PS4 is “world’s biggest console launch” – analyst

Thursday, 12th December 2013 03:04 GMT By Brenna Hillier

PlayStation 4 has the had the most successful launch of any console to date, according to analyst firm DFC Intelligence, and is going to win this generation’s console war.

By selling 2.1 million units since launch the PS4 has become the “world’s biggest console launch”, DFC Intelligence said in a report celebrated by Sony, as reported by Shack News.

DFC Intelligence expects PS4 to beat out Xbox One this generation overall, although it won’t join the ranks of the best-selling consoles of all time.

“The initial success of the PlayStation 4 bodes well for its future. The PlayStation 2 and Wii went on to be the best selling console systems ever. DFC Intelligence does not believe that the PlayStation 4 will surpass those systems but reiterates its forecast that the PS4 will be the number one system of this generation,” the firm said, although it believes the PS4 may outsell the PS3, something Sony is bang behind.

The Xbox One managed 2 million sales in the same period, but DFC thinks its appeal “is limited more to a core demographic”. The firm expects Titanfall to boost sales, though.

DFC also reiterated earlier messaging that it expects the Wii U to match maybe half of the Wii’s lifetime sales. Ouch.

Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick expects the PS4 and Xbox One to overtake the PS3 and Xbox 360.

So.. if we’re taking these numbers at face value, Sony has only sold 100K more, with a weeks head start?

Not a fanboy of either until one of them gets a decent game, but again, looking at these numbers, Xbox One did better sales per day at the least.

Xbox is möte for a core demographic? If anything it is the other way around, with ps4 being “for the players” and Xbox one focused on the whole family with it’s tv thing, Kinect and the fitness stuff.

@5 Sorry but i cannot understand that thinking. I have seen far too many copies of Knack and Killzone get traded back in as oppossed to Ryse, Deadrising 3 and Forza 5. And two out of three of those games are 18 rated so clearly not intended for the family.

The PS4 is a very powerful machine but the belief that Xbox One is some sort of casual, family focused machine is simply not true. At its core the One is a games console that can do the other things as well as.

Personelly i would like to see Sony start showing their actual games in their marketing campaigns because all i see are actors and a lot of CG. If Sony are for the “Players” then show actual gameplay footage in the ads.

@6 what planet are you on? Xbox is clearly aimed at tv tv tv tv sports sports sports Skype Kinect Windows 8 people. You might see a lot of knack and killzone trade ins because those games were bundled with most ps4s. People may have got those bundles just to ensure they got a ps4 but not wanted the game. Xbox sold 2 million in 18 days, ps4 sold 2.1 million in 14 days due only to the fact Sony can’t meet the demand for the console. If supply was no issue I would imagine the ps4 would have sold 3 million. You can easy find an Xbox in the shops, but ps4 is like gold dust.

@7 True many were traded in for this issue but to wriet off the one on the games side of things is silly mate. All ads i have seen have been geared towards games games games tv tv sport sport kinect windows 8 people. I wont say that the casual/ TV/Entertainment aspect of the one isnt there. It is. Its part and parcel of the console but this instant dismissal that the one is NOT a games console is daft.

Not sure where abouts your located but i know for sure that BOTH consoles are not available for free sale at GAME untill after christmas. Also theres only 100k units between both consoles which is tiny in the grand scheme of things.

When all is said and done we will put in a shiny disc into a machine that looks slightly different and performs in different ways but we get the same outcome. Awesome games that will entertain.

And before im written off as an “Xbot” a PS4 is in my future, when funds will allow.

why people conculate that PS4 sell 2,1M in 14 days? day 1:USA sell all console everywhere,so its 1 day. day 2-3:europe in two days all console was sold out too.
so Sony sell 2,1M in 3 days.they don’t have any more what to sell.xbox in other hand was not so good and you can find any day this console allmost everywhere, even in launch day.
and finally,PS4 had just usa start 7 days earlier then xbox, but we can count that PS4 was sold out day 1,so seller scratch they ass 6 days :D and finally finally, xbox had 7 days earlier start in all world :)

I dont think you all realize the PS4 sold 2.1 million with a million sold in 24 hours in the US. where as the Sockbox One sold 2 million worldwide…. thats sad that sony outsold them in a country versus worldwide….
