Crytek: it’s “impossible” for next-gen consoles to match PCs

Monday, 18th February 2013 11:30 GMT By Dave Cook

Crytek founder Cevat Yerli has stated that it is impossible for PS4 and Xbox 720 to match the clout of gaming PCs in a new interview. He also confirmed that he is currently under NDA at both Sony and Microsoft on both of their incoming next-gen consoles.

Despite his non-disclosure agreements, Yerli told Eurogamer that these new console rigs simply can’t compete with high-spec gaming PCs.

“Without breaking NDAs that are in place,” Yerli cautioned, “realistically, from purely a price point perspective, it is impossible. It’s impossible to package $2000-3000 into a mainstream, let’s say $500 console.

“I’m not saying they are $500 consoles. They may launch a console at $2000, but the consumer pricing is usually much lower than that. So, given consumer pricing, and given the cost of production of a gamer PC and the amount of watt of power it needs, which is like a fridge, it’s impossible.”

Crytek has recently spoken out about next-gen launch titles, stating that they won’t look as good as current high-spec PC games.

This is the same Cevat Yerli that said “Crysis is IMPOSSIBLE on consoles”?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVsT4D2_VTI

It would appear so: it’s the very same Cevat ‘Impossible’ Yerli, and that’s the very same perfectly decent version of Crysis that you can now download on Xbox Live.

@8 It’s not the same version though in reality. They had to change and optimise a lot to get it to work. it’s not a verbatim build.

@9 And it’s also not impossible. We can agree that, can’t we?

@10 Yeah absolutely, it’s possible now that’s for sure. I still need to play the first Crysis, I should probably get on that.

I would argue that the console Crysis plays a hell of alot differently than the more free-form PC original.

The draw distance, the fluidity of controls just allows more crazy shit, which makes Crysis really. From what I played of console Crysis I was very much reacting to enemies when they appeared rather than setting up stupidly intricate plan and watching them go awry.

Crysis 1 is very much so an acquired taste but once is does click and you start just playing with the nanosuit rather than feeling its like any other game its pretty special. Even today.

    http://youtu.be/-y5KiJt9oxg

Nanosuit Ninja does a good job of encapsulating what makes Crysis 1 great. Shame about 2 and no interest in 3.

Gosh, to be honest. I hate these statements.

First Bungie, now Crytek. Of course it is impossible to pack a good hardware in to the mainstream device, but why you should talk about that? It pisses people a LOT.

P.S. Crysis 1 is incredible. It’s still the most impressive FPS game in this generation with the graphics that to this date no one surpassed and it was a Direct X10 game. It had the best FPS controls (console controls are shit in PS3 or 360. They used them from Crysis 2).
Best Shooting mechanics EVER. After Crysis 1 i thought that we will have only them in the future, but PS3 and 360 came… and then came that POS so called Crysis 2… blergh.

@DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough, “This is the same Cevat Yerli that said “Crysis is IMPOSSIBLE on consoles”?”

and it’s true. they used Cryengine 3.0 build to port Crysis 1 that in the end is not Crysis 1 at all. Even controls are different. Some gameplay elements with stealth was not the same for example because console version had no foliage at all. Draw distance was a big part of the gameplay. AI is completely different. On consoles it was a Retarded version of Crysis 2.

All I’m saying is that a couple of years from now, when it suits him to promote whatever his company’s next graphics-pushing console title is, I absolutely guaran-fucking-tee you, he will be saying, “Thanks to CryEngine 4 (probably), all versions, PS4, Xbox Next and PC are the same.”

Because that’s what he does. Go and look at how he promoted Crysis 2. It was exactly the same.

Either one’s better or it isn’t, but this ‘It’s Impossible!’ – ‘No, wait! They’re all the same!’ – ‘Look at what we’re achieving on consoles with CryBaby 5!’ shit is getting old already.

a question to you Cevat Yerli…

why did crysis2 suck so much on the pc when compared to crysis1???…
why dont you use the full power of the pc for your games??

is it because it cost to much??, and you dont bother with it. because 99% of the buyers of your games is on consoles anyway… and what bungie claimed that “nobody” uses a keyboard and mouse any more is really true.

so why come here with this idiotic “impossible” claim then you moron…

That was expected. But even if the new consoles are equivalent to current mid-range PCs, they would still be a lot better than the current ones.

  24. MadFingerz

Lol, what he’s not saying is that consoles offer a good price/quality ratio that some PCs can’t match, especially when you take into consideration services such as PS+ with the instant game collection and what not. And who cares if you can’t get the most pretty games on consoles? That’s not what gaming is about, at least not for me.

btw, Crysis might be good when it comes to textures and all but artistically it looks boring as hell. I would prefer playing games like Journey which look unique rather than looking at high res foliage…

@24, Games on the PC are cheaper and your POS+ is shit compared to Steam Sales.

    bullshit obviously for console fanboys.

Hi, my name is Cevat Yerli, I love talking crap about consoles. Then Sony and Microsoft pay me, and i talk good about consoles. Else I make the boring game with nice graphics. And what game need except graphics?

What is the use of having a very high end PC, and can’t play a game like God of War on it, most of PC games are side scrolling or strategy games, I don’t need to pay 2000+$ to play those and then miss The Last of Us on the consoles. And by the way Crysis is very boring game no matter of what amazing graphics it has.
And even if next gen consoles will provide 8X of what current consoles provide + the amazing games the consoles offer, that is enough, no need to listen to this bullshit talk.

  30. Lahanas

When and if we can play the awesome exclusives of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo on the PC, then we can talk. For now, consoles are still the center of core gaming and will continue to be. And they MUST continue to be.

  31. Dragon246

Next-gen consoles will have graphics better than any equally priced pc, and thats all I want.
    500$console > 500$ pc.

  32. Demigod

To be frank he is right but who really cares? As long as we get better texture res which we will I dont care, they will look better than they do now, a lot better in a couple of years when they learn more tricks on a fixed hardware base.(by which time pc will look even better I know)

So we will get better looking games not quite as good as pc. Fine. As long as they make games that are compelling and/or fun that is all that really matters to me.

Oh and didn’t we get these arguments last time?

(just for disclosures sake the last console I bought was a ps2 so I’m not really biased one way or another)

    It’s about games, stupid.
It’s not important what a system COULD run, it’s important what’s actually made for it.
I mean, look at GoW3 on PS3. Looks… Well, better than a lot of stuff on PC, minus 720p resolution. Could PC show much better graphics? Yes. But will somebody spend time and money making it?
See, consoles are what games are made for. To the point where actual power does not matter. Remember PC port of RE4? It looked good on PS2, and looked way worse on PC.
Also, is it just me or Crysis series is boring shit? I remember part 1 the “run from bush to bush stealth-ed for 8 hours” game and this scripted nonsense that was second game. It doesn’t really matter how it looks if it’s boring crap, honestly.
Games are similar to food, you see, as in it should be edible and tasty = enjoyable. It helps if it looks good, but if it looks good yet taste like dog poop, well, who cares about looks.

Oh for pete’s sake….This is what causes little PC gamers to puff out their chest and start ripping on consoles. It’s dumb. This Cevat Yerli or whatever, shouldn’t be promoting the spec wars when he’ll have the 3rd iteration of Crysis is running on 6+7+ year old hardware, and to prematurely state what the next Playstation/Xbox can and cannot do, is just piss-poor leadership and shows no true decency.

Maybe he’s got a stick up his arse from hearing Epic basically saying that his engine is pretty but crap…

crack up mate shows u dont really no what your talking about crysis 1 is still to this day very demanding in full settings high res etc fact 1 is they remade the whole crytek engine two work with consoles ie for crysis 2 then they went back to crysis 1 and remade the whole game because crysis could not run on a console full stop the way the game was made ment it was impossible so the game u play may look the same but it is not the same game engine as crysis 1 plus crysis 1 and 2 both look like 2004 games on the console ps3 being the worse i cant wait for the new consoles i wont be buying it but i hope they hurry up because it has more power than the last consoles and updated hardware so fingers crossed pc games wont be burdened for a year at least buy poor graphics and architecture the ps3 and xbox 360 has left us with thanks all. oh just another note crysis 1 and two and 3 both look really bad on all consoles. pc version settings would be low if u wanted it to look like the consoles rofl no joke the point im making anyways cevat could not have known crytek would remake a whole game in the new engine that he never knew about unless he had a crystal ball witch he ant .

    Alright, let’s get started:

    1) No, the console versions of Crysis are not the same as the PC version, so no, Crysis was never faithfully brought to consoles. The textures are lower res, the draw distance is lower, foliage is greatly reduced, there are fewer trees, fewer physics objects, the lighting is completely different, the AA is non-existent, etc. It also uses CryEngine 3 instead of CryEngine 2 because CryEngine 2 doesn’t run well on consoles. Needless to say, the PC version looks and runs a whole lot better than the console versions. It also plays better, as Crytek decided to put many of their lousy Crysis 2 design choices into the console ports.

    2) PC’s don’t only offer superior image quality but also superior performance, which has a far more significant impact on gameplay. Playing a shooter at ~30 FPS feels pretty lousy when compared to 60+ FPS. Higher framerate also means more responsive controls because the code ticks more often.

    3) Good gameplay and good graphics are not mutually exclusive. You can have a game that plays well AND looks good. Shocking, I know. In the case of multiplatform titles (which comprise the bulk of games these days), PC gets the best of both worlds.

    4) The number of console-exclusives is decreasing to the rise in development and marketing costs. It simply isn’t practical to make a AAA game for only one platform unless the platform-owner is funding it. That’s why the vast majority of AAA games are multiplatform. If you play many games, chances are that the majority of those games are multiplatform, which means that the majority of the games you play are significantly better on PC.

    Thank you.

What Yerli is saying is absolute fact though regardless if he is feeding the console/PC wars or not, logistically and realistically if the consoles are going to be around a £500 price point then they will have £500 worth of hardware (or less) in them, and that in itself when compared to a £3000 high end PC rig is no contest, and really, just stating the obvious. Having said that consoles don’t have the limitations a PC does having to conform to an X86 X64 OS and various API’s and software layers, they are built for one dedicated purpose and as such can get round these limitations utilising the hardware in them in some ways better than a PC can I think this will be the case of the brand new consoles as it was when the 360 first his the market. Another thing to note because of this is that I don’t think any game out there actually uses all that horse power properly in a PC.

The old 360 and ps3 have had their day and have been using other tricks to keep up like lower screen resolutions lower fidelity textures etc lower LOD’s. So in summary when the new consoles hit the shelves they will be on par (more or less) with the best looking games on PC currently (some exclusives may even surpass in terms of graphics fidelity) but not because of hardware, but because of how the software runs and the coding tricks they use, but I have a feeling it wont be for long, as PC hardware, software and engine development always moves forward while the consoles become stagnant very quickly, it is a cycle that has happened for years, and I don’t see it changing any time soon.
