Dead Space 3 “Item Farming” glitch is not a glitch, says EA

Saturday, 9th February 2013 14:19 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

EA has said the Dead Space 3 “Item Farming” glitch is not a glitch after all, therefore it has no plans to patch it up.

According to a representative speaking with GameFront – which found the supposed exploit in the first place – the area in question in the game was “deliberately designed” to allow for farming resources used for crafting.

“The resource-earning mechanic in Dead Space 3 is not a glitch,” said EA representative Jino Talens. “We have no plans to issue a patch to change this aspect of the game. We encourage players to explore the game and discover the areas where resources respawn for free.

“We’ve deliberately designed Dead Space 3 to allow players to harvest resources by playing through the game. For those that wish to accumulate upgrades instantly, we have enabled an optional system for them to buy the resources at a minimal cost ($1-$3).”

The site posted a video earlier in the week which showed a room where players could fight respawning enemies and continue to loot material off downs foes for as long as they could stomach the tedium of such an act.

Apparently some ethical questions were raised from a few online sources, with some suggesting it was a farming exploit to get around the microtransactions EA embedded in the game.

So there you go. You are not cheating if you do this, so slap those necromorphs around in the respawning area for hours at a time if you wish.

Dead Space 3 is now available worldwide on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Ethical questions concerning resource farming? In a single player/co-op game? Not likely.

I’m not sure who’s fault this is (and in a good way). Hm. I can’t see EA fully embracing this attitude, so it’s probably them standing by Visceral. One thing I’ve noticed is that under their new management, if one of their studios is passionate about something, they stand by it. So… hm.

    This is interesting, at least.

It’s really not hard to gather resources in the game, and this method isn’t necessary at all to enjoy the game. Also the microtransactions aren’t nearly as intrusive as people must have feared, you can also buy the currency packs from ingame ”ration cards” which you get by deploying your Scavenger Bot.

The description of the glitch/exploit in this article doesn’t match how it is depicted in the linked article.

It isn’t a matter of farming infinitely respawning enemies, it’s a matter of entering and exiting the same room over and over again and a random resource always respawning in that location, right beside the door, for infinity.

When games are based around limited exp or resource availability any sort of “infinite” farming area is usually in direct conflict with game pacing and therefore are indeed glitches and these are usually patched out in order to maintain the balance of the game.

Basically this explanation doesn’t ring true to me.

There is retro mode which removes resources so your point is mute and since this is a single and co-op game and no competitive modes where these resources would give an edge over others, its pointless. Just like Silent Hill there would be cheats and exploiting to have infinite ammo. The player(s) would have to deliberately do it in order to gain “infinite” resources. So if they want to remove that aspect of hunting for resources that’s up to them.

Aside from the fact that I thought the glitch was just respawning items without conflict, I will just point out the phrase “… loot material off downs foes… ” and not touch that with any humorous comment.
    ‘Downed’ foes, one assumes.

@6, if you’re playing the default mode an infinite resource exploit as easy as this isn’t (I suspect you meant) moot.

Is there any point to the resource system at all if behaviour like this is intended as claimed?

I have been playing veteran mode and I don’t have infinite resources infact I run out quite fast with crafting health items, ammo, upgrading the RIG and upgrading the weapon. THis is someone just go in and out of the door re-spawning enemies to farm the items they drop though its not like you can build whatever you want with the crap that drops its typically med, ammo and scrap metal. which you only have so much space to hold items which you can’t increase. SO to do this you would need to find a spot where there is a bench nearby and where enemies respawn to take advantage of this infinite exploit.

There are quite a few spots where things respawn actually, if you’re of a mind to use it.
