New Xbox dashboard to hit public beta in June or July to prep for next console – report

Friday, 17 May 2013 17:30 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Microsoft will reveal its next Xbox console on Tuesday, May 21 – that’s next week – and still rumors and reports are coming out of the woodwork with no signs of stopping. Today’s rumor pertains to dashboard UI and tile changes and the size of the console.

While one would expect a new dashboard UI to be included on a new console, we’ll play along anyway.

According to The Verge, the new dashboard will go into public beta in late June or early July, to prep for the new console.

The new UI will be refreshed alongside smaller Live Tiles such as with Windows 8.1. The entire look of the dashboard is also being changed, and may be lighter or darker in color depending on what is decided in the end.

Xbox 360 users will be able to switch over to the new console and still interact with friends using Xbox 360 through “messaging, beacons, and Achievements.”

A source close to the site also said that the console will be “smaller and denser,” and the new controllers are “flattened in appearance.”

We’ll find out more come Tuesday, and even more at E3.

Ok, that would be absolutely fantastic if that’s true. It means i could be playing a 360 game on my 360 and friends on the new Xbox can still communicate with me. That’s going to be huge for me, cause only two months after the release of my most wanted game this year, GTA V, the new console will no doubt release and i will be playing this game a shitload. If the new Xbox doesn’t offer BC…i can still be in a chat party with my friends who’ll all have the new Xbox.

    EDIT…

    Got too happy too quickly….messaging.

Ok new Xbox, please offer some kind of BC.

If MS offer B/C out of the box with games like GTA5 etc… And Sony doesn’t…

Well, MS has won before its even started. The attachment rate may double because of this…

I would buy a 720 to go alongside a PC just to keep my Xbox alive, trails, radiant silvergun etc…

Waiting for 2 years to play ‘Last of Us’ on Gaikai is starting to look a little scrappy…

    #2 2 years ago
  3. Moonwalker1982

Exactly man. That would be a huge thing for me and it surprises me Sony didn’t offer it in some way, at least for the big titles. But if MS doesn’t, it’ll just mean i’ll be having the 360 on A LOT. But i hope that’s not the case. Imagine if they announced BC for most of the 360′s titles, now that would be awesome. Still got a big backlog.

@2 Funny how OnLive got ridiculed but sony fanboys say Gaikai is the best thing since sliced bread and will take care of all the B/C woes.

Gaikai will prolly support some popular titles but not the more obscure ones. And even for supported titles the inputlag will be horrible.

I really hope MS will one up Sony on B/C.

    @3

The PS4 can’t out of the box… You HAVE to have your big phat (potentially) PS3 connected to play certain games…

Now, last gen this wasn’t so much of a problem, but this gen; people are still invested in some of the previous gen games…

I have 3 consoles under my TV… As soon as I get a new one, the old one should be retired, but the content should be able to be re-downloaded, ala iPad or iphone…

That is a reasonable and forward thinking way of handling cloud stored data… I’m not a huge fan, but it beats the shit out of repurchasing stuff.

I couldn’t agree more with you. If the next Xbox has this, a HUGE plus for me. There have been plenty of rumors that it would have it, but also some rumors that you need to buy a seperate Xbox Mini to connect to it, so you’ll have BC.

Yeah lol, BC is important, just because I say so.

Here are some facts, non-BC Slim ps3 sold way more than fat one, since removing BC brought down costs significantly.
BC = more expensive hardware/less powerful hardware

Oh, and Wii U is FULLY BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE, so it already WON this gen with mind boggling shipped figures that are half that of 13 year old PS2.

@13: yeah lol bc is not important just because i say so.

if you think it is cool to have 5 consoles connected to your tv then fine. oh i see, this is you dragon, so no bc means you can finally have 2 consoles. ok now i get it.

i would prefer to have bc. if it wont be there i will DEAL WITH IT and keep my old consoles. i love to play older games. i do that all the time. 3ds bc for example is the best thing ever imo. bc would allow me to trade in my old console and still play the old games. it would make switching to the nextgen less expensive. it is a cool feature and good for the consumer to have it. but to me personally it is not only about saving money at the launch of the new systems. i would probably even be willing to pay more to have bc.
if the nextbox will have bc and ps4 wont it would be a whole new perspective for me and i think not just me, that’s all i am saying.

this is just my personal opinion. feel free to disagree.

For me having got rid of my consoles a few weeks back would be drawn on BC features. I like to keep a tidy house and having several consoles plugged in just wouldn’t cut it. Neither would switching them in and out to play. However a Nextbox and a PS4 that plays everything made since 2005 would be huge for me. Yeah, I’d pay extra for it.

  19. sg1974

BC. One of those things most gamers demand and most gamers won’t use.

Anecdotal? Yep. But so is claiming BC is a console seller. There’s no empirical evidence for that. And as someone else pointed out, WiiU has BC in the box and that’s isn’t exactly setting the world on fire so you could argue that the only substantive evidence either way is against the notion.

Backwards compatibility IS important at the start of a generation, and it is a feature that should be encouraged, online purchases especially.

I don’t see why people are so happy about throwing there old purchases away or connecting so many machines to the TV?

When I bought a Vita (first purchase), it had few games. I had FF Dissidia, God of War etc… on PSP. Now, the PS Vita had zero B/C and for me to play those games, I had to re-purchase them even though they were sitting right there on my table, and some were not even available.

Same with PS3 & 360. I have about 50+ games on my 360 harddrive, things that get played mainly when people come over: Trails, NHL, Contra, Virtua Tennis etc…

If I have to lose all that when I buy a new console, well thats just bullshit and defending it is just anti-consumer. I can take all my iPad games with me when I buy a new iPad, why not PS4?

Sony shafted me on this with the PS3. I had a phat B/C PS3. I bought loads of PS2 games on amazon: God Hand, Odin Sphere etc… Then it did the YLOD.

I sent it back and they kindly fixed it AND disabled the B/C without telling me so I was left with a pile of PS2 games I couldn’t play… Bollocks

Also, some games can be deleted from online stores, Outrun HD on 360 for example. If I had not downloaded that originally, it wouldn’t be available now…

This gen has ALOT more online games compared to last gen. It is very important to offer B/C or cloud saves because people are still playing through there backlogs.

  25. Joe Musashi

@22 Your first sentence talks about BC and online purchases. Those are two separate things. The latter needs an understanding of what you have actually bought and the terms under which you have bought it. Those are usually detailed at length, available before your purchase, printed on the screen. Most people tend not to read them.

It’s worth noting that some consoles don’t even let you keep your online purchase in the same generation because they’re tied to the machine, not the user.

Your second sentence is an assumption.

The rest of your lengthy comment is entirely anecdotal.

If you can’t get the gist of what im saying without ‘nit picking’, then you must be an idiot.

The B/C discussion ALWAYS brings 2 sides, im not assuming im right just because of my experiences. I am however questioning why people would NOT want it if they had the choice, and summerising the plus points of a new console offering it next gen.

Of course you are bringing in the topic of Nintendo’s shitty, shitty practices regarding online purchases. It’s funny how your obvious Sony bias kicks in when I mention their business practices and my personal experiences…

Just because I left Nintendo out of my post, doesn’t mean I don’t think their business practice is equally as backward and anti-consumer.

Well, it’s nice to see you have finally come down off the fence you have been sitting on this whole time.

Also, what kind of person signs off their posts with their username initials?! Is that your trademark? Believe me, your pomposity is a much easier way to remember you…

You claim “nit picking”. I see logical fallacies, hypocrisy, double-standards and a fondness for moving goalposts. Express a valid argument showing consistency and neutrality and then there won’t be any nits to pick.

Instead of acting childishly and trying to smear someone’s character to dismiss the points they raise, I’d rather tackle those points head on.

Regardless, your key argument on BC is based on anecdote. Which proves entirely my point in #10.

Oh, look at that, I managed to respond to you without claiming you ‘must be an idiot‘ or any other name-calling. It’s probably worth remembering who starts flinging insults around when making heartfelt pleas about people lowering the tone, following people around, taking things to a personal level and being “backstabbers”.

No you weren’t. You were making grandiose claims about attachment rates and fanning the flames of console wars. This is your second sentence of the first comment you made:

“Well, MS has won before its even started. The attachment rate may double because of this…”

This is what I mean about logical fallacies. You make incendiary comments designed to provoke incendiary responses. You either do this thoughtlessly or deliberately. Neither absolves you of accountability.

@34 Given your 1-minute reply to #26, and their 1-minute reply to yours and given the nature of that exchange do you genuinely think it’s a wise idea to talk about forging alliances and back-stabbing?

Why, if you’re so against this behaviour you perceive of others, do you practice it yourselves with such clear relish?

People agreeing with each other are neither an ‘alliance’ or proof of alt accounts. People who have an opposing view are not automatically ‘fanboys who can’t see the simple truth’ or backstabbers.

This whole knee-jerk reactionary conspiracy-theory logic and labelling is tiresome and telling.

Your breaking things down to an absolute. Yes, by doing that you are right. Well done…

    (Another Zen moment for you)

But, the issue of B/C is relevant to more than just myself. MS / Sony don’t just work off my wishes.

PS3 was advertisised as having PS1 & PS2 compatibility… It was a PLUS point and a feather in it’s hat. MS made sure selected Xbox 1 games worked on the 360, again, it was a plus point.

Since the advent of the HD remaster, this may be a dying feature. Not in the consumers benefit, but to a publisher who can re-package something and make you buy it twice, three times, whatever.

How many films have you bought on VHS, then DVD, the Bluray… To the point where a lot of Blu Ray movies started to offer a ‘Digital download’ aswell, or albums offered an MP3 download along with your CD.

These measures also helped to combat piracy IMO. No one likes buying the same shit over and over and over again.

This is ultimately my point… I didn’t realise I had to spell it out so much.

If no one cared, we wouldn’t see articles regarding Gaikai and B/C all over the place.

Again, Sony saw Gaiakai and the potential revenue it can make re-selling you old games through the service. Also, in the PS4′s case, B/C is almost impossable thanks to the CELL cpu in the PS3.

When it comes down to it, I don’t think MS will even offer much B/C, there is simply too much money to be made in HD ‘remasters’ or digital downloads these days. If it DID offer full B/C for games like Gears, GTA 5 and Left for Dead 2 for example, yes, I think it would be a huge plus point.

People could keep their games, sell their 360 or give it too a family member / friend which would also be free advertising to MS and potentially create more revenue. All positives, and the best a consumer is really going to get in a situation like this…

I referenced Apple and the iPad / iPhone as a great example of ‘cross pollination’ through their products.

Buying media; Games, Movies, Music filters through onto all the devices you own. This should be a standard feature with the next gen.

Why on earth would people want to pay for the same thing over and over again like Nintendo’s currant model?! It’s shitty business practice and archaic in this ‘online world’…

Sony CAN’T offer this in any easy way, but MS doesn’t really have as much of an excuse, but, again, I can’t see them missing out on all the extra cash non-B/C gives them access too.

Sony & MS haven’t even mentioned if XBLA or PSN games are instantly playable on PS4 / Durango, not directly B/C as you kindly pointed out, but still in that ballpark and a huge deal too many.

Your gamerscore and profile will transfer over, but can I download all my XBLA games on Durango? What if I want to play Trails HD when friends come over? Do I have to plug in the 360 or what?

Also, with Games on demand, there full games, but actually 360 titles… Will those transfer over? I just bought alot of Games on Demand in the Xox sale, Max Payne 3 etc… Will those be downloadable on 720?

Now, Im not expecting you to answer these questions for 1 second, but these are questions a lot of people have when considering a next gen machine. Sony aquired Gaikai for ALOT of $$$ and B/C will almost certainly fall under this, so there is evidence that all the main companies take this seriously.

    @30

In this instance it’s more about highlighting ‘anti-consumer’ practices wether that be MS, Sony or Nintendo.

“Well, MS has won before its even started. The attachment rate may double because of this…”

This was a responce to @1, the first person who mentioned B/C… Well done for ‘plucking’ my comment out of the air without any context…

    I forgot rule #1 here…

If I don’t qualify my comment with IMO IMO IMO, people jump straight on it…

At least I put ‘may double’… I don’t want to be accused of wrongly predicting sales…

“If I don’t qualify my comment with IMO IMO IMO, people jump straight on it…”

When you make grandiose universal claims in the manner you’re fond of doing, that’s the signal you send out. But this excuse is backpeddling 101. People love to assert their view as fact and when challenged claim they were misquoted or wronged in some way.

“At least I put ‘may double’… I don’t want to be accused of wrongly predicting sales…”

Actually, you referred to attachment rates which are a significantly different metric than sales. And, logically, the only affect BC could have on attach rates is an indirect and negative one.

You do also realise that the “IMO” argument takes you straight back to what I said in #10, right?

“This is ultimately my point… I didn’t realise I had to spell it out so much.”

Ah, now you tell us what you really meant! Your point. See, simple points are hard to grasp when you bury them so deeply amongst diatribes of personal anecdotes and carefully selected (and carefully omitted) references to specific platforms. Your signal to noise ratio suffers. And don’t make out like you’ve been clear but others can’t see your point – you can’t even quote yourself correctly (sales/attach rates). If you can’t follow your own rhetoric you shouldn’t expect anyone else to.

    @47

Happily ignoring anything I said in #45???

Does that not warrent any reply, or does it not fit in with your line of questioning?

Again, my initial comment was in reply to Moonwalker mention B/C. I, like hundreds of others think it is very relevant this coming gen.

It must be a nice life, not contributing anything, but picking apart people’s conversations and analysing every last word people say.

If you bothered to trace the flow of my conversation with Moonwalker, it very quickly turned into a discussion about media and digital rights. Now, what you have done is selected a certain fragment and tried to turn that on its head.

You have also failed to acknowledge any of my other points, obviously because they don’t fit in with your interrogation as I mentioned earlier.

I do feel Sony are doing as best they can with a bad situation by using Gaikai for B/C (if that is indeed what they do), and that the end of this gen has so many great titles, B/C is more relevant than ever. MS can 1 up them in this aspect, thats just common sense. If you can’t handle that, I think your inner fanboy may be showing a little too much…

“Happily ignoring anything I said in #45???”

Given that I quoted from it, I think the answer is evident.

You jump on me, insult me and call me names when I tackle your comments head on. Now you’re eager to take me to task when I don’t. Given your past manner and rudeness, I’m at a loss as to why you believe I’m answerable to you.

It’s great that you’re going to so much additional effort to clarify the remarks you made earlier. It’s a shame you didn’t make the effort at the time. Ultimately, you’re not telling me anything new. Just like when you plead “IMO” – it’s not new and it’s already been addressed.

For the record, I do bother to trace the flow of conversations – something I’ve been attacked for in this conversation. When people do that too much I’ve seen it used against them and presented as some sort of harassment.

You can interpret something unsaid however you wish. But in doing so you only expose your own mindset and prejudices and not those of your target:

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

    @51

I did make an effort at the time, it is quite clear after my first comment:

“The PS4 can’t out of the box… You HAVE to have your big phat (potentially) PS3 connected to play certain games…

Now, last gen this wasn’t so much of a problem, but this gen; people are still invested in some of the previous gen games…

I have 3 consoles under my TV… As soon as I get a new one, the old one should be retired, but the content should be able to be re-downloaded, ala iPad or iphone…

That is a reasonable and forward thinking way of handling cloud stored data… I’m not a huge fan, but it beats the shit out of repurchasing stuff.”

All I have done is expand on this as it was clear you didn’t seem to understand my stance. You tackled me regarding an ‘assumption’ I made…

I can’t argue with that, the only thing I can do is offer up hundreds and hundreds of articles talking about B/C and digital rights. Even people in this thread are discussing the B/C is important to them, so that shows its not just a topic I have plucked out of the air.

Your acting as though I only said what I said in #2. You can clearly see Moonwalker and I discussing the subject after that yet you have picked a part that upset you and clung on to it like a dog with a bone.

The conversation had clearly moved on, you were just trying to play forum policeman again.

The attachment thing was a mistake though, you can have that. I used the wrong word. Heaven forbid you make a mistake with your wording here. It’s not like my latter comments fleshed out my opinion at all…

    Just read this:

    http://www.vg247.com/2013/02/21/ps4-current-gen-psn-purchases-saves-wont-carry-over-get-angry-now/#comments

History seems to be repeating itself…

Ultimately, Apple’s business model is the best I have seen for the consumer, and I never thought I would say that. B/C does not ALWAYS mean a physical disc these days…

Like I said, I have many Games on Demand on my 360, I’m almost certain the 720 will not let me download them again, if I change consoles my digital purchases disappear.

This is shitty business practice no matter how you dress it up. Any product that doesn’t feature this is a huge plus to many people.

    The;

‘Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.’

Was fun, but taking that view, it puts you in a very projected position. It’s very easy to sit on the sidelines and ‘snipe’ where you see fit, it’s a very safe way of living.

I post fairly regularly, on a lot of topics. I can only assume JM dislikes everything I have to say as he only appears to bring me up on things. The only interaction we have is generally him nit picking something I have said or taking it out of context IMO.

He is incredibly considered in what he writes which is noble, but again makes sense given his style of posting. I’m more scatter shot which I suppose in only have myself to blame if someone like him can pick apart what I have to say.

It’s annoying as he is a long time poster and I would have thought he understood my stance on certain things now. For example, I know where OG is coming from, even if he makes a mistake, I understand the point he is trying to make rather than jumping on it. Same with you and a lot of people on here.

    @57

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion too quickly though man. You’d think the ability to redownloading your GoD and XBLA purchases should transfer over easily to the new Xbox. If they announce this, that you can redownload and play all the XBLA and GoD games AND retail games..that would be huge. I’d be pretty bummed if not, cause i got plenty of XBLA purchases and some GoD games too. I simply also don’t have space here in my AV furniture for so many consoles.

    #63 2 years ago
  64. monkeygourmet

    @64

MS has less of an excuse given that the 720 wil be more similar to the 360 than the PS4 is to the PS3…

IMO there is no good reason why digital purchases shouldn’t be transferable, it obviously only benefits the company, being able to repackage the same thing you already own and sell it back to you.

    #64 2 years ago
  65. Fin

There will be NO backwards compatibility out of the box for either console this generation.

Oh noes, you’ll have to keep the old box around for a bit longer.
    Get over it.

    #65 2 years ago
  66. Cobra951

Backwards compatibility is a nice thing to have, but more often than not, we don’t get it, or it goes away with later system revisions. My Wii plays Gamecube games, and I’ve used it more in GC mode than as a Wii. But if my system dies and I buy a new one, chances are I’ll have to pull my GC out of the closet again if I want to play its games. But will I want to? It’s not like there’s a shortage of newer games. I still have my PS2 hooked up (no PS3) as well as the 360. The PC emulates everything older than that very nicely, even though I own (present tense) every console relevant in the US back to the NES. No need to hook them up anymore.

In short, BC is nice, but not worth any angst when it’s missing. Good TVs have a plethora of inputs, and input formats.

It obviously mattered enough for them to ‘gimp’ my old console in the hope I would by PS2 classics on the PSN.

    @72
