Hellraid: Techland’s latest trailer is an interactive adventure game, play here

Hellraid’s latest trailer is a neat ‘choose your own adventure’ style affair, that sees you helping a trapped hero escape from a demon-infested dungeon. Play it here.

It’s a violent, action-packed RPG from Techland, and it’s coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. I interviewed the studio about how it works – from stages and combat, to random maps and co-op. Read what they told me here.

What do you think of the clip above?

Yeah, I was just about the say the same thing. This could be a valid successor to Hexen, or it might not be. It’s hard to say. I worry about the way they’re going over the top with the gore, though. But eh. It might be okay. I’ve conflicted feelings about it, I’ll see how it pans out.

I remember loving Hexen though, and Hexen 2. I think Hexen 2 was one of my first 3D experiences of a 3D Metroidvania. It wasn’t bad.

I decided to poke a Let’s Play of Hexen 2 to see how accurate my memories were of it. It still looks mildly interesting. Most of what makes it interesting is its obsession with buttons. I remember when games were obsessed with buttons and secret buttons, that was great. And the buttons would either mean secret good things, things you’d have to figure out, or your potential doom.

Duke Nukem 3D loved its buttons as well, and that made multiplayer maps really fun. What happened to interactivity? I miss buttons.

And I know it tends to be reviled, but I really miss first-person platforming, too. And just platforming in general. I love precision jumping in games, it’s one of those few things I’m extremely good at (that and arcade racing). So I liked it. Portal had some of that, but I wish it were more common.

Buttons and platforms, casualties of a bygone era.

This Let’s Play is making me want to play Hexen 2.
