Rift goes free-to-play on Steam, three new bundles announced

Rift developer Trion Worlds has made its MMO free to all on Steam. The studio has also announced three new game bundles filled with digital bonuses.

In a press release issued to VG247 today, Trion Worlds confirmed that gamers will be able to access the full game and its 16 major updates absolutely free of charge.

Scott Hartsman, CEO of Trion Worlds said in a statement, “Steam has been an amazing partner for Trion. When we first launched Rift, Steam’s dedicated community of gamers helped bring our vision of a dynamic, exciting world to life. We’re thrilled to now bring the free version of the game to the largest network of PC gamers online.”

As part of the shift away from subscription models, Trion has launched three Rift special editions that contain bonus game currency and other goodies to help them on their way. Details of Rift: Ascended Edition, Rift: Patron Edition and Rift: Ultimate Hardcore Patron Edition can be found over on the developer's blog here.
