DUST 514 and EVE Online share more than a fictional universe; the PlayStation 3 exclusive shooter and PC MMO occupy the same massive server, and as such, are capable of some amazing interactions. Although CCP is just ramping this aspect up, the most spectacular of these is orbital bombardment provided by EVE Online players in cahoots with DUST 514 mercenaries, a recently added feature. See it in action, and hear DUST 514 players discussing the astonishing results, in the video through the break.

For those who become a bit confused whenever the economy is mentioned in EVE Online, and are wondering how it will be implemented in DUST 514 should head over to the PS Blog. According to the CCP developer entry on the PS3 shooter, which explains how it all works: “interplanetary violence is its own reward, but we’re always striving to reward your destructive tendencies in other ways. ISK, SP, and Salvage are just three of the ways your time pays off. Every victory, every kill, every clone, brings you one step closer toward being the scourge of the stars.” Sounds harrowing. Go have a read. DUST 514 will remain in closed beta until sometime next year.

EVE Online’s upcoming Retribution update includes a couple of tweaks to existing game systems, all of them to do with murder. Bounties are to be made cheaper and more transparent – no more anonymous hit requests – while kill rights will be accessible from character sheets and easier to understand. Wars get a look in, too; if you initiate a war and it becomes mutual, you can back out like a coward, and multiple wars will now be cheaper thanks to the axing of multipliers. There’s a lot more detail in this developer blog. Retribution lands on December 4.

MMOs are always better with friends, so CCP has kindly made its EVE Online Buddy System a little more flexible. The previous scheme rewarded both parties whenever a referred player upgraded from the free to full game, and the new one continues this tradition, but allows referrers to invite lots of friends at once, and for their unique referral URL to be used multiple times by different parties. More information is available in a developer blog.
