PS4: Kinect-style gesture navigation will feature via PlayStation Eye, confirms Ito

Friday, 20th September 2013 09:55 GMT By Dave Cook

PlayStations 4′s camera bar will allow for gesture-based menu navigation, similar to Microsoft’s Kinect format, Sony’s Masayasu Ito has confirmed.

Ito confirmed the feature during a Tokyo Games Show roundtable event today, and stressed that the mechanic could be established and expanded upon through future updates. Ito added, “but it could go deeper,” but couldn’t provide any further insight.

The PlayStation Eye camera bar allows for voice and facial recognition, and with gesture control combined, seems to offer a similar suite of uses to Microsoft’s new Kinect sensor.

What do you think of the above? Will you use the camera bar? Let us know below.

Woop! Any PS4 Eyecamera news is good news in my book!

I’ve pre-ordered it on good faith that it’ll eventually be supported by 1st and 3rd party alike; early signs aren’t great, but I hold out hope.

Also because my girl loves Just Dance and has pre-ordered the new one for the PS4 launch. S’all about maximizing the party/casual aspects in terms of squaring the purchase with the Mrs ^_^

You can do Open CV type detection w/ PS Eye.
However Kinect IK – matching is done server side.

You do know that the EyeToy on PS2 could do voice recognition and gesture commands ten years ago? And that the PSEye was doing facial recognition (including gender, expressions, approximate age), directional microphonics, voice ID and multi-point tracking six years ago?

Well, maybe you don’t. You do now.

No, it’s not as good as Kinect, which is about to get even more impressive*. But to call the PS4 camera a copy or a clone is factually incorrect. Sony was doing it years before MS bought the Kinect technology off that Israeli company.

    * shame about the games though

    @8 See this:

Kinect is a more advanced copy of the Eye. The thing that was really cool about the original (Milo) turned about to be a fraud that never really existed in the form that the snake oil salesman known as Peter Molyneux claimed it was.

Still waiting for its killer app. Shame, because it is clever stuff.

People bitched about the One because it is not optional and because when it is connected it is ALWAYS collecting data even when on standby.

    Try again.

Kinect without privacy breach anyone? Sounds good to me.

Kinect is optional. You can turn the camera off whenever you want, and it’s off when on Standby.

This and Kinect works the exact same way, so if MS can spy on you, so can Sony.

@16. They changed the way it works. But AFTER the outcry. At launch, they said it had to be connected for the console to work, and listened and watched even when the console was on standby. It was weeks later they said it could be disconnected. So the outcry was justified, and it worked.

@16 Except for Microsoft/America being looked at more like a spy than Sony since the NSA affair.
