Homeworld, Homeworld 2 getting HD remakes – Gearbox

Saturday, 20th July 2013 15:29 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 will be getting HD remakes courtesy of Gearbox Software, the firm announced during its panel at PAX Australia.

Gearbox purchased the real-time strategy IP for $1.35 million in April during a smaller bankruptcy sale for THQ properties.

After it acquired the IP, Gearbox confirmed at the time it planned to re-release both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 on digital platforms

The Relic Entertainment developed Homeworld titles were first released on PC in 1999 and 2003, respectively.

Gearbox plans to make the HD remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 available through digital distribution, as noted above.

@1 Think really carefully about that. Old franchise, know for some solid games, in the hands of Gearbox.
Or maybe third time’s the charm.

“We’ll just give the development duties to TimeGate Studios.”
    “Uh… Sir, they’ve gone bankrupt.”
“Oh. OK, we’ll just let Double Helix Games do it.”

@4 ahh there’s Aullah, wondered when you’d show. You’re becoming the ps3fanboy to Xbox as you are to Gearbox.

No one can defend A:CM, that was a total clusterfuck, GB did everything wrong on that and they deserved the hell they got.

DNF was still built, for over ten years, by 3D Realms, GB just bought the assets and finished the game to get it released. They were already working with a pile of crap, can’t blame them for that. In retrospect too, DNF was very true to past entries from 13 years prior so for those fans it was nostalgia I guess. If you were old enough to play the original Duke games, then a sensible person would see what DNF was.

Borderlands, Borderlands 2…have been nothing but gangbusters success for GB, critics and fans. You can’t argue the scores, sales, etc. They also have other successes with the Brothers in Arms series.

It’s hard to screw up an HD refresh of games that old, Homeworld and HW2 should be great nostalgia trips for those of us who played them ages ago and a great experience for new players with some refreshed graphics.

As long as Gearbox doesn’t farm it out and they develop a Homeworld 3 internally, I would wager it will be a success and a high quality game. Hopefully they’ve learned the farming out lesson with ACM. All major studios do it, financially it’s one of the only ways to ensure long term stability by taking on projects to have a pipeline for your employees – it’s the same in all software, product based business. Execution is key.

@4 What those has to do with this project?

DNF was shot into development limbo and Aliens: Colonial Marines was fucked up by Gearbox with need to funnel funds and man power into Borderlands 2 development.

Considering that I’ve never really liked anything that Gearbox has put out (I don’t hate them, I’m just not interested in their products), I don’t have a whole lot of faith in them remaking this without tampering. We’ll see what happens, I suppose.

HD remakes without too much tampering would be amazing, though, as those games had some pretty great lore, intelligent stuff, too.

I have the Homeworld OST, but have never played the game.

It will be interesting to finally see the game attached to that exceptional soundtrack.
