PS4 won’t support audio CDs – report

According to Kotaku‘s translation of a Japanese journalists’s tweet, Sony has said the PlayStation 4 won’t support audio CDs or super CDs. I’ve poked Sony for confirmation and will update when I get a response. Every full-size optical disc-based PlayStation console to date has supported audio CDs.

Thanks, woe.

^^ I burn my albums from itunes. Now it looks like I wouldn’t even be able to play a simple CD. Nice one Sony.

I’m buying the NextBox. ;)

You can still buy CD’s?

I think everyone should basically not pay attention to this story. It’s from Kotaku reporting from a translation of some unknown Japanese blogger. Kotaku is well known to just put things up just in order to get some clicks. On the face of it, this seems like click generating garbage since the ps3 can do this.

*GASP* How will I ever play my CD’s now?

With my PS3? Or my computer? Or my home cinema system? Or y’know my CD player! ;P

And I must say, why the hell would they remove CD functionality? It can’t be that difficult or expensive to implement. Getting a faint scent of Bullcrap here.

This story is laughable. It’s more work (and money) to get a Bluray drive to NOT play CDs than to just get the massive amount of easy access and relatively cheap Bluray drives out there.

Basically it’s complete bullshit that it won’t play CDs.

OH my gawd, IT DOESN’T DO EVERYTHNG. Outdated con…

Who cares? Who really cares? It’s a console and why should it matter. If you have CD’s i’m sure you have something that can play them.

P.S. Interesting though, is CD’s driver that costly to consoles? LOL

@10 You do realize Sony manufactures their own hardware, right? They can do whatever the fuck they want to with their drives, and if it saves them a few coins here and there, that’s up to them. And its not confirmed whether the lack of support is hardware or software based.

Regardless, if someone was sitting on the fence, and this caused them to fall back, they’re a fucking inbred moron. Oh guess what? It doesn’t support cassettes, ATRAC, vinyl, or phonograph cylinders either. Boo fucking hoo.

Ahaha. If true, & you’re trying to save a little money Sony, go ahead and remove every feature unrelated to playing PS4 games while you’re at it–they won’t be missed by me.

And what the hell is a super CD? *checks Wikipedia* Oh, must have missed those.

I bought PS3 to play CD’s.

PS4 is such a shitty machine because it won’t play CD’s. MY PC and ANY OTHER DEVICE ON THE PLANET CAN PLAY JUSTIN BIEBER SONGS THAT I LOVE. + I have a collection of Britney Spears CD’s and it is rumored that PS4 will have 7.1 DOLBY DIGITAL. AND HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LISTEN TO THEM IF IT DOESN’T SUPPORT CD’S!

This system must cost less then 50$ or i’m not even touching it.

Where is the original interview (apparently, Andrew House is the one assumed/being mentioned elsewhere as being the interviewee), and what credentials does the person who tweeted, from where this seems to have commenced, up to 5 days ago, actually have?

Reiji Asakura (as long as the account isn’t simply using that name deceptively) happens to be the author of a book entitled “Revolutionaries at Sony: The Making of the Sony Playstation and the Visionaries Who Conquered the World of Video Games”

http://kotaku.com/5986172/... Who clipped out the rest of the article? There’s 2 lines and zero exposition, or explanation!
It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that such a move could be happening due to Music Unlimited.

#25

Audio CDs are slowly but surely becoming obsolete guys. If it were game disc they were scrapping then that would be idiotic but lets be honest the majority of us download our songs now. If this report is true then SONY has realized this and decided to stop wasting whatever money it cost to implement that feature that no one will use in the coming years and put it towards better things.

I ripped and put away my CD collection years ago. Nearly 300gb of music on those discs NOT taking up space in my living room any longer. You know you can stream music to the PS3 from your PC? I’m sure they will have the same functionality in the PS4.

What! This is madness! Oh hell no my PS3′s ain’t going no where. I’m so glad I have both the original 20GB and 60GB PS3′s. This PS4 better be fucking $299 for all the shit its lacking. The only way they could make up for this is if they support MKV files now.

sorry to spam this thread, but this is just so much fun :D
in other news PS4 also doesn’t play audio cassettes, and record vinyls. and you can’t make coffee on it either..definitely a huge feature that everyone was expecting.

@32 to rip them to the HDD and build a digital collection of course. Plug up your (Android) phone and copy the music over and enjoy. I hate the radio so I use my the music on my phone via Bluetooth in the car. I love collecting CD’s and ripping them to my PS3 HDD its a little hobby of mine.

Come on guys, it not really a huge deal, I mean well yea that sucks if this it true, but you can always download your music on a flash drive and load on your PS4 right? Well that’s what I did my PS3, cause I load more music on my 32gb drive. Well just tell me what is wrong doing that, just curious?

I still get all my music on CDs or DVD-Audio if I can because there’s nothing on the market right now with better audio quality, mp3 or AAC is lossy). But I rip them in FLAC though.

I just can believe it when I read people saying “I have n albums in my phone”… It’s ok if you don’t care that it sound like shit…

I can’t watch an old VHS tape anymore and listening to music on a phone (and lossy compressed) is just like that.

Anyway, I don’t care if the story is true, but Audio CD is still important for me overall. Or maybe it’s possible to buy lossless 16/44.1 or better yet, 24/96 online? Anyone know?

For everyone with smart ass comments, CDs are still very relevant if you want higher quality audio. Far better than the crap iTunes has, with all its bullshit DRM. We don’t all just listen casually with the earbuds included with our phone/mp3 player. I don’t actively use CDs for things other than ripping them, usually. I buy, rip it, then format shift/transfer it where I need it. But until websites start popping up with larger assortments of FLAC content, CDs are still necessary.

Definitely not a deal breaker for a console, though.

#31: What do you mean with “all the shit its lacking”? We have not seen everything that the PS4 has to offer, and CDs is the first thing that is being said to not be present. That it doesnt have PS3 backward compability makes sense because of the different architecture. I’m glad that Sony doesnt do the same “mistake” of including PS3 hardware in the PS4 like the did with the PS3 (where they included PS2 hardware). That was one reason for the $499/$599 pricetag.
