Battleborn was released last week and it's already "tracking just ahead" of where Borderlands 1 was at launch.

Battleborn sales already "tracking just ahead" of Borderlands at launch

That's according to Gearbox Software creative director Randy Varnell, who said the studio is "cautiously optimistic" regarding the online shooter's sales after such as "steady" start.

“The launch has been pretty good," he said during a Twitch stream with Kalology. “We do a lot of comparisons back to the first Borderlands back in 2009. That launch felt similar to us.

"Ultimately Borderlands was extremely successful new game for us which went on to sell almost 8 million units in its lifetime. Battleborn is actually tracking just ahead of where Borderlands was on the sales."

Varnell said Gearbox feels Battleborn will follow the same path as Borderlands. It will start off with a solid launch, find steady growth over all three platforms and word of mouth will continue to push things along.

“We’re seeing growth every day at a steady rate after a big burst of people at launch," he said. "Hopefully we’ll continue to see that go up.”

Battleborn was released last week on May 3 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
