Final Fantasy Committee formed to oversee franchise’s quality – report

Thursday, 17th October 2013 23:09 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Square Enix has reportedly put together an all-star team to oversee the Final Fantasy series as a whole, protecting the brand from disaster by keeping quality high.

According to Japanese fansite FF-Reunion, as translated by Nova Crystallis and Siliconera, the newly-formed Final Fantasy Committee is tasked with ensuring the quality of releases moving forward.

The committee will be led by Yoshinori Kitase (director of FF6, FF7, FF8 and FF10), Hajime Tabata (director of FF Type-0, Crisis Core: FF and Before Crisis: FF), Motomu Toriyama (director of FF13, FF13-2, Lightning Returns: FF13 and FF10/10-2 HD remaster), and Naoki Yoshida (director and producer of relaunch FF14: A Realm Reborn).

Yoshida’s inclusion is interesting, as it shows Square Enix has a lot of faith in his reboot of Final Fantasy 14; previously, the developer worked on the Dragon Quest series. Another interesting point is that Final Fantasy 15 director Tetsuya Nomura is not on the list, despite supplying some of the franchise’s most loved character designs – but reports suggest he is too busy with other duties, presumably including the Kingdom Hearts series.

The Final Fantasy brand has endured a bit of a battering in recent years – the launch of the original version of Final Fantasy 14 was a disaster; fans have become frustrated waiting for the games in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series; and Final Fantasy 13 and its first sequel suffered critical backlash.

Thanks, AllGamesBeta.

If you have to do this it means your already fucked.

    Meeting room:

“Now guyz, just where did we go wrong?!”

    Everyone else:

“You didn’t evolve with the market, and your product didn’t contain solid enough playability to warrant so many iterations…”

    Meeting room:

“Forget that! Let’s make another Final a Fantasy game!”

Oh, cool, they finally realize the Final Fantasy series has been getting treated like shit and they need to show more respect, I can’t wait to see all the good games about t-

“Motomu Toriyama (director of FF13, FF13-2, Lightning Returns: FF13 and FF10/10-2 HD remaster)”

Fuck it. Final Fantasy is dead.

    “Motomu Toriyama”

Get rid of this guy and we’ll be fine. He’s everything wrong with the series.

@4: Unfortunately, that’ll never happen because to bring back Sakaguchi would be to admit they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing at all and actually putting the franchise and the company over the inflated egos they’ve acquired during the past ten years of internal wankfests.

That’s literally the only reason Toriyama is still allowed to be on committees like these ones. Any company that wasn’t full of this sort of hack-filled cronyism would’ve seen he was the problem by now and at absolute minimum shifted him toward making brand new IPs. They apparently would prefer to continue to ruin the IP, bleed money and potentially bankrupt the company than actually do what they’re claiming this PR stunt was made to do.

I know right, people still play these games?

For me, FF9 was the last one I played… The series has such potential and not one release since 9 has made me say ‘Im buying that shit! looks fucking awesome’

Such a shame too… Such potential wasted :’(

“Motomu Toriyama”…/checks this director’s rap sheet. Uh. He must have overheard everybody else talking, and misunderstood. He’s responsible for THAT lot, and they want him to guide the franchise?
Yoshida’s overseen that game (FFXIV) from the brink. No doubt that he should be in the group. He put himself as the buck stop, right in the firing line, as customers were outraged and disappointed in the state of the newly launched FF mmo. He said if it was no quality title then there would be no payments until it was in acceptable state. He and his team put the time in, that needed to be takwn. And, To their credit they have effected a great turn-around for that game.

@8 Not another one that missed the brilliant XII? :(

It’s really rather simple. Clean house character wise with a DC/Marvel style “infinite worlds collide!” story.

Then start fresh with a new season. I thought the Japanese were good at comics?

Kitase-san should freaking stab a rabbit for fucking up FFX’s battle system. I blame him since he is the DIRECTOR! FF6 and 7 were amazing in everything. 8′s battle system sucked balls. Once again, 6 and 7 were just pure awesome. We need a mix of those two – learn permanent skills from an Esper or Materia and master the Materia and combine them to get some cool effects.

    Heh ..

Biggs and Wedge haven’t made a proper appearance since FFX.

@9: Final Fantasy XII is one of the best FF titles out there. I love it to pieces. I think it has – from ALL the FF games – the best art-direction. Every character, every building, every little piece is full of life and details.

Wish Square would remake it and release it with the International Zodiac Job System. Neither Europe nor America received that version. This was supposed to be the best version of the game. Or simply release it on PSN with the International Zodiac Job System.

The ports to mobile ruin the quality

    @15

No they don’t. They are actually pretty well polished for a mobile game and the fact its pretty 1:1 to the original with updated graphics is nice as well.

@15: The ports are probably the only thing keeping money flowing in from the Final Fantasy franchise now that Squeenix has destroyed it every other way. The ports make the games available to people that may not have other systems, it’s fairly cheap to do a port compared to making a game, and there are plenty of fans of the old games that will buy absolutely anything that comes out even if they already bought it 8 times.

Drop Toriyama and beg Yasumi Matsuno to come back

Ditch Nomura and Toriyama, and put Kitase and Yoshida in charge. There you go, series saved.

I’d loved to see the old guard back – Sakaguchi, Uematsu and Amano, but that’s simply not going to happen.

I loved XII, but I doubt Matsuno would return either.

Open World with cities/villages, real time combat system, lots of exploration and hidden items and for the love of god; no female protagonist.

Also, a coherent story might be a nice change of pace.

C’mon SQEX, you can just call Sakaguchi for guidance and not to mess up things again.

@1 “If you have to do this it means your already fucked.”

I was wondering if anyone would point this out and sure enough you nailed it on the first comment.

Really, is there any more hilariously ironic remedy for the Final Fantasy franchise than a large, expensive committee with no particular artistic vision and no mandate besides its own existence?
