Devs prefer PS4 over Xbox One, but PC is still king, survey says

Wednesday, 9th July 2014 17:56 GMT By Sherif Saed

A survey conducted by GDC Europe event organisers polled some 400, Europe-based game developers about their platform preference.

The survey found that 33% of developers are expecting to build PS4 games while 23% are looking to develop on Xbox One. 58% of surveyed developers said that they’re working on PC titles, and 60% said that they’re releasing their next project on PC.

It’s not all rosy in the land of high-end gaming however, as 65% of those developers are currently working on mobile titles.

    They just prefer it for obvious reasons. No black or white with nothing in between.

    Because console titles are always released in a completely finished, non-buggy, fully polished, content complete state? Oh, please, don’t make me laugh. Early Access didn’t change anything, it just resulted in a greater degree of honesty and transparency. I bet there are lots of developers who’re desperate for something like Early Access on the consoles.

    And, yes, some console games really are released in a polished, bug free, and content-complete way. But so are some PC games.

    Difference being — Steam doesn’t lie about it and try to brush it under the rug.

    This preference is more to do with profit for nearly half of these developers. If the trend was there was more core gamers played exclusively on the 3DS and those numbers were larger than the PC and consoles combined than most of those developers would be making Nintendo handheld games. Most of the hardest of the hard core PC only devs like Valve and Blizzard are starting to bring their titles to console (ie: Diablo, Portal, Half-Life) like Activision and EA did with their PC developers did with Battlefield and COD. PC is the largest market because it has been around the longest and now a days it is easier to have someone make you a rig or buy one that is decent enough. Consoles get by because of exclusives and the convenience of having a platform consisting of millions with only one piece of hardware to optimize it for. Not all RAM and Video cards and processors on PC so it can be a bit of a hassle and lets not forget there are genres that are more akin to PC like MOBA and MMO. PS4 will have 6 or 7 running by 2015 but there are dozens of MMOs on PC for example there are more free to play shooters as well. It really isn’t a black and white comparison to be honest.

    Seeing as PC = Windows and Windows is MS, and MS owns XB1.. seems odd they could bridge that logical gap.

    Windows PC offers a much bigger cut for the game developer/distributor. There’s your reason right there.

    @Arcnail
    Why would they? Console gamers expect to be milked dry from they hard earned cash by their respective creators. MS gets nothing for a PC game sale while they get big money for an Xbox game.
