Xbox One: “Microsoft loses the next generation unless they cut price,” warns Pachter

Friday, 6th December 2013 12:53 GMT By Dave Cook

PS4 vs Xbox One is a hot ticket right now, and it’s got Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter analysing his way into our headlines once more. Now, he feels the £80 discrepancy between both formats is a significant game-changer that could cost Microsoft the generation.

It follows Pachter’s disbelief at why Nintendo President Satoru Iwata still had a job.

Speaking with, Pachter said, “The reason Sony beats Microsoft is solely the price. Microsoft loses the next generation unless they cut price. If Microsoft drops its price to $399, I expect the sales to be equal to the PS4.”

That’s a short-term fix however, but what about the long-term? Pachter commented on sales projections that state both PS4 and Xbox One will out-sell their predecessors, “I don’t know where they get those numbers. I don’t think you’re ever going to see 500 million consoles out there. The next generation of consoles is probably the last. We expect frequent model updates instead of new consoles. I think the PC is going to make a comeback, the PC will be the hub of all this stuff.”

What do you make of all this? Puff talk, bugger-chat or cock-speak? Decide below.

I think having a console that actually works better than the previous generation would probably help a bit more.

That and some proper next gen games.

“I think the PC is going to make a comeback, the PC will be the hub of all this stuff.”

Wait?! Mom… IS DIS REAL LYFE?!

I remember a few months ago he was downplaying the PC platform and even outright insulting the PC gaming community.
Now he does the opposite lol.

Why do game news websites actually report on what this man has to say? Everyone can do it.

Michael Pachter. Well known for often being right.

Oh no wait, the other thing… wrong.

“cock-speak” as now my new favourite word.

Also, Dave should be banned for using the word “Puff”. :)

How about Nostradamuses in comments give their own analysis? Or is it easier to shoot others without putting your neck on the line?

So the main reason it’s so far ahead is the price.. Right.

How much is this man paid because I could’ve told you that.

    #9 1 year ago
  10. Dave Cook

@9 I don’t think he was paid specifically to tell us that.

That’s the problem with Pachter critics, they think he’s paid to just inform gamers on very specific things, when really he produces financial reports for the industry side. They’e dull, largely irrelevant to the consumer and scarcely reported on in full.

It needs to get rid of the Kinect. The price will easily go down $100

  12. Djoenz

The Xbox One is nothing without the Kinect, its mandatory. It can not operate without it. Even if they find a way to do it wouldnt that be a massive slap in the face for the people that were forced to get it included even if they didnt really want it?

  13. Tormenter

The sheer number of statements this guy makes ensures that at least some will be correct.. it’s the numbers.

Throw enough shit and some will stick. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

  14. xxxGamesMasterxxx

What do you mean? You still would have a controller to operate the system
wouldn’t you. Kinect isn’t mandatory I don’t think. Besides I wouldn’t want to spend my evening screaming at the Kinect over and over to do a command. I would rather do a few button clicks on the controller instead.

Well, next time loosen your grip, looks like your hurting him a bit! ;)

@12 – They axed the mandatory Kinect shortly after the DRM. The only thing mandatory about it is that you have to buy it.

“If Microsoft drops its price to $399, I expect the sales to be equal to the PS4.”

Unless that prompts Sony into reducing PS4 to $349/$299 that is!

You know what I love about Pachter? At E3, he was predicting the XB1 would dominate the holidays. Now, when sales prove him wrong, suddenly he’s all telling Microsoft what they need to do to come back.

Honestly, I wish people would pay me to guess about videogames and pretend I was wrong.

  23. Clupula

Also, I love his “the next generation of consoles is the last” bullshit.

    We’ve never heard THAT before…

  24. Djoenz

Dont forget people Analysts predict certain aspects in a ever changing and adapting financial eco system. Its unpredictable but it can fluctuate or change rapidly depending on several factors.

To take his previous statements and compare them with these ones is a ignorant thing to do. I mean that was before the reveal not to mention the DRM reversal aka 180 of the policies.

  25. Arcnail

This is stupid. I don’t have either right now, because they don’t have any games I want to play.

If one starts coming out with great exclusives, thats where players will go.

If they both basically have the same line ups, then sure, PS4 will probably win because it’s the cheaper, but again, it’s the GAMES on the platforms that will really make the call.

  26. reask

Yeah tbh both look like upgrades atm and until next gen games begin appearing I personally have no interest.
Having said that I reckon games will get better on both but here in my hometown there is no buzz for either which makes me wonder how they are like gold dust.

  27. Doppleganger

If they know whats good for them they will spend that extra 100 dollars as the system its better.
People that I know that own both all like their XboxOne more and think Ryse has better graphics then Killzone….for now anyway as the PS4 has no games.

I never want to hear this Pachter as he’s a complete moron, I still remember him from the last gen consoles analysis

    @3 well put.

    #28 1 year ago

    @25, 26:

Indeed, both consoles are a huge disappointment right now.
We’re actually in the ridiculous situation where we can stick with the previous generation, and have more online and hardware features, and the exact same gameplay, with not significantly worse visuals.

The X1′s party chat system is worse than the 360s, for example. It even has an Optical port that doesn’t actually work, yet!

    They’re selling an unfinished product.

The PS4 isn’t much better, either, and has a ‘to be patched’ list all of its own.

Right now, the only real difference between the top selling game on both consoles, and the previous gen verions, is the ability to play 9v9, online, instead of 6v6.

Everything else is exactly the same, except that the current gen versions seem to be having a more consistent online experience, so far.

As it stands, there’s no reason to buy, other than to fill your consumerist needs…

    “Pachter this…” “Pachter that…”

Agree with all of them. But he’s not wrong on this one, is he. I’d buy an XBox One tomorrow if it was £329 (the Kinect will just have to go in a drawer because they’ll never accept many gamers have no interest in it whatsoever). I’m more than happy to play DR3 today and TF soon, but not at £429.

Amazon UK update. Bestselling video games/consoles (updated hourly):

    #06. PS4 console – sold out
    #34. PS4 KZ3 bundle – sold out
    #42. PS4 “gamer pack” – sold out
    #49. PS4 Knack bundle – sold out
#55. XBox One console – in stock and ready for dispatch

Those are frightening data for MS.

@30: That’s exactly what “In stock on January 7, 2014″ means….ready for dispatch at this moment!

    @7: Unexpected homoeroticism…we approve!

“Pachter picks Microsoft to win next console generation”. That’s a title for an article from this very website earlier this year. That’s why I don’t believe anything Pachter says anymore.

  33. sebastien rivas

Of course, I do not take his words like a bible, yet, he makes sense in some ways but yet, I differ and disagree with his conclusion.

Breaking Xbox1 price will not help further sells or just too few and will mark a word to all gamers around the world that MS was wrong in first place with its hardware blueprint and should have instead used a next step APU to ease developers in their creativity and provide longevity to the system; therefore if MS does this move then it is a bad omen for the system if not just angering xbox1 adopter for seeing their own wallet throw in flame so early in this 5~6 years implication.
