God of War: Ascension trophy to be renamed following criticism

Monday, 11 March 2013 22:36 GMT By Brenna Hillier

SCE Santa Monica has confirmed it will alter the name of one of God of War: Ascension’s trophies after an early review raised concerns.

Speaking to Joystiq, a representative for the developer confirmed that the trophy formerly known as “Bros Before Hos” will be renamed “Bros Before Foes”.

“We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game,” the rep said in a statement.

“We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.”

Concerns over the trophy were raised by Adam Sessler in a video review and are two-fold; first, the word “ho” is a sexist slur, and second, the trophy is awarded after Kratos commits a fairly brutal act of violence against a female character. In the context of the story the scene makes sense, but the celebratory trophy, which makes a point of highlighting the genders of the characters involved while invoking a slur, makes it all feel a little slimy.

The update will roll out at God of War: Ascension’s launch, which is March 12 in the US, March 13 in Europe, March 14 in Australia and March 15 in the UK.

“Bros before hos” is a fucking moronic, misogynistic fratboy phrase.

I don’t like the violence in that game, they should patch that out as well.

Lost some respect for the Santa Monica for doing that.

If the phrase “Chicks before dicks” would’ve been an achievement I bet nobody would give a single fuck about it.

  13. Mike W

I really can’t believe he made such a big deal over something so minor and trivial. He also deducted points because of the trophy.

In any case I hope he knows he has to have the same criticism towards other titles that have “so-called” offensive trophies/achievements. He might’ve opened up a can of worms he’s not prepare for.

For example, there’s a trophy/achievement in the new Tomb Raider called “Widow Maker”…. Him being a man, is he going to get offended by that?

I lost all respect for this guy now, I can’t support anyone that is trying to censor “M rated titles”. We get enough shit from these crazy ass activists and politicians.

Its a word and I have used it on males and females there is nothing sexist about it. Its only the context of which it was used does it become offensive which means any fucking word can be offensive.

What they don’t realize, is the damage they do to our industry. If the devs start getting “afraid” of stuff like this, their creativity and expression is going to take a hit. Freedom of expression will be no more, because of flippin hypocrites… because that is exactly what they are…. hypocrites…

They only see what they want to see, they only call upon equality when it suits them, they try being knights in shining armor to get attention. I don’t see people complaining about attempt at rape in movies? Or sexist comments in movies? Or books, or even songs for that matter…. why on earth are you damaging our industry? Just get lost already!!!

  23. Telepathic.Geometry

I don’t know the context in the game, and I think that’s everything…

A trophy title like that would be okay I think in a game like say Bulletstorm, if you chose to save the male character rather than the female, with a corresponding trophy if you saved the dude like “Ladies first” or “Whipped” or something.

Those titles would probably be considered non-PC too, but Bulletstorm is a dudebro game, so it fits.

In this case, it sounds like some chick is getting brutally fucked up, so even for a generally non-PC guy like me, that sounds a bit off. Obviously, I don’t know the exact details, but…

    #23 2 years ago
  24. Phoenixblight

    @23

Because God of War is not a dudebro game? Double standard.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. YoungZer0

No buts. You could’ve done a little bit of research instead of writing that long comment. Kratos just kills a female monster. That is all.

Before you know it, Videogames will include a TRIGGER WARNING feature in front of every cutscene.

“Uh, now I got you, I’m gonna Kill you, you moth-”
“TRIGGER WARNING: The next scene will show off a gruesome murder, do you wish to continue?”
    “Fine, yes!”
“Are you sure? We could patch your through to your best friend so you can talk about your feelings.”

Someone who’s so easily offended by a phrase shouldn’t be playing a game like God of War. Period.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. Telepathic.Geometry

The great thing about this kind of thread is that the misogyny really shines through… :) And for the record, I don’t think that GoW was ever a dudebro game.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Phoenixblight

    @26
Sorry what? Both games are aimed at the same demographic.

Ho is not centric to women. Its a slang term for prostitute which is a male and female profession. This just an example of people pushing their reverse sexism on others.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. YoungZer0

@26: And the ignorance as well.

@27: Don’t call it reverse sexism. It’s just sexism.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Telepathic.Geometry

Maybe I wasn’t clear in what I meant. What I meant was that, unlike Gears of War or Bulletstorm, the main character in God of War is not a dudebro.

    #29 2 years ago
  30. Phoenixblight

    @29

Maybe not but the game’s demographic is for the same people. The teenage boys or those of the same mentality who want to see an overabundance of gore and nudity you know like 80% of horror movies to date.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. Telepathic.Geometry

@27: Come on, are you fucking serious? If a dude says “Bros before hos” to you, are you seriously telling me that he’s talking about prostitutes and not women in general? Fuck’s sake PB. I HOPE you were just trolling me. In which case, touche…

    #31 2 years ago
  32. YoungZer0

OMG, who gives a fuck?! There are many games on the market that have achievements that don’t fit the tone of the actual game. Don’t see you cry about that.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. silkvg247

Bros before hos just means putting your friends before a non serious fling type partner. I don’t see why it’s offensive, unless you literally think it means all women are hos and all men should be put first which uh.. it doesn’t.

    PC is going too far..

    #33 2 years ago

And this is part of why I’ve always hated Adam Sessler. Also, really disappointed by Sony bending on this.

And you guys know I’ve argued about sexism in videogames before with some of you, but this is the type of thing that’s just PC oversensitivity.

    #36 2 years ago
  37. Phoenixblight

Its a term nothing sexist about the term its the context of which it was used. This is just a trophy. Nothing about killing a fury which is a female mythical creature that Kratos kills screams sexism.

    @33

    Thank you!

    Just an example of pussification.

    #37 2 years ago
  38. mreko3230

First, If you’ve lost “all respect” for Adam Sessler because you don’t agree with his stance on this one issue, then you need to reevaluate what you think the word “respect” means to you. I don’t agree with all of my favorite critics and reviewers on everything, but I still respect the hell out of them for other reasons.

Secondly, He never asked them to change it, he just strongly opposed it and evidently, they must have heard from others about the issue. I seriously doubt Sony Santa Monica changed it JUST because of Adam Sessler.

Thirdly, He didn’t knock the score because of the trophy name- thats ridiculous. He gave the game other knocks that would have given it the same score. He didn’t say anything negative about what Kratos does to the female character, he just didn’t like the name of the trophy that was associated with it.

Lastly, to be honest, I myself, probably wouldn’t have even noticed or given much thought to the name of the trophy if I would have seen it. The gaming industry gets more scrutiny than any other when it comes to violence and the treatment of women in its games. It’s a balancing act and I don’t think it hurts anyone to discuss these things openly without the name calling.

    #38 2 years ago
  39. jonahfalcon

Of course, the answer to the completely misogynistic scene is to change the name of the trophy.

It’s basically porn. Violent porn, and against women. And meaningless in the terms of the game as well. It’s just an excuse to watch a woman GRAPHICALLY GET BRUTALIZED IN CLOSE UP.

This isn’t a question of political correctness, and sorry, children under the age of 25 don’t have life background to understand it.

This after Sony Santa Monica claimed “no more innocent people would get killed in Ascension”. So they got around it by calling a woman a mythological bad guy.

And the reason it’s violent porn? There’s no subtext. Do yourself a favor, children, and see a movie called “Irreversible”, in which something similar happens to a man who gets his head crushed in sickening detail by a fire extinguisher – and how the film goes backwards in time.

God of War: Ascension is just violence for masturbatory purposes.

Here’s a question for people who actually played the game: name a reason for the close up brutalization of a woman, in graphic detail?

    #39 2 years ago
  40. Phoenixblight

    @39

Why does Kratos rip off a guy’s legs and beat him with it? Because its Kratos and I would hardly call a fury a woman especially with how they look more monster than human.

There are plenty of movies that do more in detail so where is the scrutiny for that. Oh because its a double standard.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Telepathic.Geometry

It’s not just the name of the trophy, or the violence against a female ‘character’, it’s the two of them together. And I don’t think anyone is saying that it’s absolutely untenable either. Just that some people are likely to be offended, so let’s rethink how important this is to us.

I use the word cunt all the time, but I don’t use it in front of people who I think are going to get all bent out of shape about it, it’s not worth the hassle. I guess that this is simply the same…

ANd we call @44 the white knight syndrome. Someone who thinks he has to stand up for the women because they can’t defend themselves. Its obvious that God of War is not made for you and never was planned to be. Move on, you are not persuading anyone here.

    @43

Its a mythical female creature being killed there is nothing that is sexist. Kratos kills everything and anything that moves. Its what he does and has always been about. Its like getting mad at Michael Bay for scantily clad women and explosions in his films.

    #45 2 years ago
  46. SladeX2000

@39 Are you serious? 3 games in of beating men to death in some of the most gruesome ways in videogames history, and suddenly it’s “violent porn” because a women gets killed on screen? As opposed to Hercules(?) getting his face bashed in for about a minute straight, and Hermes(?) getting his freaking head torn of by Kratos’ bare hands? Really?

But no, no it’s not an issue of political correctness. You’re right, it’s an issue of double standard about violence against men being just fine, but 1 women, and BAM! Misogyny. -_-

Very unfortunately SM is being forced to do this, when this trophy was named according to circumstances in the game (not mentioning it due to spoilers). Just because one stupid old ass reviewer named Sissy took offense as he was suffering mid-life crisis and didn’t even finish the game itself.
The man was so COMPLETELY wrong in thinking the trophy -
” the trophy is awarded after Kratos commits a fairly brutal act of violence against a female character. ”
JUST NO. JUST GOOGLE IT AND FIND THE CORRECT REASON.

Lastly, now that SM will release the patch, if Sissy has an iota of decency, then he must publish another review.
Not that he will do that now.

Game containing sex mini-games for gods sake, and the word hoes was too much?

Did he not play the face-smashing part of Persian king in GOW-Chains of Olympus, which is followed by a sex-minigame?

Damn I hate these fucking crybabies… Just because they don’t like something everybody must pay. FUCK YOU! The world was not made just for you assholes!

what is anyone losing by a renamed trophy? who´s the real crybaby here? good call ssm. right choice to rename and patch it. i can understand why people feel offended by the term hoe. would you like to see a a trophy you´ll get for killing a black guy named: no mo niggas? or a trophy of killing an moslem named: died for the wrong god
i want to see more of this happening. i for one do not want racist/sexist bullshit in the games i buy.
it´s good if devs think this stuff through more. noone is taking anything away from anyone…

    Edit:

@JPRACER: “The world was not made just for you assholes!”
again, not someone who feels offended by an offensive word is egoistic to point it out. it´s easy FOR YOU not to feel offended by the word hoe because you clearly aren´t a women but that´s a pretty egoistic point of view man. the world wasn´t just made for you you know…

@Orbit: it´s a difference to make these jokes in real life, to people who know you and can react directly to it, even in a forum/webpage where people can react to it and tell their point of view. i think that´s even a good thing. the trophy and game content in general, is forced at you though, you cannot react to it directly. no chance for disagreeing or discussion. so it´s much more offensive and it´s good if devs are aware of this and try to avoid it or change it if they realise they made a mistake.

I’m offended by needless, reactionary censorship. Having said that, this whole thing seems to have been blown way out of proportion. Changing the name of this trophy in no way affects the game, and I don’t care about trophies anyway, so my not giving a shit about this is two-fold. Even so, regarding Mr. Sessler and his delicate sensibilities, I’d encourage anyone so easily offended by vulgar slang to seek employment outside the video game industry…and media. My students say worse on a daily basis, and they’re 10.

    #56 2 years ago
  57. polygem

^ it has been blown out of proportion. so much so that i even think it just could have been a marketing trick.
that said, i really believe it´s a good thing to be aware of these things in developing a game and if needed, change stuff, fix it, that´s what a patch is for, totally legit to rename a trophy if you as a dev realise you made a mistake…what the internet makes of that is a different story.

i do not think this has anything to do with censorship, i mean look at the rest of the game….:)
censorship sucks, in this case though the devs just realised that they made a mistake and fixed it theirselves. that´s not censorship, that´s just a good and brave choice.
you know, you´re students saying worse things doesn´t make it right. in fact that even is the problem. people /kids start to think it´s ok to be offensive. this changes if they really have a face to face discussion…it´s always funny to witness. i can witness this in my job almost every day. how people scream and shout if they think they are anonymous and how polite and shy they are if they are forced to have a real face to face discussion with someone they devalued just minutes before…

I cannot believe this has gotten blown out of proportion. It just a game and a virtual trophy that means nothing. People are really just overactiving because of a name of a trophy which i find funny which happens after you commit violence against a women, also this trophy’s name was suggested by a women at Santa Monica Studio. This is God of War for FFS.

The irony here is guys blaming Adam Sissler for blowing things out of proportion… Thousands of guys… If not hundreds of thousands… All whining like butthurt little bitches… Over the renaming of a trophy…

Not a cut-scene, not a change in gameplay, not a removal of a character, the change of ONE letter…

Well keep tight hold of your threatened little nutsacks boys, cuz this is gonna happen more & more often. The days of gaming, being the jolly little frathouse & no girls allowed, is over!

Now keep calm & carry on. Your all acting like hysterical women :-P

@polygem Well, I guess we disagree on a few things. I think this is absolutely a case of censorship (albeit tiny, selective censorship)–someone at SSM thought it might be a bit funny or hip to give the trophy that name, some people disagreed, and they bowed to the pressure. I don’t think that’s brave, I think it’s merely trying to avoid negative press. The brave thing to do would have been to stand their ground, and say, “We understand why some people would find this offensive, but we are keeping the name the way it is.”

You’re right, there is no shortage of “objectionable” material in GOW, but that’s the nature of the beast, if you start being swayed by every little problem someone has with it, where does it stop? How might that change the way the next GOW is developed? I know this trophy name is a very minor thing, not even part of the game per se, but I think you know what I mean.

I don’t think the trophy name was particularly “wrong” to begin with, at least least not wrong enough to warrant all this kerfuffle.

As far as my students, English is not their first language, so most of them don’t even know what they’re saying really means. They’re just repeating what they heard somewhere because they think it’ll get a laugh out of their friends. The ones that say those things are generally very low level, so unfortunately, I can’t sit down with them and have a detailed conversation about why those phrases are offensive. I tend to ignore them because it is not very frequent and never directed at anyone in an aggressive fashion. If they KNEW it was offensive then they might start saying it all the time :) Besides, I don’t agree with teaching that certain words are “bad” (then we’d be back to censorship of language) there are only inappropriate times to use them.

I think it’s more to do with fears of PC backlash than sexism stuff. The world is PC crazy after all.

I wouldn’t refuse to buy/patch the game, doing that makes you just as bad as the people who’d rant about the original name – because you’re also overreacting over something trivial.

  69. polygem

@Digital B.: i always respect your opinion- also in this discussion. i see where you are coming from and that argument is legit as well. it´s a mater of perspective i guess.
this tiny, little trophy thing is making some waves though. this shows me that it is indeed kind of relevant. some litle things do indeed count and can make a difference. i think we should all reflect a little more about our daily life behaviour, how we interact with each other. i think it´s cool if a dev takes a step back if they really think that what they´ve done was wrong, that it´s a message they don´t want to spread. if they just do it to avoid bad press or because of political correctness pressure, that´s not so cool though. in the end also bad press can be very good marketing, especially in this case. i really start to believe we all just stepped into a very clever and cheap marketing campaign :)
there´s a huge sexism debate in germany atm, and it was the ´day of the women´ (do you call it like that? you know what i mean), just a few days ago, making sexism a topic in almost every western countries for a few days…now this. kind of helps to get attention, just in time for the release of the game. hmmmmmm…..

Play chains of Olympus. He smashes the Persian kings face, then has a sex mini-game with “his women”.
Sessler is really a 9 year old facing mid-life crisis. Looks like he needed an excuse for a poor score as he couldn’t even finish the game by himself.
Really, he points out in games negatives- “One trophy is named XYZ.” That is a ridiculous negative, and that is for something that doesn’t affect gameplay, story, graphics, music, lasting appeal, anything.

Even more funny is how some ignorant “knights in armor” jumped on the topic even when they don’t even know the context.
    Internet just loves controversies…

the “creative people behind the product” changed it because they realised they made a mistake. it´s totally legit and it is their choice. not yours. not mine. noone is removing your freedom in this case. not even close. all i am saying is that i think it´s cool that they thought about it twice, realised it might have been a bad idea and removed it. i think that´s a good thing, i think it´s always good to stand up for your mistakes and it´s always a good thing to stand up against sexist bs everywhere. you think it´s not, but, no matter how you turn this: it´s not taking any freedom of choice away from you…that´s taking this a bit too far isn´t it?
