PS4 like “the world’s best PC”, says Epic boss

Wednesday, 3 April 2013 00:52 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein seems fairly enamoured with the PlayStation 4, going as far as describing it as a “really perfect gaming PC”.

Rein made this master race-enraging comment in a GDC interview with CVG.

“I think it’s a very smart move on Sony’s behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it,” he said. “Let’s not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 – that’s not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that, we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that.

“The other exciting thing is that when you think about Windows, even Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows. It’s like giving you the world’s best PC.”

Rein said many of the features Sony has announced for the console, like background downloads, are “super convenient”.

“The kind of stuff that they announced that they’re doing, the level of convenience and things like that – they’re making a really perfect gaming PC,” he said.

“I’ve always said that the things in the next-generation that aren’t just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience – the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad.”

I am a PC gamer and I completely agree with him. The ease of the x86/64bit CPU, the mid range GPU and 8GB unified memory in every box with a less demanding OS is great. However, it still does not mean its more powerful than a decent PC. Like others have said it is a higher spec than most PC’s but these said PC’s are not nessacarily gaming machines. But the optimizations that will go into a console game will always out weight what can go into a PC game. PC is and always will have the brute force and stupid amounts of power with crazy texture sizes, frame rates, etc. Consoles will have the ease of use, optimized games, bettee exclusives, larger install base, etc.

Also, I think there is a typo in the article. As 32bit windows can address a maximum of 4GB memory (this is system and GPU memory combined). 64bit is insanely more like 128GB+ but im not sure.

  7. DSB

It’s not hard to see where he’s coming from, but I’d argue there’s better reasons to use a PC than horsepower and spending loads of money on that. Consoles aren’t exactly low drag when it comes to interface and multi-tasking, but it’s horses for courses.

For a games developer looking to keep costs down and production values up, it’s a no-brainer though.

I love how this conversation is even framed. Sony (and Nintendo admittingly) have traditionally used esoteric customized hardware in their consoles which made it a bitch-and-a-half to program for. Coupled with Sony’s poor ability to get a decent SDK out and it has been a nightmare for developers to get started on PS hardware for the first couple of years until better tools are developed and shared among the industry.

Now they are finally using more off-the-shelf style hardware which will make developing on the console significantly easier (I still lament the lack of DirectX, but, you know…) and people act like it is this great new innovation.

So pretty much, this is only news because Sony has traditionally sucked eggs for so long.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. aprotosis

@9 Nah, no greasing needed. Middleware companies like Epic need to get people (players and developers) excited about the next generation. They have their own vested interest at play here. They will say the same thing about MS’s new console when they are allowed to talk about it too.

going 64 bit is a great decision, but about time. I’ve been on 64-bit architecture for 12 years (since xp and P4). And yes, finally having 8GB of RAM without API overhead is good. However, I just ordered my VC and 32GB of RAM for my new rig today. That will be half of the RAM that will end up in my system. Not too worried about losing a couple GB to Windows.

I am excited about the new consoles and their choice of architecture because I expect that games for PC will only get better as a result. But to say that the PS4 is the best gaming PC, is a bit delusional, or for marketing purposes.

32-bit argument is crap clearly vice president Mark Rein is trash talking with out any proof or statistics to back up his claims. For example on stream you can clearly see that there is a lot of pc gamers who are runing their pc at 64 bit OS what’s the new fad with RAM? well guess what pc gamers have been using 8G of ram. Some computers rund 16G of ram.PC gamers are aware of memory limitations there already since well quite a few years ago. A 64bit OS is not a new thing and consumers have had a 64-bit option since 2005, 8 years ago with Windows xp professional 64.most high end GPUs have dedicated video memory of 1-3GB of GDDR5 in addition to the 8GB of system RAM.32bit OS you are most likely using an old laptop or a netbook. If somehow you are on a 32bit OS and you have 4GB of RAM or more, well you better switch because you aren’t using all of your RAM there.

I’m not entirely sure why people are fighting over absolutely nothing? I think some of the folks totally misunderstood Mark Rein’s comment, he is clearly talking on development level. May be worth noting that he did say “most PCs”, and since most PCs aren’t used for high-end gaming, (unless MS made the most recent version of Solitaire REALLY extreme) this is entirely true.

Agree with 26 about the development comment. He is clearly just excited, speaking with a bit of hyperbole, and not referring to those PCs that are built by enthusiasts to crank games on triple monitors.

What makes the PS4 so good is that there’s one single machine to develop for, it’s why iOS devices are so much faster & more fluid than stronger Android devices.

I’d still choose Android because I don’t like iOS limitations & if my choice was between a mid range PC & a PS4 I’d probably choose the PC(if I didn’t have a decent one).

I mean there’s so much more that a PC can do that Sony’s unlikely to ever let the PS4 do & that’s where the downfall of consoles begin. I do think gaming should be a primary focus but that doesn’t mean they should rule out functionality altogether.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. GwynbleiddiuM

@33 True. Has anyone forgot the outrage that the dropping support for Linux caused among fans? Well I don’t expect a full featured OS like windows or Linux, but I have expectations for a considerably powerful device.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. Kalain

So, what he’s saying, in reality, is that a PS4 is a lot better than a non-gaming pc? He’s just said it in such a way that, or reported in such a way, to antagonise PC gamers in general. But, if you read the full text he says:

I’ve always said that the things in the next-generation that aren’t just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience – the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad.

Which then puts it all into perspective of what he is trying to say.

Also, saying ‘master race-enraging comments’ isn’t really good journalism since you asked, in a post, to not name call and yet this will cause it to happen.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. xxJPRACERxx

Instead of “the world’s best PC” I think “the world’s most convenient PC” should be better and that’s why I’m getting a PS4.

@6 It’s true you can address 4 GB with 32 bits but in the 32-bit version of Windows, Windows itself reserved 2 GB for it’s own use. There’s a special boot command you can use to enable 3 GB of working RAM but the application must also be coded to support it. Search for “3 GB barrier” and “Physical Address Extension” if you need more info. BTW, the 3 GB barrier is not a limit of Windows only but a limit of 32-bit OS and motherboard design.

Yay, so a next gen console is going to be as powerful as best PC hardware for the time of release. How unexpected! See you in a year or two when PC’s take lead again.
Even though overall “closer to PC architecture” thing might be a good sign. They might finally start releasing ports of console games faster and better (hello, Dark Souls…) and more of them. And maybe even emulator will be made faster this time….

    #37 2 years ago
  38. Atmey

@37 This claim is a huge exaggeration, the PS4 won’t be better than the best PC, I mean how can you compare something worth 5000 to something worth 500?

    #38 2 years ago
  39. Jerykk

    @7

I hope you aren’t suggesting that console development is somehow cheaper than PC development. It most definitely isn’t. There’s a reason why the PC has more indie games than any other platform. No $10,000 dev kits, for one. Also, the lack of mandatory (and expensive) certification and publisher requirements is also handy.

If you want to make the most of your budget and get the largest profit margins, you make a PC game. If you want to get tons of marketing and hype, you make a (big-budget) console game.

    #39 2 years ago
  40. adge_uk

Yes, several PC’s run at 64bit. Yes, several have 32GB of RAM. Yes, several have incredibly powerful CPU’s and GPU’s. But… and this is key… not all do… So, at the core, you design to a lower spec.

It doesn’t matter if you are running Battlefield 3 on a minimum spec PC or a maximum PC the core game is the same, characters on screen, AI, level size, weapon selection, destructible environments, narrative etc. What the extra bells and whistles add are nicer effects, bigger textures, better frame-rates… But these don’t change the core game.

By moving the base spec up and knowing everyone has 8GB of fixed speed ram, knowing that everyone will be running at 64bit, everyone will have the same graphics card and cpu etc – you can shift that core gameplay up so the levels can be bigger, the AI smarter, more characters can be on screen, better physics etc.

That’s the shift. Yes, top end PC’s will be able to pump out more shiny graphics than the PS4 (but again with a fixed architecture it won’t be a slouch). But by moving the entry point up the type of games on offer will shift.

Geez bored already of the pro Pc or Pro Ps brigades! Who cares? Yes Sony has gone for off shelf components. Yes Pc will be more powerful and you can do more than just play games.

However, we all need to chill out and accept that the amount of money you have to outlay for a cutting edge pc is out of most peoples reach. With consoles the initial outlay is mid to high depending on when you get into their lifespan.

It is the games that count on each system. We have both console and Pc in my family. Each for different reasons, each do a great job at various things.

I am not a fanboy of any console maker, not am I a keen pc gamer. I just love games and tech.

@40 +1. Besides, the PS4 will be better than any pc I can buy/build at the same price in my country, so yeah…not to mention that even a pc with the same specs isn’t as optimized for gaming as the PS4 will be.

@48 “If anything, relatively speaking, the PS4 may be worse than any console released before!”

ooooh son, nooo…That statement is completely absurd and you should feel ashamed for it.

Nvidia Will See Quicker Growth Ahead On PC Market Recovery

    Quick Take

Despite softness in the PC market, Nvidia posted record revenue in fiscal 2013 with a 7% annual increase. Its focus on and success in mobile computing cushioned the negative impact of lower PC shipments.
Since it derives >80% of its revenue from the PC market, Nvidia remains highly sensitive to any adverse development in the PC industry.
Nvidia is the market leader in GPUs and we believe its revenue from the PC market will continue rising due to a revival in the PC market, expanding gaming hardware market and popularity of discrete GPUs.
Discrete graphics remain the preferred choice for gaming applications, and Nvidia is the market leader in both the discrete desktop and discrete notebook GPU markets.
The PC gaming hardware market is estimated to increase from $23.6 billion in 2012 to $30 billion by 2015. The robust PC gaming market led to an increase in Nvidia’s GPU shipments in 2012 and its GPU market share increased by >10%.
The professional GPU market will revive with improving economic conditions and Nvidia will retain its market leadership in the long run.
