Blizzard COO excited by Steam Machines, says only Valve could pull them off

Tuesday, 12th November 2013 08:50 GMT By Dave Cook

Valve’s mission to overhaul PC gaming in the living room could only have been done by the Steam creators, Blizzard COO Paul Sams reckons. He’s also very excited by the prospect.

Sams discussed Valve’s efforts at BlizzCon, during which World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor was announced. It’s the MMO’s fifth expansion, but a sixth is already in the works. Get the details through the link.

Speaking with GameSpot Sams said of the Steam Machines, “I’m excited to see what they do, to be honest. Obviously with Steam, they’ve done great things; they’re a talented group. And I would say that if anybody’s going to be able to do it, it would be them.”

Hes stressed his praise for Valve further, adding, “I think Valve is a really great company. I thinkGabe Newell and his team have consistently and regularly done great stuff, and I think if anybody could do it, they can.”

Valve has been discussing its Linux and SteamOS-based Steam Machines a lot recently. It was confirmed that Valve won’t make SteamOS-exclusive titles, and that it will not allow the creation of third-party SteamOS controllers.

I am trying very hard to hold out until this time next year.

By that time the PS4 and Xbone will have played their hands and we will have a much better idea how they are going to pan out and The SteamOS stuff will be launched.

Then I can make an informed choice.

I am leaning more and more towards Steam for the openness and variety

But in reality the first time I play anything truly next gen I will let the store assistant rape my credit card and regret it later.

Here’s hoping those demo pods don’t come to my town for a while.

Try to wait at least until the 2014 CES in January. It’s only a couple of months away. Steam Machine details will be revealed at that show.
