Killzone: Shadow Fall team at Guerrilla Games working on new IP

Monday, 30th September 2013 15:27 GMT By Dave Cook

Killzone: Shadow Fall developer Guerrilla Games has confirmed that members of the shooter’s team have moved on to a new IP.

Speaking with Eurogamer, lead designer Eric Boltjes said that the team wanted to branch out into new types of games, and that work had already started. He explained, “I can be true about it, yes. That’s definitely what’s happening right now. I can’t tell you what we’re thinking of but yes.

“As a studio we do want to branch out, and we have started work on a new IP, something completely different to Killzone. I don’t want to say anything about it right now, but as a studio we do want to keep it fresh.”

Killzone: Shadow Fall is out in November, so understandably, Guerrilla’s design team has shifted focus to the new project. Boltjes continued, “Usually what happens is at the end of a game people start to roll off. The artists and the coders work the longest, and then QA. But the designers, at some point their work is done. They’re not allowed to touch the game because that changes everything for all other departments.

“So about three to four months before you ship, the designers sit down and think, what can we do for the next one. That happened then [with Killzone 3 to Shadow Fall] as well. So, about three years ago we went into that phase. The really tricky part about that phase is not trying to do too much.

“You have a room full of people and they all have a different idea of what they want to change about the game. They can’t do everything, especially if you only have two-and-a-half years to build it. So it’s streamlining that process of what we want to do to this is what we’re actually going to do. That’s the tricky part.”

Boltjes wouldn’t be swayed on the project, but it’s official. What would you like to see from the team? Let us know below.

Stay tuned for my interview with Boltjes this week on VG247.

Welp, it’ll be darned pretty whatever it is.

The way things are going with next-gen it’ll prolly be something MMO-related right?

Lots of talent, great level designers/coders. Would love to see an expansive world, perhaps RPG/Adventure. Pretty sure whatever it is, it’ll involve shooting things from a first person perspective though.. :(

How does a fantasy themed FPS with RPG elements sound?

“Looking for a Dumbledore amongst FX Artists” “sage-like leaders” “FX wizards” “Like a modern day Daedalus” “monsters and ensnare the heroes” “heroic concept artists spoken of in legend” “little like a god”

“Pitches: listed zombies, werewolves, steampunk and Ghost in the Shell as pitches. Apparently the steampunk one didn’t win out, but it did get iterated on. Eventually the team morphed the idea from being a Steampunk Sherlock Holmes taking on monsters like Frankenstein to a retro-futuristic ’70s-punk title called Dark Science. Players would be Jake Crowbar, a Dirty Harry type, who takes on all sorts of monsters.”

Monsters seem key here, although could be anything now.

I wonder if it will follow the Borderlands / Destiny template seeing as they are pretty comfortable with FPS?

That gives them maximum ability to offer subscriptions/DLC/f2p options etc… in a genre they are comfortable with.

Not hugely excited as Killzone was one of the most medicore and overrated exclusives of this last gen IMO.

The best game being on Vita, and thats purely because it has zero competition from another quality FPS on the system. Killzone was Sony’s answer to Halo but just ended up being half baked eye candy on PS3.

Doesn’t that sound quite similar to the setting in ‘The Order 1886′?

Just checked the official site, no mention of anything. Actually applied there a couple weeks ago, I mean it’s like right around the corner from my house. Close call, it was between me and about 2700 other guys.

I had witty dutch jokes, they probably had experience working in AAA.
    eh, win some..

Does it? I hardly noticed ;)
A game is only good or bad if it has competition? WTF is this?

I doubt they are working on a RPG, Dark.

    It’s probably a shooter.

“The really tricky part about that phase is not trying to do too much.”

The really easy part is churning out another game that’s bog-standard. I like Killzone more so than other shooters but unless I’m masochistic enough to go online, there’s nothing at all to do with those games, the lack of innovation is frustration.

I’d like to see them do a game where you can interact with the world in at least ONE other way than firing a gun.

A fantasy based FPS please, like Hellraid/Heretic/Hexen/Witchhaven

A next gen PS4 exclusive in that style would be amazing.

I eagerly look forward to what it is they make next. Have always thought they seem more capable than what they’re producing ATM, but still, Shadowfall does look great.
