Titanfall was prototyped on Ratchet & Clank engine, Vita version suggested by Sony

Titanfall was first built using Insomniac’s Luma Engine thanks to a friendly deal between Ted Price and Vince Zampella.

According to Geoff Keighley’s The Final Hours of Titanfall, Respawn Entertainment considered using several engines before settling on Valve’s Source.

The first prototypes of Titanfall were built using Luma, the engine which powers Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time. Insomniac CEO Price freely lent the tech to Zampella, a friend, since they were both in a similar situation, working on EA-published games.

Respawn spent one year working with this engine before deciding which tech to use to build the final version. It considered Pandemic’s Zero engine, which EA offered, as well as Unreal Engine, which the developer felt couldn’t run at 60 FPS.

There’s plenty more of interest in the full feature, including Respawn’s early talks with Sony and how it offered to develop a Vita version  of Titanfall, the estrangement between Zampella and fellow co-founder Jason West, and more.

Thanks, DualShockers.

It might have looked and controlled better had it stayed there, in my opinion. The Ratchet & Clank engine is pretty rad.

“as well as Unreal Engine, which the developer felt couldn’t run at 60 FPS.’

Just like their current engine then? In all seriousness, picking Source engine was probably their biggest mistake when developing.

Sony put on their troll hats and trolled the hell out of Respawn & EA.

Respawn: We want to develop for your next gen platform PS4.
SCE: No you cannot but we just remembered that we have this thing called Vita and we try to make it relevant by forgetting it, dishing out random old ports and relegating it as an accessory.
Respawn: That’s not what we asked, now about PS4.
SCE: We will offer to help develop a PS Vita version?
EA: Nobody cares Sony, give it up.
Respawn: So about that PS4 version?
SCE: No we won’t co-operate on something that doesn’t publicly exist.
    Respawn & EA: *Walks away.
Respawn & EA: We are developing an online only multiplayer FPS and want to develop for Xbox 720.
MS: Its actually called Xbox One.
    EA: Da Fuck?
Respawn: We want to go foward, not backwards.
MS: That’s what we are calling our next gen platform.
    Respawn & EA:?
MS: Yeah we will fund unless its a timed exclusive.
    Respawn & EA: Sure.
Fast foward to “Life time exclusive announcement”
MS: Yeah Xbox One isn’t doing too well so heres a money truck for a full on exclusive to Xbox One, PC and Xbox360.
    EA: SURE!
Fast foward to Xbox One Titanfall launch:
MS: Another money truck to delay the 360 version.
    EA: SURE!

Yeah I copied most of these before you ask.
