Wii Mini poll states that 74% of Brits think console is ‘pointless’

Thursday, 28th February 2013 10:36 GMT By Dave Cook

Wii Mini was announced for a UK release on Tuesday. An independent poll has stated that 74% of UK residents think Nintendo’s console is pointless. Ouch.

Now, a disclaimer: The poll was carried out by VoucherCodesPro who I hadn’t heard of before I got their press release. Also, they only polled 1,003 Brits, so it’s not exactly representative of the whole country.

Regardless, I have seen many gamers online question the Wii Mini’s existence since it was revealed, so there may be truth to the findings.

The poll simply asked, “Are you excited about the Wii Mini announcement?” 76% said no, while the remaining 24% said yes.

Those who said no were then asked to state their reason. They responded as follows:

1. Don’t see the point – 74%
2. No advance in graphics – 56%
3. Just rehashing an old console, not a technological advancement- 49%
4. Small size not a big enough selling point- 47%
5. Already own an original Wii – 42%

When asked ‘Would you be likely to purchase a Wii Mini once it’s released?’ participants replied:

No – 61%
Yes – 22%
Don’t know – 17%

VoucherCodesPro’s George Charles said of the results, “It seems that despite the release of the Wii U and with the recent announcement of the PS4 and the anticipated Xbox 720, Nintendo still felt the need to get in there with another release. Unfortunately for them, gamers just aren’t bothered; according to our poll at least.

“It’s an exciting time for gamers who’ve been waiting several years for the next big console release. But the Wii Mini doesn’t carry the same gravitas. With no anticipation of improved graphics and no real advance on the original console, is it the case of flogging a dead horse?”

The console is currently priced at £79.99 by Amazon and GAME.

Over to you now. What do you make of the above, and Nintendo’s announcement. Is it indeed pointless? Let us know below.

They should have released the Wii Mini at least one year earlier with a LOT more marketing behind it rather than dumping it alongside Wii U with minimal advertising and limited regions.

Though to be fair, it seems like their Canadian experiment was successful.

I’m interested. It looks pretty cool tbh. May have dropped a few more features than I would like, namely the GC compatibility being the only thing I think they should have kept. Online? Who really gives a shit? None of you really played your Wii online, yes there was the VC but again, you all pretty much complained about the prices tbh :/ so it’s really no big deal.

Am I the only one who remembers the good old days of gaming when internet connections never existed, when it was down to just you, the console and something called FUN with a few friends round all sat on the same sofa?!?

Re-live those days and stop being so pompous.

The Wii U isn’t pointless G1GA its just pointless they released it in 2012 instead of 2006. If Nintendo had 100% faith in their motion gimmick that made them gazilliions they would have put a matching CPU&GPU in the Wii that competed on the level of 360 and PS3.

Fact is they got their ass spanked by PS2 so badly they were scared shitless to compete against the PS3 and took a gamble on cheap gimmick hardware. It paid off as we all know but at the same time they dug themselves in a hole to catch up now. The Wii U is cool but I agree the Wii mini is just a waste of time and resources. Get fucking Metroid U and Zelda U out asap. Stop stalling Nintendo!

I thought perhaps they were just trying to unload the Wii mini’s in another region, but apparently they’ve sold 37,500 units in Canada so far. Go figure.

The mini IS totally pointless tho. If saving money is your concern, then a refurbished fully-featured Wii can be bought for LESS.

The Wii U isn’t pointless G1GA its just pointless they released it in 2012 instead of 2006.

wii-mini is pointless now and the wii-u will be pointless when the ps4 and x720 arrive…. and you can bet your ass on that nintendo will release a new beefed up wii-u2 in 2016.

^ Nintendo will have to release a proper next-gen console much sooner than that if current sales figures are anything to go by.

Maybe they produced too many units for Canada and decided to send the remaining units in Europe?

Polling anyone on any one website is fundamentally unsound, since it obviously only applies to the demographic of that website, which could be anyone or everyone.

It’s fine to question what Nintendo is doing, and arguably they are up shit creek in a big way, but I just think it’s a little shady to use bad science to try and make a point.

Make an editorial instead Dave, that’s honest.
