EA insists it has a ‘very good’ relationship with Sony

Friday, 23 August 2013 11:28 GMT By Dave Owen

Following a number of Xbox One exclusive announcements from EA at gamescom, some have speculated that the publisher is throwing in its lot with Microsoft and alienating Sony. EA Labels president says that this simply isn’t true.

The biggest news that every launch Xbox One will come complete with a free digital copy of FIFA 14. There is also Titanfall, which has been labelled one of the best games at gamescom, which is an Xbox console exclusive, as well as unique FIFA 14 features and timed-exclusive Battlefield 4 DLC.

Gibeau has now told CVG that EA is not favouring any particular platform, and that it’s relationship with Sony is “very good.”

“We’re changing nothing in our policy about being platform-agnostic,” he said. “One of the things that struck me this week is how a tactical deal with one of our platform partners has been blown out and perceived as strategic tilt – that’s a messaging error on our part. There is no strategic tilt.

“The Sony platform and the Xbox platform are both very important to us. If you look at the previous generation we did tactical deals with both Sony and Microsoft throughout the cycle. Titanfall is different, it’s an EA Partners game – everything else is platform agnostic.”

Gibeau goes on to stress that for EA it’s important that both platforms succeed, and praises Sony for their ‘exceptional’ next-gen transition.

“It’s a long cycle, and certainly there’s potential with Sony exclusivity deals too.”

Well, They won’t say the opposite, they have received a lot of cash from Microsoft without doubt. What they don’t know is that PS4 will be more successful and will be more popular certainly (On the web and on the preorder list at least) , thus they’re turning their back at what seems to be the most profitable nextgen console. Nice choice EA, Moore is not better than the others he still make the wrong choices. X1 might be a huge mistake for microsoft and EA might sink a little with them, but do not be afraid Moore in the end the innocent Game developpers will be fired and suffer from the consequences of your decisions not you….

X1 is an expensive UNDERps4 with less power, less first party IP and less freedom of course.

    This is getting old.

The hardware of the consoles have never been more similar than what they are in the next gen, and games have ALLWAYS looked/performed identical on both systems with a few exceptions in the past.

Even though one system has more power on paper doesn’t mean shit until you get games showing it.

@2 It’s funny how you based your comment on the assumption that PS4 will be more profitable than Xbox One.

    Lets put it this way.

System A can run a game in 68 FPS.

System B can run a game in 59 FPS.

Will you notice a difference? NO.

Watch the first minute of the video.

    Huge graphical difference? NO.

The difference is EA still have games (upcoming) that are actually profitable on PlayStation platforms.

  8. Joe Musashi

@6 I tend to agree with your sentiment on this one.

But that youtube video is running at 30fps anyway so…

@7 Oh, I’m sure there’s a multitude of factors that make a difference between the platforms in EA’s eyes. Just that the statement is so eerily familiar.

    @8
Point is that the difference will be so small that you can hardly even notice it even if you got the two consoles running the same game side-by-side on the same screen.

Sure, there will be differences in the first party titles, like Killzone will probably look better than Titanfall. But then you have Forza 5 looking better than Drive Club on the other hand.

The architecture of the ps4 is better in many points,

Better GPU we’re talking 32% more processing power, and Sony plugins and own modifications to the hardware for example : hUMA (by AMD)
    http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/164557-ps4-will-use-its-unified-architecture-to-pound-xbox-one-into-the-dust-eventually

AND above all : way better relationship with the Japanese Market, japanese games have a great influence on the Europe Market AND it’s 100 USD/Euros cheaper.

SO I’m not seeing the future or anything but that’s just my expectations based on some facts you should try it will help you take the right decisions, I’m sure you bought an HD DVD reader back in the X360 era ^^

  12. Dendroball

@2 Absolutely no drama or exageration in your post at all !!

You’re speaking as if Sony already won this generation and Microsoft already crashed as the fight over sales has not even begun, what previous generations taught us is having the most powerful machine doesn’t necessarily mean victory (Game Cube anyone ?) and moreover PS3 despite a higher price and quite a backlash at launch recovered and even shipped a bit more units than Xbox360. What matters are the games pure and simple, even with being a tad weaker on hardware specs if MS is delivering compelling games, the damn console will sell no matter what. A wise person wouldn’t write off any console especially even before its launch at the risk of looking stupid down the line.

And even if Xbox one is the disaster you’re describing (which again is highly unlikely), EA will just take its games and exclusives and bring it to Sony and no one will be fired because a game supposedly underperformed.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. FabioPal

@11 You’re making, again, an assumption for which 32% more GPU power (I’d like to understand where did they take that number from tbh, and 32% of what?) will result in a “more profitable platform”.

The games, services, marketing strategies, environment, support, exclusives, timed exclusives, perceived value etc. make a platform more profitable, not just a number associated to the “GPU power” or “more powerful” or even “japanese games have a great influence on the Europe Market” (since when?).

If you feel comfortable stating that the PS4 will be more profitable than the Xbox One, (which basically means that you can forecast 10 years of lifetime of two of the biggest entertainment platforms on earth) before any sales figures and just because “32%”, then, guys, the new Nostradamus is on vg247… or a time traveler perhaps.

  14. Erthazus

I like how some pathetic nerds talk about PS4 power.

but in reality it’s underpowered POS with AMD GPU and CPU and unified memory which is pathetic. To call both of them “Next Generation” and “more teh power then XB1 or PS4″ you should be :

    a) 12 year old
    or
    2) fanboy

Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One in 1080p can’t even do 30 fps without Microsoft Games studio help (without the best Windows 7 or 8 devkits. L A W L)

and so far there was no next gen game on both consoles. All what was shown was available in 2007 on the PC. Smooth textures, 1080p, Anti-Aliasing. That’s all have been done already.

In 2 years you are going to see the same thing but now in 1080p because you know, hardware actually can do That in 2013 what PC did since 200X years.

    You are a dumbass.

There is NOTHING out there today that comes close to what we saw of The Division at E3. Also, Forza 5 looks on terms with Project Cars on PC, which is supposedly the best looking PC racing game ever.

Or are you going to tell us that Crysis 1 looks better than that? You have no clue.

    Try harder.

Also, find me a PC from 200x that can handle graphics like The Division and Titanfall/Killzone etc.

MS did a lot of profiling on game code to see where the major bottlenecks are and design the X1 and their compiler around their findings.

So far games on the X1 are looking very good overall.

X1 also have the advantage of dedicated servers (PS4 games can have them too but it will be more common on X1) and I can’t wait to see what devs will come up with about Kinect.

I dunno, they had a hell of a time getting Sony to let their Mass Effect 3 players in on the weekend community challenges, there was a alot of “it’s his fault, not mine” happening on both sides…

Anyway, you can’t read much into the fantasy sports features. If Sony offered them, EA would have participated I’m sure.

People are probably making the claim because Activision, at least when dealing with COD, leans toward Microsoft, and they think that’s what they see happening again with Battlefield getting DLC first on XBL.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. FabioPal

@25 That’s actually a good point, with Titanfall exclusive, Cod and Battlefield timed exclusives on dlc… I cannot see how Xbox one is NOT going to be profitable.

And then, guys, let’s be honest and not just twelve-years-old-fanboys: Xbox One’s launch lineup is far better than PS4′s.

For the records: I don’t give a f**k about who “wins” (wins what exactly btw) as long as there are good games to play, I can easily afford both consoles and all the games I like, thanks to my job ;)

    #25 2 years ago
  26. redwood

in a way the problem (if you may) is actually with sony :) because what has happend is that EA went to both MS and Sony, and tried to pimp out a deal with exclusives, and as usual micro just paid for the games, while sony is simply saving money and relying on their own “better” studios (SM, ND, MM) to give them exclusives which whill stay exclusives no matter what.
as for EA’s bought exclusives, time will tell. Only titan fall is worth the note anyway and it’s also coming to pc.
btw if titanfall is the best title on xbox? than why did people comlain about the daily check ins?

Well if a company goes to both MS and Sony and says “which one will pay more” the answer is always going to be MS. They dominate the PC market for the most part and are perhaps the biggest software developer out there – in comparison Sony have more direct competition in hardware from the likes of Acer, Samsung etc. So MS will be making the larger profit between the two and I’d imagine they’d still be sitting pretty even if the X1 were to fall into the abyss.

I’d say Sony tends to have better (or maybe just more) 1st party stuff which is a plus for them, but I don’t think that means that there entire lineup is better because of that. Right now they have some interesting stuff, but so does MS.

I’ll take the point from a totally different non fanboy position.

Out of the 3 big 3rd party publishers (Activision, EA, Ubisoft), the only one that had financial problems in 2012 forcing Riccitello to step down and some games to be canned is EA.

Acti and Ubi decided to really be platform agnostic and releasing games on all platforms, WiiU included, and dealing with MS and Sony with fair timed exclusive content.

Acti gave timed exclusive DLC to Sony with Destiny and to Microsoft with CoD: Ghosts and Ubi gave “exclusive stuff” for Assassins Creed IV and WatchDogs to Sony and The Division to MS.

EA instead pissed on the head of Nintendo (not entering the matter if they did the right or wrong choice) and so far gave every possible exclusive deal to Microsoft: Fifa14 (full game with pre-launch and content), Battlefield 4 and the exclusivity on Titanfall.

This is not a wise move for EA.
Even if the forecasts for the new consoles was even.
It’s clear to the media that something is fishy, that’s why we read interviews like this one, but most of all, if the console they bet most will not come out on top in sellings, they risk to alienate purchasers.
This is a concept that work for both sides, they’re siding MS now with no balance, but siding in the same way with Sony would have been the same mistake.

Remember that EA is still addressed as the worst company in US, and people is by default pretty unconfident with EA, despite their console of choice.

So I wonder who’s the genius that signed all this one-sided stuff without thinking at the position that EA has in the market and the perception that the consumers have about EA.
Because the one-sided stuff is the problem, not being one-sided with Microsoft.

I don’t see EA as devils, I just think they made a bad marketing move that potentially could not pay at all and could backfire at them, they clearly bet almost all their money on a single horse without having had any proof of his speed and stamina.

Finally, this timed exclusive DLC crap is something that should really leave the gaming world, as well as third party exclusive, since they only cut revenues.

Because Titanfall is a MP game then go ahead. Make me log in all you want but don’t sneak data without my knowledge and on top of it unecessary data for game that I purchase and are SINGLE player games.
I don’t want this, I don’t cheer this, I don’t want to see this. If you (MS or anyone else for that matter) don’t trust me as a consumer who pays high price for a game then get out of my way.

    #32 2 years ago

    @33

Acti and Ubi decided to really be platform agnostic and releasing games on all platforms, WiiU included, and dealing with MS and Sony with fair timed exclusive content

And they are right! As soon as you close a market it is like shooting yourself in the foot. After all, no everyone have 2 or 3 same consoles at home. if you deliver 1 million copy on a platform, what makes you think you won’t achieve another million on the other platform(s).
That is a ridicul concept for 3rd parties to keep all time exclusives and if EA has lengthy exclusives with MS then will making profit on it, they would and will suffer for those exclusive titles.
They are such giants in the game industry that making profit is secondary. What you want as EA is make most profit possible.
That is where EA either way does not believe in its game library and relays more on its name (exclusives/ time exclusive). Ot they are so praised so bad and so hard by a console manufacturer that the deal they get cannot/must not/ should not be missed.

I don’t see EA as devils, I just think they made a bad marketing move that potentially could not pay at all and could backfire at them, they clearly bet almost all their money on a single horse without having had any proof of his speed and stamina.
Pretty much delievered EA’s moto. Yet and again, they do not understand where profit is depends largely how the game is percieved which they tend not to get an hear out to gamers in general, look at what happened to DA1 to DA2 and I am sure more games can be thrown as example. EA’s moto is to make the game target a s many audiences as possible but they really don’t understand it just hurt gaming experience and so its value and so its sells as a result.

@14 Notice how everybody disagreed with wicktus, but you were the first to get offensive and call him (directly or not) a “pathetic nerd”.

I really don’t get the need of people to attack, is it insecurity? rage? what?

Console comparisons aside, I too got the impression EA is in bed with Microsoft. Personally I dislike all this DLC first on one platform or extra gameplay on another. Meh.

AND FOR THE RECORD – Battlefiled 4 DLC is not coming first to Xbox One as it did for PS3 last gen. ONLY the Second Assault DLC pack is coming first to the Xbox One. Just one. not all.

You guys realize that the only real exclusive EA has on the Xbox One is TitanFall and still we don’t know for sure if it’s definitive or only timed exclusive. Then add a few timed exclusives (PVZ Garden Warfare and Peggle 2) that will find their way to PC (including TitanFall) and you can safely assume EA didn’t really bet their fate on the Xbox One success. Even if Xbox One is not super successful (which remains to be proved again), assuming those EA games are good enough, Sony will happily publish them on PS4.

    @37
It is a very good question that in all honesty I doubt will get answered.
If some major EA investors also have shares with MS then yes, there is a behind the scene deal that occurs again and again for power value of shares altogether; therefore, we can’t talk about siding one another anymore but only to make one self happy (investors) in strategy decision; hence still look for Sony for exclusive at exhorbiting price just in case they may say yes.

After all, are exclusive deals exactly the same price for all console manufacturers?

No wonder why EA has been named “Worst company in the world”. 2 years in a row.

bf3 DLCs was timed exclusive on ps3 this gen. It was only a week, but still, they had an exclusive. I don’t see any problems here. Exclusives is not something new and happened on both systems.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. OmegaSlayer

    @41
Honestly I think that the bigger the install base, the less an exclusivity costs, since it’s in the publisher’s best interest to put the game on that hardware and tease the consumers.

So, according to y line of thinking, going full force on an hardware without install base yet is crazy.
