Curiosity complete, winner to be the god in Godus

Sunday, 26th May 2013 16:26 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Peter Molyneux’s Curiosity has been completed, with the winner confirmed as Bryan Henderson from Edinburgh.

Henderson received the video posted above. He will be the god in Godus, Molyneux’s next game. He will also share in Godus’s financial success.

Curiosity – What’s Inside the Cube? was the first game from Molyneux developer 22 Cans. The iOS and Android release charged players with tapping at layers of an enormous cube. The aim was to discover what lay at the cube’s centre.

Curiosity released in November 2012.

unfortunately, the big ‘social experiment’, turned out to be ‘viral’ advertising for his new game…

The fact that originally he said the person may not want to reveal the prize, and now the fact that his new game would maybe be less interesting if the person DIDN’T broadcast it, kind of compramises the pure vision for me…

It all sounds like very well crafted bullshit.

and not only was it just a viral marketing scheme, it was a viral marketing scheme that people paid them to be involved in. the game itself was free, but naturally there were a ton of in-app purchases for people to try to get ahead in the game. who knows how much money everyone blew on this just for one guy to be part of a glorified commercial.

Wait… what was in the Cube? This Henderson Guy found it and win, but what was in it now? Just a Popu Up Message about him being in a Game?

in other news ubisoft are allowing fans to be in watch dogs, and just like this game you do absolutely nothing, you are programmed a way and you have no control. congratulations.

@6 you mean they’re not going to use the Tron digitizer so he can literally BE IN THE GAME?

So you get to be a god in the game, and you get a part of each sale of the game for life.

What if he is: Racist, Sexist etc… etc…

Is this ‘utopian god game’ going to allow him to explore his version of a perfect world?

This ‘experiment’ is flawed as soon as money becomes a deciding factor, same as anything.

If this was truely open to anyone. would Molyneaux let the ‘god’ ethinically clense a certain race from the game servers… how far is he willing to go to let someone have free speech?

Can you have same sex marriage? Are these features even available? It’s all bullshit…

Imagine if this guy had been a Neo Nazi and the god game had reflected that… It would have been a cluster fuck…

It’s obviously going to be in areas that aren’t going to cause political uproar, and thus un-important in the grand scheme of things…

    ….

It takes 10 realtime days to build a house…

You can pay .49p to build a house straight away…

Cue the ‘god’ doing earthquakes every 5 seconds to try and get people to ‘buy’ things to increase his profit share…

    Sounds great guyz…

    …..

So many areas this sucks in, can’t even begin to describe them all…

Peter, just make a fucking good game… end of…

@2 What are you talking about? I’m a very positive person. I’m thrilled by this age of gaming. Nonetheless I think that this thing deserves harsh criticism, as it has been a very stupid thing from the beginning. I even downloaded the app. It’s a failure as a game and as a social experiment.
By the way, the prize is advertising for the next Molyneux game.

SIGH…. in every comment section I go to everyone is so negative now. Wether it’s VG24/7 or IGN it’s the same. Stop being so &*$@*$& negative or gtfo. Don’t have anything productive to say like so instead there is “this is going to suck” comments. Just stop yourselves.

VG has some of the worst forums in the gaming scene. The lot of you are jealous, bitter, self-righteous bottom feeders.

If any of you had won, it would be one of the most exciting things you’ve ever been a part of. But no, you didn’t win, so you have to put it down and whine about it. Things aren’t exactly what you wanted so it’s the worst thing ever.

Grow the hell up and stop having a pity party on these forums. It’s not going to help your pitiful existence.

    @15

Dude… What are you on about?!

people aren’t critical enough! Thats why we have such a shitty situation with media and distribution. People happily take it in the ass from so many companies now it’s unreal.

XFactor, XXX has Talent, Acti, EA, Insert shitty media company here…

Everything is being dumbed down to such a level we are now activley happy about participating in our own adverts…

It’s bullshit of the highest order, not negativity… You need to spot the real reason people are pissed off with shit like this.

What with the advent of Google glass and Kinect 2.0, the human race may as well stuff it’s head up it’s own ass and lick out it’s own butt hole. The advertising companies have the perfect storm.

What with ‘reality’ TV, we are now happy whoring ourselves out in the name of corperate marketing. You know when you have complete control…

It’s when people offer up personnal information or compliance without you having to ask…

It’s not about doing anything different, it’s about the project and it’s goals being compromised…

At first Peter said it would be up to the person to contact him on winning. That changed… He introduced various new money making schemes throughout the project, not part of the original ‘goal’ people were buying in too…

Then it turns out it was an advertising stunt…

What part of this scam don’t you understand? It was all a big viral marketing scam. Just look at what i said in @11…

How are any of these issues going to be fixed or looked into? The whole Godus project hinges on the fact that the winner of ‘Curiosity’ comes forward and isn’t a complete sociopath…

What if the ‘winner’ has radical views / criminal records etc… etc… It all seems very far fetched to me…

Look at what happened when that convicted rapist won the national lottery, people went mental…

And this isn’t like the lottery, this person is going to have there views and idiology put into a game… It’s going to be on public display… Unless of course, it gets vetted or important decisions are out of his control… Again, I would say this compromises the intended vision…

Im obvioulsy not saying this guy isn’t anything other than a perfect human being, but, Peter sure was lucky it all turned out the way he wanted…

    Get real
I’m talking about things that don’t need bashing on. Someone won something from a free app. Wether it had in game purchases or not is irrelevant it was still free. A lot of things today are the same way so complaining isn’t going to change it. You think because a couple of bigots complain and let their distaste come out it’s going to change a thing? No. At the end if it makes money, your “critical” comments will be posted in their wall of funnies. You can disagree with things I’m not against that. But when all you have to say is “this sucks” and move on. It makes me think that’s all you write on things that don’t interest you. Get something productive going or simply don’t write at all.

  24. POOP CRUSTY

@23 Wait you think that if he is mental they are going to actually let him put his sick ideas into it? Must be out of your mind. I believe no contract was signed so if his ideas are mentally worrisome, I really doubt anyone at 22cans will actually go with it.

    #24 11 months ago
  25. monkeygourmet

    @Poop

No, not sick… Just outside what most people would tolerate…

The whole point of a social experiment like this should be to see things through to the end and record results.

Lets say the person is sexist for example. Not a cool view, but millions of people are in that sitaution on a day to day basis. Huge companies still trade when the core is still sexist for example.

    Thats just a fact.

Im not saying I would like that persons fucked up view in a game, but without seeing what a ‘virtual world’ can become with a certain person calling the shots, what the fuck is the point of the ‘social experiment’ in the first place?!

You have just bought into the bullshit of this ‘project’.

If it does ultimalty matter what this person personal views are, whats the point of trying to create a social experiment where one ‘god’ controls a virtual world?

If all the big questions are decided by Peters team, why bother doing this in the first place? Unless obvioulsy, it was to drum up free publicity?

Also, if you actually look. The person who ‘won’ this wasn’t being bashed… That was something you pretended happened then complained about it. I couldn’t give two fucks who won this, just the fact it’s a sham…

    #25 11 months ago
  26. Citrus raptor

“Again, I would say this compromises the intended vision…”

And the intended vision was what?

“It’s not about doing anything different, it’s about the project and it’s goals being compromised…”

You’re saying that it’s not about doing anything different, but how would Molyneux even come close to living up to this grand promise if something like this wasn’t the case. I asked for suggestions, but no one seems to have a better idea.

Also, how do you know that whoever the winner is, will be able to do something that’s racist or any of the other things you listed? Are they even possible to do in the game?

    #26 11 months ago
  27. POOP CRUSTY

    @Monkey
I like how instead of a number you call me poop.

Anyways, I see your point but 22cans isn’t as financially stable as other companies that are filing for chapther 11 were. So anything that can potential harm their project’s sale will be canned. The right thing to do is try to get a hold of the person who spent the most time on the app (although that might have been Peter himself) and give him a shot if the winner’s view of being a GOD is too far fetched. Something along those lines. Also I by no means was defending 22cans and their marketing stunts. Just ranting away on commenters lack of ideas…. I know, I’m too critical.

    @27

The vision was changed in such a horrible marketing way when this was introduced:

    http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Curiosity+-+what%27s+inside+the+cube/news.asp?c=50231

This did not aid the final goal in any other way but making his company more money…

This isn’t some poor little dev we are talking about. He just finished with MS…

If he had outlined things like this at the start, I would have more respect for him. If he had actually made a good game… Well, I would have been over the moon! :)

It was just an advertising exercise for yet another ‘idea’ he’s going to find hard to ‘flesh out’…

    @28 POOP ;)

The whole project was compromised IMO.

From the link I listed above… How do we know Peter’s company wasn’t adding more layers ‘on the fly’? Stuff like that, we had no idea on what was actually going on, other than blind trust…

For me, for project like this to work, the persons own personal view of ‘heaven’ would have to be created virtually. And that goes for all the weird shit they believed in.

It actually may have ‘outed’ certain biggoted views to the general public… Imagine if it had been a fundamentalist Christian or whatever…

The game world would have been a joke and outed this view on a global scale. Thing is, the person may have been villified and the project stopped…

Or if the person was very sexist and only allowed female participants basic rights or something…

Would have really set the world alight on a virtual level!

It’s hard to do stuff like this without going the whole hog! :)

Peter always falls into this trap and he should know better now.. He’s a big boy!

    I believe they did compromise.
Like you said Peter is a big boy so I’m having trouble thinking that they didn’t get into this project without a solid plan. One way to stop the controversial ideas would be a contract. Although that would go against it’s proposed GOD Idea but there is always white out on everything nowadays it seems. I just hope he isn’t as stupid and cocky as in the past. His ego can get in the way here.

@40 Even if the game made $50,000,000 (not an unfair estimate), and he only got 2% of the royalties, they would still be $1,000,000.

My brain kept tweaking throughout that because due to his more quiet, hallowed tones, he kept sounding like the vampire Prince from Bloodlines. I expected him to say “Good evening.” at the end of that.

And that’s all I have to say.
