player’s head for a few second to show that he is invincible).

A new option will allow you to tweak spawning time (but not spawning rate).

A new search option will be available in multiplayer to allow you to find games that are playing on hardcore mode.

The new mode will be implemented with “the next wave of patches”.

Ubisoft launches official Far Cry 2 map editing guide

farcry21b.jpg

In Spring this year, Ubisoft will release a Far Cry 2 map editing guide in conjunction with leading US publisher Charles River Media called, “Designing Wargames: The Official Far Cry 2 Map Editing Guide.”

“This is the next milestone in gamer-generated content,” says David Hutchison, associate Professor at Brock University. “Far Cry 2 makes it easy for both PC and console gamers to create cool new multiplayer maps that they can then share with other gamers. We want to honour this effort by inviting the Far Cry 2 map-making community to contribute to this first-of-its-kind game design book.”

Far Cry 2 dev Jessy-Gosselin Gant adds: “Level design is a defining factor in how the player will experience a video game.

“It constitutes a key role in production by having the responsibility of presenting all the different game components such as art, animation, AI and gameplay mechanics at their best, so the player can enjoy them in a convincing and attractive environment.”

Free Far Cry 2 missions released

farcry2a2.jpg

Intel’s sponsored two completely free Far Cry 2 missions for the PC version: download them here.

Some notes on the new content:

Mission 1: the Morrocan

This mission sends you into the most heavily guarded region of the Leboa-Sako territory. Hiding out at the old Legion fort is a Moroccan who might be able to help you locate the Jackal. Your objective is to locate him and find out what he knows.
Mission 2: the American

Your predecessor has tracked down the American informant to the Dogon village in the rocky northern ranges. Your objective: follow his trail and find out what the informant told him.

These are the first two of six free missions, after which, if you’ve played them all, you’ll be able to download a seventh. For nothing. That’s pretty cool.

Full detail through the link.

Far Cry 2 wins on PC, says Eurogamer

farcry24.jpg

Eurogamer’s claimed the PC version of Far Cry is the best of the three SKUs in another of Richard Leadbetter face-off features.

“Far Cry 2 is an excellent release on PC, and the fact that it can run in high definition with all features set to high levels while still providing a reasonably smooth, graphically superb experience is a first-rate achievement,” said Leadbetter.

“Both console versions are intelligently ported and decent games to play, but with clear compromises.”

Not only that, but Ubi Montreal’s work is on a par with CryEngine 2, apparently, and even tops it in the fact that it’s already working on consoles.

“We’d still give the nod to CryEngine 2 in terms of overall performance, but [Far Cry 2 engine] Dunia is working in the here and now on both PC and console, while Crytek’s 360 and PS3 work remains under wraps in Frankfurt,” he added.

More through there.

Far Cry 2 PS3 mod is ridiculous

farcry220.jpg

We’re not especially big on this sort of thing, but this does look bonkers. Bit-Tech‘s modded a PS3 with Far Cry 2 paraphernalia, showing every step of the way in photos.

The site’s giving it away to a UK resident, if you fancy a punt.

Thanks, PS3F.

The Far Cry 2 review embargo was lifted last night and Ubisoft’s follow-up to Crytec’s classic has done very well indeed.

Eurogamer gave the game 8/10, IGN awarded it 88/100, whilst GameSpot gave it 85.

If that’s not enough, you can find all them all over at MetaCritic.

Far Cry 2 gets Home space

According to PSBlog, the Far Cry 2 PlayStation Home space has launched on the closed beta.

“The space will invite players to dig deeper into the game’s vast African landscape,” says the piece. “Users will have the opportunity to investigate in-game environments, including a bombed-out train station that has been converted into the ad hoc office of Reuben Oluwagembi, a journalist caught in the middle of the propaganda conflict between the warring UFLL and APR factions.”

Looks pretty good, if we’re honest. All we need now is that release date.

More through the link.
