Game Dev Tycoon pirates express frustration with piracy

Tuesday, 30th April 2013 02:23 GMT By Brenna Hillier

In a somewhat insufferably cute attempt to meet pirates on their own ground, Greenheart Games released a build of Game Dev Tycoon onto torrent sites to allow pirates to share it freely. With a catch.

Those who haven’t purchased a copy of the game can only play freely for a few hours, before the game warns that their virtual studio is going bankrupt thanks to illegal sharing of its imaginary wares.

The responses from pirates annoyed that piracy is ruining their game development dreams are pretty hilarious, and Greenheart Games promises it doesn’t hate them.

Game Dev Tycoon is DRM-free and costs $8.

Thanks, Edge.

Isn’t the real irony that this is just a copy of ‘Game Dev Story’?

@1 I was thinking the same thing, but then Kairosoft haven’t done a PC version, and these guys are pretty upfront about the “inspiration” on their website.

I haven’t played it but it certainly does look pretty similar, doesn’t it? I told you it was all a bit too cute, right.

While I don’t promote piracy, it isn’t the reason why studios go bankrupt. Studios go bankrupt when they don’t manage their budgets and don’t set realistic sales expectations. Know your target audience, know how much they’re willing to pay and set your budget accordingly. The argument that games that once sold millions no longer do so because of piracy is ridiculous. The games that sell the most are the ones with the most hype and marketing. These also happen to be the games that are the most pirated. I can guarantee that every CoD ever made has been pirated exponentially more than Game Dev Tycoon, yet you don’t see Infinity Ward or Treyarch going bankrupt.

If piracy were to suddenly disappear, F2P and social games would still be on the rise. Why? Because they have higher profit potential. They appeal to a broader audience, both in terms of skill level and in terms of barrier to entry. Simply put, F2P games have no barrier to entry. You get to play the game without paying a penny, offering the same benefit as playing a pirated game, all while microtransactions ensure long-term revenue to the developer.

As I understand it, the commentary is a little more pointed, as the version that Greenheart released to torrent sites causes every game the pirate player releases after a successful few hours to suffer a high chance of abnormally destructive levels of piracy, crippling their studio, before the pictured message appears.

“I can guarantee that every CoD ever made has been pirated exponentially more than Game Dev Tycoon, yet you don’t see Infinity Ward or Treyarch going bankrupt.”

Does the term “scale” mean anything to you? Before we even consider that every CoD now has a flotilla of DLC propping it (as sales fall into decline), and the total audience I can guarantee is far in excess of those GDT is likely to attract. One’s a small indie operation, the other, a multi-studio multi-million franchise…There’s no comparison to be drawn!

Btw, GDT currently has a stated legitimate purchase rate of 6.4% of total copies.

This is a pretty ingenious case of marketing imo.

The game has been out since December and really has received very little attention, this is the only story VG247 has ever run on the game, it’s not on metacritic, it has almost no reviews anywhere, certainly none of the mainstream review sites have ever covered it before this story broke (if you google ‘Game Dev Story reviews’” most of the hits are about this story even).

Now they’ve got free press in every major and minor game news site on the internet and reddit is covered in Game Dev Tycoon posts.

I bet they make a profit off the pity sales alone.

this is a totally blatantly rip off of ‘Game Dev Story’, Greenheart Games have stolen everything, even the name. it is clearly who the real pirate is here and it is Greenheart Games. i stronly suggest people dont download the free demo version, but wait for a real ‘crack’ of the game. so we can get rid of the lazy aholes like Greenheart Games.
