Miyamoto asks consumers to be patient with Wii U

Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:47 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Shigeru Miyamoto wants consumers to be patient with Wii U, stating that the slow adoption rate has more to do with the console being “different” than there being a lack of titles.

Speaking with CNN, Miyamoto said it will just take the market time to understand the value Wii U and its second screen option has to offer, plus, game releases for the console will pick up over the summer.

“There was a period when we first released the Nintendo DS that people would say there’s no way people can look at two screens at once,” he said. “I almost feel like, as people get more familiar with Wii U and these touchscreen interfaces, that there is going to come a point where they feel like ‘I can’t do everything I want to do if I don’t have a second screen’.

“The other thing I think about is how do we begin getting people to understand that and convey the usefulness of Wii U to them. For me as a game developer, obviously I look at Wii U from the perspective of what games I can bring to Wii U.”

Nintendo has said repeatedly that more titles are heading to Wii U and the eShop this summer, and later this year.

The slate includes New Super Mario Bros. U DLC featuring New Super Luigi U, Mario Golf: World Tour, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, The Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Game & Wario, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Young Justice: Legacy, Marvel Pinball, and of course, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.

    Mario Golf? Ooooh interested. Never even knew that was coming.

    Oh and the way you get people to understand and the way you convey the usefulness of the WiiU is by releasing some games which show it. Very little on the WiiU does this so far.

    Edit: Hmmm, Mario Golf appears to be a 3DS game. Is this also coming to WiiU Steph?

    For the first time for a Nintendo console, I find I’m utterly disinterested. More than that, I think the concept and system are horrible.

    They’ve shown me, they’ve demonstrated with Wii that their range and frequency of releases for Europe are inferior and anaemic. Their release strategy, cross-region, archaic and terrible. Yet, they’ve restricted me only to those games in Wii U! (At least with 3DS – ugh…well, the open-region for DS titles was a big part of my reason behind moving up from the DS)

    I won’t be making the same mistake as last time, left relying on the equivalent of a mod disc to make my console enjoyable to return to play and not just serve as a dust gatherer – until they decided to write it out of use in the firmware. In summary, then scoresheet reads…Wii [passable, with a few highlights - Sonic and the Secret Rings, Trauma Center, Zack & Wiki, US No More Heroes amongst them] Wii U [just no!]

    I don’t know if it’s just me, but even as a long time Ninty fan, it comes across as really unseemly for a company to be asking customers to wait, especially when you have zero credit. Ninty generally have terrible 3rd party support, they’re way behind technologically, and their games system lacks many of the features that we expect. This is not school, this is business Ninty, satisfy your customers or fuck off. Don’t be looking for charity when you give none.

    #11 2 years ago
  12. Gekidami

    The main issue is that the Wii U has already at this point lost pretty much all third party support (or it never had it to start with, whatever). So between the meagre first party releases, you get nothing. Again, just like with the Wii, it’ll be the “Mario Box”, only this time people didnt buy into the gimmick, there is no mass market Wii Sports attention grabber, so sales will spike at the release of a first party game then quickly drop again.

    They literally can’t show too much now as they will be buried come the next PS4 / 720 reveal.

    It’s shitty, and they def mistimed the release of the Wii U.

    The problem is, the should be showing us shit loads of stuff now, then shit loads of NEW stuff when 720 / Ps4 are released…

    #13 2 years ago
  14. The_Red

    @13
    Good point. They have to keep everything for two major events: E3 and release of PS4/720. No matter how much Sony or MS have to show, Nintendo is the only one with a console already out.

    This may even end up helping Wii U more than it is perceived to be possible:

    - Sony could tease the next God of War or Uncharted for PS4 and MS would show some Forza and Halo buried under an avalanche of media stuff. Nintendo can show an actual live demo of next 3D Zelda or Metroid (Personal fave).

    - When PS4 and 720 come out, they probably won’t have the next God of War or Gears or Halo at launch. Nintendo can release a major Super Smash Bros or something the moment those machines come out.

    Combining that with a well timed price cut could actually change everything. I just hope this doesn’t result in lesser known exclusives like W101 and Bayonetta 2 bombing or not getting enough attention.

    there is no doubt it will get tons of great games that will be worth the wait. they just have to hold back for now to counter all that ps4nextbox hype a little. it needs a pricecut too though / so i can repurchase one then :)
    you cannot say ninty are lazy with their releases in general atm though. there are many great games for the 3ds. top quality ones.

    I Love you Miyamoto, but there really is a lack of Titels in the Moment. Its a better right now because of Lego City and Monster Hunter, two Titels that takes a lot of Time, but there still is a lack of Games.

    But I am Patiente, and I’m sure Nintendo will bringe a lot of Great Games to the WiiU. So I will have my Fun, but I’m not sure if that helps for the Sales.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. vOL

    Why is Nintendo keep asking us to be patient? Development-wise it’s kinda easy to produce a Mario-brand-name-game compared to other triple A games out there.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Diingo

    A price cut is the only thing that’s gonna save the Wii U. Nintendo has to market it as a low budget console for simple gamers. The days of exclusives are wearing thin amongst the industry, and to be honest i’m tired of exclusives.

    For once lets have a Zelda game on the PS4. Please.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. SplatteredHouse

    “you cannot say ninty are lazy with their releases in general atm though. there are many great games for the 3ds. top quality ones.”

    Don’t be introducing strawmen. You can make such a comment about their releases, on an article about the Wii U. It’s nothing to do with 3DS in here. Nintendo allowed software to run wild on Wii. They failed to properly curate that system. Their own console got away from them! So, it’s not straightforward to point to Wii as a strong positive on that front, and then in piles a Nintendo that thinks it’s fine to consider things dandy, from the Wii…But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

    #19 2 years ago
  20. dreamcastnews

    I’d sooner wait for decent software than have to endure the constant patching system used for the other two.

    Honestly, what happened to the day of shipping a product ‘complete’? I know Nintendo aren’t 100% exempt from this ruling but they are better than your average.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. polygem

    what i am trying to say: they are probably holding back wiiu game announcments to counter ps4 nextbox when they arrive. they support the 3ds a lot though as a substitute. sure that is not perfect but at least it is something you should keep in mind and it is legit that i say it in this thread. it is not off topic or anything. it belongs here. sure it is not cool if you just bought a wiiu and want to play great games on it NOW….but maybe the patience will be worth it. all i am saying. i for one even traded my wiiu in already, i still believe it is an awesome system and mindblowing and unique games that will wow gamers, the industry and critics will come . i think we will see some truly innovative games pretty soon. we should then look at miyamotos words and judge them.

    @20

    Steady on there! :)

    The Wii U still needs a lot of work, don’t you even remember the huge first day patch and hard drive space fiasco?

    @The Red

    I think, ultimatly this is there plan. The Wii u is basically in hibernation mode at the moment. It’s a bit of a shitty move for customers, but I think even Nintendo knows, these last few years have been great for PS3/360.

    Games like Tomb Raider, Bioshock, GOW, Gears, Last of Us, Halo 4 etc… Dev’s have really gotten the hang of the older consoles.

    If Nintendo had released a lot of there good stuff at the start of the year, they may be in trouble for the second half of 2013.

    As much as people are excited, there’s a huge chance the launches of PS4 and 720 will bring problems, poor ports, lacklustre games etc… As is the same on any launch. It takes about a year for a console to pick up speed.

    If Nintendo can bring out a steady stream of games and a price drop, they can very well turn things around. I think when people see things like Metroid absolutly shit all over Killzone when it comes to playability and art design, they will have to re-evalute what the think ‘next gen gaming’ actually is.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. dreamcastnews

    @23 yeah, as I said they aren’t exempt from it, but their software generally launches without needing a patch a week.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. DrDamn

    @24
    And both NSMBWU and Nintendoland had day one patches too.

    @Polygem
    WiiU needs to sell now though. It’s all well and good saving announcements for E3 but they’ve effectively wasted a years headstart if all they have is announcements by E3. They needed a decent launch line up which exploited the WiiU features, a consistent release schedule from then until next PS4/NextBox along with promises of more to come at E3 ready for release this year.

    They haven’t really done any of those things, and if new 3D Mario + something else big isn’t there for this year then they will be in serious trouble with the WiiU in my opinion.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. Digital Bamboo

    I have no problem being patient, but the industry isn’t going to wait.

    If Nintendo recognizes that software is trickling out at the moment, and the adoption rate is slow, why not offer some more incentives for people to keep playing in the meantime?

    They have a huge back catalogue to tap into, they shouldn’t be stingy in sharing it (or expect people to pay the prices they were charging on Wii’s Virtual Console).

    A free SNES or N64 hit every couple of weeks until things pick up couldn’t hurt, and would be a sign of good faith to their customers.

    If it entices more people to pick up the U, or hold onto theirs, then it will pay off down the road (when they want to play the latest versions of those games, or new ones).

    Nostalgia is a powerful motivator; Nintendo knows this well, they just need to act on it.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Yoshi

    Nintendo are stupid. They could have had a full next gen console, which means lots of 3rd party support AND have all the Nintendo exclusives. They don’t seem to understand that they don’t need to be the side players that are trying wacky ideas. I mean, they could have had a next gen console plus extra wacky ideas which weren’t required but would add something extra.

    Seriously, if they did that, I’d actually be tempted to buy it.

    Oh, sweet Metroid. If they release a Metroid and cut the price when PS4/720 come out… I am NOT a Nintendo fan and have been seriously annoyed by them since Wii but this could change it.

    Bayonetta 2 is already my most anticipated next-gen game so combining that with a new non-TeamNinja Metroid and price cut should result in an instant purchase.

    Fuckin’ hell the amount of speculation in this thread is unreal.

    Smash Bros is still about 18 months away (Q4 2014 I’d say). There hasn’t even been any rumours of a new Metroid game, and even if it exists (unlikely), it’s not going to be out for Q4 this year.

    They’ve already said there’s going to be a new 3D Mario at E3, so it might be out for Q4. Not sure about Wind Waker HD neither.

    Stormy times ahead for Nintendo.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. Richenbaum

    There isn’t going to be any price cut. They already said they can’t lower the price any more because they’re already selling it at a loss to get the price as low as it is in the first place, but they expected everyone to immediately run out and buy them all because of the near-Christmas release, despite there not being any major games for it. Not surprising that that didn’t work out.

    @All RE price speculation

    Come on guys, work it out…

    Phoenix, that story was 6 months ago, by the time the PS4/720 is released, the Wii U will easily be cutting a profit. It almost was at launch, so that is not a problem for them.

    The amount of profit Sony & MS can make with higher specs, controllers & camera’s in each box remains to be seen…

    They will be losing for at least a year and a bit.

    Nintendo will be cutting a nice profit along side their big name title releases… Just about perfect if you ask me, even more so if they cut the price.

    The 3DS is starting to print money (again, a huge mark up over the Vita), and Pokemon X & Y and Monster Hunter 4 are almost ready.

    Yeah, to be honest, Nintendo are going to kill it this fall.

    @35 Didn’t Nintendo say if you buy a game with Wii U it becomes profitable or something like that.

    #37 2 years ago
  38. Phoenixblight

    @36

    “Phoenix, that story was 6 months ago, by the time the PS4/720 is released, the Wii U will easily be cutting a profit. It almost was at launch, so that is not a problem for them.”

    Not really Nintendo has a goal and I would assume that goal is where the system starts to break even or make a profit well the system has yet to hit that goal. So unless Nintendo plan on releasing a new 1st party game between now and December. THey are dipping in the red and will continue to do so.

    Also an updated version since you are claiming a difference in 6 months.

    @37

    Right but if they make the price even lower would mean that they need more games to be sold in order to make it back.

  39. monkeygourmet

    @38

    Okay, but lets get down to brass tacks…

    By the time the PS4 or 720 make profit, the Wii U and 3DS will be sailing high regarding profit to manufacture costs….

    It won’t even be in the same ball park… By the time Sony makes profit on PS4, the Wii U will cost Nintendo about $50 to produce on mass.

    The 3DS will be in an even crazier price bracket and then the new Nintendo handheld or tablet will be inbound.

    Nintendo will have released a new handheld before the PS4 has even hit its stride…

    We haven’t even talked about the Pokemon Skylanders game…

    #39 2 years ago
  40. Phoenixblight

    @39

    Why do you keep bringing the 3ds in the mix where did I bring it up?

    Who knows how much of a loss the next Xbox or Ps4 will be going at they both have hardware that is already out and released versus last gen with developing a completely new hardware. For all we know they will be in the same place as the Wii U where it just needs one game to be profitable I honestly don’t see why not the tech behind those two consoles are very easy to attain with the hardware out right now. Wii U is operating at a loss because of the tablet which the other consoles don’t have that if anything they will be operating with tech they are already using; kinect,vita,move, MS surface. This puts both SOny and MS ahead in my book from a business perspective. Both SOny and MS won’t be operating at such a huge loss as they were last gen thats for sure.

    #40 2 years ago
  41. monkeygourmet

    @40

    3DS as its a huuuuuge revenue for a very cheap to manufacture product. I would cut the Vita in too, but it’s not there yet.

    All I’m saying is lets presume Nintendo are almost making profit now on Wii U… Def by the end of the year if you want to play devils advocate.

    The PS4 / 720 is almost certainly going to launch for a slight loss. Remember, the Wii U may have a touch pad, but people keep reminding you how shitty and low tech it is. The main R&D would have been through the beam function.

    The PS4 currently has 8gb GDDR5, next gen Eye toy, PS4 DS with touch pad, plus the huge new infrastructure to cope with all the saved videos and game clips…

    Lets just assume they make a loss for 1 year… That’s quite fair I think…

    By that time the Wii U will be pocket change, that’s just a fact… Weather or not Nintendo drops the price, old tech is cheap as shit… Look at the Wii.

    However, this time the Wii U is HD and the gap is smaller.

    Lets have another chat when we see:

    Mario 3D Wii U VS. Knack
    Metroid U VS. Killzone

    And we can really see where the next gen trumps the Wii U…

    #41 2 years ago
  42. Phoenixblight

    @41

    Uh Ok this is going nowhere. You are bringing things into the argument that have nothing to do with what I am talking about. As far as we know Nintendo have only two games possibly releasing this year a new Mario and Windwaker HD. Not sure where you are getting the idea that Metroid is being made or will release this year. The fact that next Xbox and Ps4 will be selling at prices that match the Wii U will only put the system further on the back burner especially since the games releasing for next gen already will trump the release titles for the Wii U in just number alone.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. monkeygourmet

    @42

    Okay, but we all know the Wii U tech is last generation compared to 720 / PS4.

    It is obviously cheaper to manufacture, the fact it very nearly cut profit on launch proves that.

    We can also fairly assume, Nintendo knows it can’t keep this premium cost up to on consumers when the new machines launch. (Would be business suicide). Unofficial price cuts are already happening as we speak.

    Metriod is a given, same as Uncharted is a oven on PS4.

  44. Phoenixblight

    “Metriod is a given, same as Uncharted is a oven on PS4.”

    WHere is the proof of Metroid releasing this year. THat is what I wondering. THe guys at Retro just started development back in the summer so if they can hammer a Metroid in 18 months, I doubt they will get it out by this year.

    ALso we will see they will be have a quarter end this month so we will see what they will be doing so far every quarter they have increased the loss for the year and lessened the goal for Wii U which doesn’t sound like a company that has a lof buns coming out of the oven soon.

    #44 2 years ago
  45. monkeygourmet

    @44

    I think you are right regarding this year until I see any other info.

    All Nintendo projects must be on hold for the next gen battle. We all knew they are in production, it’s just a case of product placement.

    #45 2 years ago
  46. zinc

    @monkey, Why do you presume the 3DS making a profit, in anyway benefits the WiiU?

    If anything its more likely to encourage Ninty to drop home consoles & focus on handheld.
