Ubisoft launches official Far Cry 2 map editing guide
In Spring this year, Ubisoft will release a Far Cry 2 map editing guide in conjunction with leading US publisher Charles River Media called, “Designing Wargames: The Official Far Cry 2 Map Editing Guide.”
“This is the next milestone in gamer-generated content,” says David Hutchison, associate Professor at Brock University. “Far Cry 2 makes it easy for both PC and console gamers to create cool new multiplayer maps that they can then share with other gamers. We want to honour this effort by inviting the Far Cry 2 map-making community to contribute to this first-of-its-kind game design book.”
Far Cry 2 dev Jessy-Gosselin Gant adds: “Level design is a defining factor in how the player will experience a video game.
“It constitutes a key role in production by having the responsibility of presenting all the different game components such as art, animation, AI and gameplay mechanics at their best, so the player can enjoy them in a convincing and attractive environment.”

Free Far Cry 2 missions released
Intel’s sponsored two completely free Far Cry 2 missions for the PC version: download them here.
Some notes on the new content:
Mission 1: the Morrocan
This mission sends you into the most heavily guarded region of the Leboa-Sako territory. Hiding out at the old Legion fort is a Moroccan who might be able to help you locate the Jackal. Your objective is to locate him and find out what he knows.
Mission 2: the AmericanYour predecessor has tracked down the American informant to the Dogon village in the rocky northern ranges. Your objective: follow his trail and find out what the informant told him.
These are the first two of six free missions, after which, if you’ve played them all, you’ll be able to download a seventh. For nothing. That’s pretty cool.

Far Cry 2 wins on PC, says Eurogamer
Eurogamer’s claimed the PC version of Far Cry is the best of the three SKUs in another of Richard Leadbetter face-off features.
“Far Cry 2 is an excellent release on PC, and the fact that it can run in high definition with all features set to high levels while still providing a reasonably smooth, graphically superb experience is a first-rate achievement,” said Leadbetter.
“Both console versions are intelligently ported and decent games to play, but with clear compromises.”
Not only that, but Ubi Montreal’s work is on a par with CryEngine 2, apparently, and even tops it in the fact that it’s already working on consoles.
“We’d still give the nod to CryEngine 2 in terms of overall performance, but [Far Cry 2 engine] Dunia is working in the here and now on both PC and console, while Crytek’s 360 and PS3 work remains under wraps in Frankfurt,” he added.
More through there.

Far Cry 2 gets Home space
According to PSBlog, the Far Cry 2 PlayStation Home space has launched on the closed beta.
“The space will invite players to dig deeper into the game’s vast African landscape,” says the piece. “Users will have the opportunity to investigate in-game environments, including a bombed-out train station that has been converted into the ad hoc office of Reuben Oluwagembi, a journalist caught in the middle of the propaganda conflict between the warring UFLL and APR factions.”
Looks pretty good, if we’re honest. All we need now is that release date.

Far Cry 2 level editor will give birth to “hundreds of thousands” of maps, says Ubi – video
Far Cry 2 multiplayer producer Richard Gaetan has told VG247 that he expects the game’s level editor to allow users to create “hundreds of thousands of maps” after it launches later this month.
“It was always big,” said the developer when asked how important the multiplayer aspects of the game wer to overall development.
“For us, we have three games in one. We have single-player, which is huge. Then we have the multiplayer and the map editor, that will have thousands and hundreds of thousands of maps there, so that’s like another huge part of the game.”
Gaetan went on to explain that simplicity and accessibility were key when constructing the level editor.
“Our strategy with the multiplayer was that we wanted to bring cool, good, solid mechanics but are simple at the same time, so the user will easily make good maps for all game modes. That was our focus point,” he said.
“You know with the single-player being really big and deep, we could have gone with something really complex on the multiplayer side, but then no-one would have been able to do maps for it, so we said, ‘OK, make sure everything is solid, and then the user and community will take care of creating thousands of maps.’”
The game’s out for PC, 360 and PS3 on October 24. There’s a video of the editor in action after the link.

Far Cry 2 to use SecuROM, five installs on three PCs
Far Cry 2 is the latest PC game to use SecuROM protection, according to this Blues post, and will apparently allow five installs on three computers.
According to that story, based on this forum post from a Ubi rep, “Uninstalling the game ‘refunds’ an activation. This process is called ‘revoke’, so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on three systems.”
There’s more through there. The game’s out on October 24.

Far Cry 2 user-created levels possible on Xbox Live thanks to Instinct “experience”
While Epic ran into some sticky issues about allowing user-created content on Xbox Live with Unreal Tournament 3 mods, Far Cry 2 developer Ubisoft Montreal has managed to get past the problem thanks to going through the process before with Far Cry Instinct on Xbox.
Far Cry 2′s user-created content comes in the form of multiplayer maps, obviously.
“[Microsoft has] some restriction: they have some technical issues,” multiplayer producer Richard Gaetan told us when asked if user-content on Xbox Live presented a problem for the game.
“As we have the experience from Far Cry Instinct in Montreal, we encountered some issues and that’s why it was only peer-to-peer.
“And so with that experience in our background, it was a bit easier. Then we started to discuss with [Sony], and make sure it was the same for PlayStation, to make sure it was alright with them. We made sure we sent them early builds.”
As reported yesterday, maps will be either stored locally on gamers’ machines or on Ubisoft’s servers, and can be shared from either location.
Shipping on October 24, the game comes with a full map editor on PC, 360 and PS3 versions.
