PS4 and Xbox One will both “sell a ton” because “consumers have choice,” says Microsoft

Friday, 17th January 2014 15:49 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

In response to a Reddit thread on last night’s NPD results, Xbox’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb has said the “hate that infects gaming” needs to stop.

Last night, Microsoft reported during December in North America that Xbox One was the number one selling console in the market, moving 908,000 units. Additionally, Xbox 360 moved 643,000 units in December, putting it in the number three spot overall, and lead for last generation hardware.

Together, Xbox One and Xbox 360 held 46% of the hardware market share in the US and showed a 10% year-over-year growth from December 2012.

“Both new platforms are off to a great start,” said Hryb. “We all should be celebrating a healthy vibrant industry. Sony has done a good job, and they should be commended. The hate that infects gaming in the online space needs to go away.”

Hryb went on to say Sony would “sell a ton” along with Xbox One because the “industry is doing well and consumers have choice.”

Sony responded to the figures lats night but stating PlayStation 4 remained “the cumulative leader for next-gen console sales” since its the launch in the US on November 15.

“We sold every PS4 available at retail in the US and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand,” said SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications Dan Race.

Thanks, ffronw.

Shame I don’t have a choice to buy an Xbox One without the Kinect. Until that happens i’m not buying Xbox One. I refuse to pay for something I will never use.

A ton…. in XB1′s is what? five units at best, those things weigh loads, saying that my PS4 isn’t that much lighter, so… eight units of Sony’s box and Five of MS’s…

    Good times.

So far, MS have done a good job showing that the Xbone is a poorly concieved, clumsy and overpriced device.

Any ‘hate’ it or MS recieves is usually well placed critisism based on a group of people who feel angry that a product they had previously enjoyied and invested time / money with has taken on an entirely different form.

Well i will get both eventually, i do like each respective exclusives.

But i believe both, in most cases are offering the same thing, which will be difficult for a lot of gamers to own both, unless they like to own all the exclusives for each system, like i do.

Also they need to release a bundle without kinect, in order to have the same price comparision with the PS4.

I agree with @1. If they ever do release it without Kinect and drop the price, I’d gladly buy one.

If you don’t want hate then don’t attempt to design software and hardware that restricts your consumers like untrustworthy shithead.

Microsoft is getting the contempt it’s getting through its own actions. If they can’t see that, that’s their problem. And Larry has no place to talk considering he tried to shovel the PR bullshit down people’s throats, about how the systems were necessary, before turning around and doing a complete 180 and actually acting like Microsoft actually gave a shit.

The whole Xbox One fiasco was probably the craziest PR nightmare I’ve ever seen in gaming history, and the hardware will likely suffer for it. Don’t blame other people for your own mistakes.

You’ve all literally just missed the point of what Nelson said.

Also, both systems offer next-gen gaming, albeit with a differing focus: while Xbox aims for mainstream consumers, PS4 actively targets the hardcore.

I’d call that a choice, and a good one.

I’m too busy gaming on my PC to notice all that hate he’s talking about. All I know is that Major Nelson is a pompous asshole.

Of course they will. Why? Because Console gaming is NOT dying. PC gaming is also NOT dying. Hell, even handheld business is ok thanks to 3DS.

Failures of Wii U and Vita are NOT a sign of gaming market going away as some doomsayers want to believe.

I have both plus a wiiu. . They both will sell .. A Nintendo won’t sell because of the brand .. it’s sad because I want the wiiu to do well but it’s done.. become a 1st party for one of the big 2 Nintendo. . Save yourself the time and money plus headache of the hardware business

Yeah, no one seems to be getting the point. In a statement about Sony’s financials, Major Nelson says, “Stop the hate.” He’s talking to the MS fanbase towards Sony.

People online and reading comprehension are like night and day, it seems.

#13 well the Vita is doing just fine in Japan.I see the same scenario as the Psp unfortunately Japan will get good support while the rest of the world gets nothing. If Sony had the numbers of console’s they said they would have you would be looking at a 2-2.5 million Xbox ones vs 4.8-5 million Ps4′s sold.

I won’t be buying an XBone either, but I do have to commend MS for admitting that they do have competition, and that consumers can only win because of it. Kudos MS.

He’s talking to fanboys of all colours, not just the Sony ones. And he’s right.

“people who feel angry that a product they had previously enjoyied and invested time / money with has taken on an entirely different form.”

It’s not the same product. It’s a brand. Big difference. Big distinction.

How people can be angry that a new product isn’t right for them is beyond me. I don’t like Larry Hyrb, but he’s right. People have choice and the hate can fuck right off.

The only right choice is going for both, in addition to a gaming PC. Won’t get a complete gaming experience otherwise (Sony/MS for exclusives+PC for MMO’s especially). Providing you got the money ofcourse.

@21 I would love to have both, and I could afford it cash-wise, but I don’t have TIME for both. Too many good games available if you have both, for me it would only lead to more agonizing decisions.

“Choice” is an accurate word when considering which gaming console to by. Many chose the PS4 by a bigger margin than the Xbox One, but by judging some of the responses here, you’d think the Xbox One sold only two consoles since it’s launch. They sold a million in spite of the whole DRM fiasco. They sold another million sticking with the mandatory Kinect vision, and sold one more million with a $100 higher price tag than it’s competitor. Did they sell as many as the PS4? Nope, but they sold millions regardless. Somebody has to win, somebody has to lose. If losing means only selling 3 plus million in a month and a half in selected territories, I think it’s safe to say that both consoles launched with much success.

@23, agreed totally. For me though, the choice is simple, staying with the 360. some of us have jobs and lives so getting through games takes a while and i like to actually finish a game and try to get as many achievements as i can so with my backlog of games, the deals over xmas they had, all the 2 free games a month and still a few yet to purchase, im easily covered for the next 2yrs.
By then i can make a decent decision on which console, get a decent bundle probably cheaper than both consoles and get a bunch of games cheap.
Thats if i decide to go console next gen, really tempted by pc since they offer more especially with how crazy the sales can be on steam, the entire GTA collection apart from 5, was 4.99, Borderlands 2 gotye was 6.99.ah well plenty of time to decide what next.
