Friday, 8th November 2013 13:15 GMT By Dave Cook

Japanese gaming mag Famitsu has published a list of the nation’s top-100 best-selling games from the 21st Century.

NeoGAF published the list in full and added that it does not count re-releases or digital downloads bought directly from the Nintendo eShop, PSN or Xbox Live. It does, however, count games bundled with hardware and those coming on download cards sold in stores.

The top-selling games between January 1, 2001 to September 29th, 2013 are as follows:

no 360 game and just 1 PS3 game.

    what does that say?

exactly, the japanese market is irrelevant for us and Sony and Microsoft…

well, the PSP has about 4 games on there, so yeah, still irrelevant ^^

Not surprisingly, DS has the most games. With over 30 million in sales in Japan alone. The best selling handheld ever. And probably forever.

Im not saying they are cheap to make, but the Nintendo games that have been selling a shit load, look to have fairly cheap dev cycles.

They also sell on consoles where Nintendo are usually making a lot of money off the hardware.

Thats a good sales combo right there.

@8 Sure, but at least there is other titles than can sell more than 3 millions easily
while in japan things are different, for example FF XIII was the ONLY PS3 title to sell more than a million.

Weird list. I’ve never understood the pokemon obsession, my kids don’t even like that shit.

FFXII 2k short of FFX? Sad face.

Though delighted Rhythm Tengoku did so well. Absolute madness, but great fun.

@10 Considering the “west” as a collective whole has a significantly higher population than Japan, the sales numbers are obviously going to be a lot higher. What’s important is the *percentage* of the population.

Is there any western-developed title in there other than DKCR, which was developed by Retro? I skimmed through the list so there might be some that I missed but man, the Japanese are indeed a totally different people compared to the rest of the world.

Anyway, the one thing I love about this list is that both DQVIII and IX are higher than any FF titles.
Say what you want about Japan, they know their own RPGs very well.
