Nier Automata is getting DLC after all, so you can beat up Square Enix's CEO and dress 2B as Kaine

Nier Automata sold well enough that Square Enix has green lit a tiny bit more of it. Glory to Mankind!

Nier Automata is getting a little bit of DLC, which to be frank sounds pretty fluffy but good fun regardless.

The premium DLC is called 3C3C1D119440927 - have fun searching that up on the PlayStation Store - and was announced during a livestream to celebrate Nier Automata shipping 1 million copies worldwide. It arrives in Japan May 2 and has been confirmed for Europe and North America, if not dated. It'll go for ¥1,500 in Japan, but again we don't have western details yet.

The DLC's most substantial content is the addition of new sidequests and three colosseums to Nier Automata. These arenas feature boss battles as well as other kinds of scenarios, and challenges can be unlocked my meeting mysterious requirements. The available battles include an encounter with Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda and another against Platinum Games CEO Kenichi Sato. Both are level 85 bosses with pretty amazing bullet-hell style sequences.

Some of the colosseum battles are supposed to be really tough, although I can't imagine they pose many problems for those who mastered Nier Automata's optional boss. The various challenges unlock cosmetic rewards:

  • Revealing Outfit for 2B (Kaine)
  • Young Man's Outfit for 9S (Nier Replicant)
  • Destroyer Outfit for A2 (Nier Gestalt/Nier)
  • Jukebox music packs
  • Hair colours for A2 and 2B
  • New masks with special effects
  • Projectile colours

Here's some footage of the CEO battle, which is not even close to the strangest thing in Nier Automata:

It's not the story expansion you may have been hoping for, but as creator Yoko Taro said in the past, the Nier Automata team doesn't have the budget for story DLC. Since Nier Automata's story is already perfect as it is, that's fine by me.

Expect further details on Nier Automata's DLC - if not more DLC, alas - in the coming months.
