PS All-Stars studio SuperBot hit with a round of lay-offs

Sony has confirmed to various sources that lay-offs have occurred at PlayStation All-Stars studio SuperBot Entertainment.

The news was broken overnight on Twitter via Mike Birkhead, a designer at Insomniac. He later tweeted that the number affected was “around 20.”

Sony later confirmed the news by issuing the following statement to various outlets:

“SCEA can confirm that SuperBot Entertainment did make a reduction in their workforce today. The studio and SCEA remain committed to supporting PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale post launch, including developing the title’s forthcoming DLC releases in the coming months.”

Information on whether those hit by lay-offs were temporary or contract employees is unknown.

    Pretty normal course of action tho isn’t it? Alot of studios reduce staff counts after a project launches. I don’t think it should be read into too much. I don’t think it is any indication at all about the game selling or not.

    Not surprising, considering the sales of Playstation All-Stars and the general reception to the roster. Too many characters thrown in there just to promote something (DINO, especially), a very barebones single player mode in what should be a game all about the fan service, and a gameplay style that doesn’t fit the Playstation brand. I’ve said from the moment this was announced that this should have been a more traditional fighter, instead of ripping off Smash Brothers. It might have sold a lot more if they had done it in the style of Injustice/the Mortal Kombat reboot and if they had focused on brands and characters that the fans actually wanted.

    A Big Daddy is not what people think of when they think “Playstation,” even if Bioshock is out on PS3. So many things wrong with this game.

    Still, it’s sad to see anybody lose their jobs.

    I wouldn’t say theres anything wrong with characters like big daddy. When you think Solid Snake and Sonic you don’t think of Nintendo. But, people are very excepting of those characters in SSB.

    I have been playinh with Big Daddy for the last several months and he’s great on there. A giant target but a great character. Im at rank 935 with him now and have learn some pretty great things with him.

    I think the lay offs are more because the development is haulting and doesn’t need as large a team as it has. Right now they are probably working on a few more characters and then a few boards. Full team not required for that.

    I’m sure when they start PAS2 a lot of them will be re-hired

    Solid Snake was just humerous for people to see in Smash Brothers, especially sneaking round in the box, that did actually fit quite well.

    Sonic was of course a fine addition, it was iconic that Sonic and Mario were in the same game and could actually fight each other. Considering the huge initial rivalry between the games, it made sense.

    A lot of the players in PAS were just filler. Bioshock was almost a 360 exlusive, it only came out on PS3 a long time after AND it recieved a poor port. How the hell does that make you think of the Playstation brand?

    Same with Dante to a degree although at least he was on PS consoles first. Although I would say his inclusion was just advertising for DmC.

    Sweet tooth? How many people actually know that guy?

    Game just looks like a horrible cheap knock off. If it plays like a dream but looks like a shitty knock off, whats the point?

    Loads of great fighting games out there. Don’t say theres not many mascot games on PS, because half the time, Sony fans kept saying this plays nothing like SSB in a bid to try and make it not sound like a copy.

    The whole look of the game put a lot of people off, then Sony’s shitty marketting put the nail in the coffin of this abomination.

    You can’t justify the presence of 2 abstract characters in one game and then call foul of ONE abstract presence on another.

    That’s called contradictions. Snake wasn’t made a Star thanks to Nintendo so does that mean he shouldn’t have been there? No. Anyone can be in a crossover game if a designer so chooses.

    Who cares if YOU don’t know who sweet tooth is. Plenty of others know and love the character. Being offended by his presence should send you in a coma seeing ROB since 90% of people had no idea why he was added till they googled him.

    You are knocking a game that you never played again but going off of cosmetics? Really? Aren’t you the gameplay over presentation guy boasting the amazingly rich gameplay of nintendo games makes their presentation null?

    Everytime you open your mouth about Sony you completely contradict yourself.

    The only thing that is cheap on PAS is the story mode everything else is solid as hell.

    Also, loads of great fighting games why not have another? Oh yeah…. I forget it’s you and your typical Sony Bias. If Sony tries to enter a market their obviously greedy dogs.

    Dude, it’s simple the lay offs are probably due to how most all lay-offs this gen occurred behind. The games finished in development, no need for all the people.

    Not because the games is “Shit” or an “Abomination” those are just obvious bias. Your hate for Sony blinds you from ever giving concrete feedback especially when it’s a direct challenge to Nintendo. Oh God you can’t handle that.

    There is nothing wrong with the game. It doesn’t have to feature Playstation only characters and whether a thirdparty character belongs in such a game seem to me be entirely based on individual preferences.

    The big problem with this launch was the timing: new ip in the middle of the holiday period, and without advertising? Absolutely hopeless.

    Regarding the layoffs; that would have happened even if the game was a success.

    My enjoyment of the game isn’t “hampered” at all. It is however irritating to see you go about blowing down on Sony games and Praising Nintendo games as if your paid to do so.

    Also, Sony has more then enough “originality” to give cracks at other ideas. That’s like being made that since the first person to paint was on cave walls everything else is un-original and uninspired because cave men did it first.

    Get over it. The world works off of inspiration of others. It is what it is LIFE

    @4 – Sweet Tooth is actually one of the characters that I think was absolutely necessary to have in the game, considering how big a part of the PS1 days Twisted Metal was and how big a title Twisted Metal: Black was for PS2.

    As for Dante, old school Dante is absolutely associated with the Playstation. DINO is not. DINO is just advertising for what was, at the time, an upcoming game.

    Well to be fair Dante is Dante. Regardless what the original Devil May Cry fans associate it with. It is Capcom’s character not ours, and they probably wanted Dante to be that Dante if he were to make it in the game.

    Nobodies fault there beside…. he’s a pretty badass character on there boosting some of the highest ap gain in the game

    Especially considering Sony seem to literally wait for Nintendo to make something popular then bastardise it.

    I won’t do the list again, but anyone who’s been gaming in the last 10 years atall will be ale to see the thread running through Sony’s ‘new’ ideas…

    Try asking the guy who made Day Z what he thinks about War Z for example.

    I’m not saying Smash Brothers is unique and completly original, but if your going to do this style of game and pull it off, it has to have some charm.

    Sega was first with the genre in some respects with Fighters Megamix. Similar idea but that was more technical and a 1 on 1 style beat em up.

    Nintendo’s multiplayer focused N64 outing really brought the idea home.

    The N64 was one of the first main steam consoles to include 4 control pad ports as standerd. In that respect, the N64 put a huuuuugefocus on 4 player gaming, another reason this game was so successful and fun.

    Coupled with their history, the combination worked.

    I will never see this as anything other than a quick cash grab on Sony’s behalf. Fucking hell, even Sony themselves sent it out to die, shows you what they thought of their own awesome heritage.

    And you wonder why I think there a shitty company?

    Over the more violent characters. There are too many violent characters in this which I think upsets the style of game.

    It’s like putting a Gears of War character in Mario Kart, just looks stupid IMO…

    It doesn’t matter who made a for controller game because if that was the case Nintendo ripped off arcade cabinets. Again, who cares? Everything you say is an extremist view on a scenario as if it were factual.

    There doesn’t need to be “style” or “charm” to a game. Want to know why? because as gamers we develop that view of charm. It’s all inter-personal, and a huge nostalgia punt.

    So when did Sony Bastardize Nintendo with Infamous? Resistance? Kill Zone? God of War? Legend of dragoon? Uncharted? Last of Us? Fat Princess? Where is the bastardization there?

    And, when did DK,Bowser,Mario, Samus, Falco all turn into innocent creatures? You don’t think a constant thirst to kidnap and cause havok in a kingdom is violent? You don’t think flying through space destroying other jets in the cold recesses of space is violent? You don’t think wiping out a race of creatures is violent? How about running through a board riding a rhino thrusting it’s horn into every living creature in your path?

    These aren’t to violent of characters to you? Why because their cartoon-y?

    It’s almost as if you can’t just let this game be a game.

    Your really grabbing at straws with the arcade thing, what are you going to do next? Break it down so much our going to say Nintendo copied ‘buttons’ because of TV remotes.

    Copying in gaming is much more easy to trace and credit should be given to the company or dev who can make something work and become popular. Sony quite obviously ape Nintendos products, control devices, games to a large degree.

    MS does too, but they have there own media focus. Sony just seem to cobble together shit based on what’s ‘hot’ at the moment.

    Nintendo characters aren’t violent, you can’t really compare Donkey Kong with Kratos ripping someone’s head off can you?

    I don’t know why your insinuating they are, you sound like a crazy preacher trying to make out Harry Potter is evil and performs witchcraft.

    A lot of the Sony games you mention have almost zero longevity, that’s why I have a problem with people championing a lot of Sony’s exclusives.

    To me, they are throwaway at best. Once I finished Killzone 3, Uncharted etc… I would never go back to it. Shallow, shallow experiences. Fun, but hardly timeless, basically a good example of graphics over gameplay. Or hamburger experience if you will.

    Games that define PS3 for me were:

    Demon Souls
    Ni No Kuni
    Heavy Rain
    Yakuza Series

    PS1 had a huuuuge amount of classics, mainly because it afford something that the other machines couldn’t. PS2 was a great console, PS3 was bloated and expensive and brought nothing to the table.

    I have a PS3 and Wii U, mainly for exclusives. That will be the same next gen as well.

    Just for the record, I game mainly on Xbox.

    I have never made a single game to sound out evil. YOU are the only person who cast out verdicts like your trying to convince the masses. Check your self before you try and make someone else out to be crazy.

    The point was that just because they don’t show blood doesn’t mean they aren’t violent. A Dora the explorer game is a non-violent game. A game were you are killing anything is violent. Objective A Jump on these turtle heads and if you don’t they kill you. That’s called Violence doesn’t matter if it looks colorful with no blood.

    I also don’t have to draw straws when it comes to gaming because it’s all relevant to one’s personal taste at the end of the day. But, to act like Nintendo is the Sole originality of the gaming industry that’s just comedy.

    Just because you can’t go back and play a game over again doesn’t mean that’s not applicable to others. You don’t play the Co-op to UC? How about the multiplayer modes? Oh wait is it possible that you can play multiplayer on sony device and have fun? Must be impossible by your standards since YOU can’t enjoy the games past the first time.

    I know plenty of people who can, even if I or you can’t.

    Also, you can’t measure the success off of PAS based on laying people off. That happens ALL the time in gaming to VERY successful developers. And if Sony weren’t Advertising the game why in the world would they keep updates on character releases and maps going? Why is there a announcement for PAS set for March? It’s not Sony’s fault you can’t open your eyes to look into something you know nothing about.

    It also isn’t Sony’s fault you don’t want to know. And, Just because you “game mainly on Xbox” doesn’t change your bias attitude. It’s posted all over the site.

    The game itself was not what it should have been and was in a genre that it shouldn’t have been. But it’s ridiculous that this has become a “Sony sucks” topic, out of nowhere.

    It’s Stephs article not mine. I’m not privy to the info of people getting layed off after finishing a gaming job, now I know it’s common practice.

    She writes for a gaming website, are you suggesting she add that information into the article so as not to make this news seem bad?

    From my perspective, the game looked cheap from the beginning.

    I think it undersold, I think it was released next to COD which even a child would know is business suicide if you want a new title and new unproven ip to work.

    Considering it had cross platform play, I think the figures have been pretty average.

    Even dragon commented on the bad marketing Lex, not just me. Someone like you was always going to buy this, maybe it didn’t reach new fans?

    Either way, in business and gaming these days, that is called a failiure.

    Not Super bots fault, but Sony’s. this was supposed to be some kind of history and Sony tribute and Sony themselves haven’t really bothered with it.

    It was already controversial (even Smash Bros dev tweeted about its similarity) and many people mentioned that.

    After all this, I see an article talking about the devs losing jobs after the project has finished. What am I supposed to think?!

    Now I have this new awesome insight into gaming jobs I may know better thank you.

    These comments are criticism where it’s due IMO, I can do the same for any dev or company.

    Someone like me originally wasn’t going to buy the game at all. So to say someone like me would have bought it regardless is a shallow accusation. I originally didn’t care for it at all. But, I told myself I would try it when the beta/demo hit. And, after giving it a try I actually started to come around.

    Why did I not what to buy it originally? Because, I was sick of the game type and I too thought it was going to be like SSB. However, I held my reservations on what I would accuse it of until I played it. I played it and looked to see if it was like SSB. I came to the conclusion it wasn’t.

    How could I come to such a conclusion? Because I played every smash but mainly SSBM competitively. I know everything about smash 1 to brawl. Brawl was the worse one for competitive play. And was indeed an un-balanced game. It was so bad Meta-knight was banned from tourneys because he ruled the entire game. There was no beating a meta-knight without a meta-knight.

    As for the marketing? They actually did good. They had good commercials all over youtube. As well, as in the FGC where MOST of it’s flack was gained from over on SRK thanks to Seth and Kendal. The marketing was ace for what they were going for. Unfortunately, Who could have guessed shallow criticisms from the gaming community as well as FGC would ultimately make it hard for Superbot to prove themselves?

    The game is great as a party fighter and even in Tourneys. It’s closed minded people that can’t have fun with a game for being a game that’s ruined any huge reception. So many people saying “This isn’t smash so it’s garbage” “This is a cheap cash in” both of which are garbage excuses to undermine something.

    Your “Sony didn’t do enough!” rants a shallow considering the odds of it all. The only people who really didn’t do enough is the gaming community that’s the only people who failed on this one.

    As for SSBB being un balanced, it’s a fun multiplayer game. God damn, why would the average joe give a flying fuck?

    Maybe your an expert at fighting games, maybe some people just want to have some fun with a few friends and some beers?

    If you want to get on your high horse with the ‘gaming community’, there are dozens of quality games that don’t sell that are more worthy of your time.

    I’m just playing Binary Domain for example, it’s great, a new ip and sold like shit.

    PS Allstars problems were identified by the gaming community from the off. Even if the gameplay is solid, a lot of people didn’t want to chip away at the layer of cheap shit on top to get to it.

    PS characters just don’t have the same connection with people that Nintendo’s do. That’s just a fact, it was a misguided project from the start.

    Superbot sounds like they did well given the crappy concept and source material.

    It’s exactly the same reason their isn’t a better cart game than Mario Kart.

    LB Kart? Why even bother shoe horsing a good franchise into a fucking Kart game just to try and get a slice of Nintendo pie?! Always the same, and always fails…

    See the problem with everything you just said at the end isn’t a fault any company can fix. You said there’s no connection with people like it is with Nintendo? That’s a subjective thing to state at any rate. People are indeed connected to Sony as well as MS and nintendo. If they weren’t the competition would have been folded.

    Just because most of our childhoods circle around Nintendo doesn’t mean there aren’t others who can identify with them. The older aspect of the gaming community are so wrapped in Nostalgia they can’t see a damn thing.

    Another thing is with PAS it is a solid game not only in FGC but for a party as well. I only brought the FGC up because that was a part of Superbot and Sonys campaign.

    As for the semantics of the karting games and the apparently “exclusive pie” they hold. Why wouldn’t they try and create a fanchise for their dedicated gamers? Why wouldn’t they try an make their system a one stop shop for the people who desire it? Why is it you are so happy with Nintendo owning a complete pie and not sharing with anyone else? Do you not see how greedy that is?

    As much as you claim Sony is a greedy company for trying to supply and demand. Nintendo would be the greedy ones to blockbuster an entire genre JUST because their fans cry it’s not only on one means of distribution.

    The only thing that’s misguided is your self perceived entitlement.

    At the end of the day these games are indeed selling. And, just because they don’t do millions on launch doesn’t mean they will flounder in abyss as you would like it to.

    I bought it.

    Its shit and no where near the same level as Melee.

    Both are worse than Power Stone 2. The only character in the entire Sony Smash roster I feel warmth towards is Sir Dan.

    See, I totally disagree that Playstation characters don’t connect with people. I would much rather play a game with Kratos and Nathan Drake than Mario and Bowser. The problem is that there are a ton of great characters that were completely ignored for this game, in favor of giving plugs to games that weren’t even out yet. DINO just doesn’t represent Playstation. Old school Dante did and is in every other crossover known to man except that one. Raiden…I guess he can almost get a pass because that version of the character debuted in MGS4, which was a PS3 exclusive, but Big Daddy? Doesn’t belong.

    And yet, there’s characters like Chloe and Elena, Dollface, Preacher, Kuo, Nix, Ares, Athena, Kai, Dart, Ico, Wander,and that’s before even getting to third party characters who were ignored like Goro Majima, Abe, Laharl, Cloud, Lightning, Sephiroth, Jin, Selvaria, who were all exclusive to Playstation systems, that could have been included in the game.

    It has nothing to do with the brand itself. The brand is strong and has some of the best first party characters ever. But to put in someone like the guy from Starhawk instead of someone from Legend of Dragoon is bullshit. Same with putting in two versions of Cole, but not including more than one character from any other franchise. Hell, sticking in a Heavy Rain character or two would have even been funny.

    But the format was bad. There’s no reason for it to be a Smash Brothers-style game when the PS3 audience tends to be older than Nintendo’s audience, and there’s no reason to make it a “Hey, we’re putting in characters we want to advertise” game.

    This is their first outting on this game. Was everyone mad the first smash didn’t have kid icarus, falco, wolff, R.O.B, or trainer red? No! It didn’t matter so why does it matter here? If and when they get a part 2 they can add more signature characters. But before hand they have to make established ground just like everyone else did.

    As for the format, there’s no real reason it had to be a 1 vs 1 fighter either. And, regardless what the age range of most people who purchase a device a company has to make games that can bring in all ages.

    Do you guys not remember the bareness of Smash Bros when it first released? The only way a game like this can get better is if the people that want better buy it. And with the entry price at 40 with both PS3 and Vita versions what is there to really complain about?

    Superbot did a great job and for that I gave them my money. And, I hope that when they make a part 2 it mainly find some creativity for the single player instead of being a giant tutorial for game modes. It really showed that the primary people developing it were indeed from the fighting game community and not just artist.

    Next team just add some good creative designers and the game will be damn near perfection. It’s a given the second game will have even more characters

    That the only non-modern character in PSABR’s roster was Sir Dan is really telling.

    You don’t seem to remember how many people slagged off Mario Kart on the SNES & Smash Brothers on N64 when they were first announced.

    People thought they were stupid ideas for Nintendo fan boys (you can kind of see the same hatred geared towards Wii U), yet once again Nintendo proved if you have strong core gameplay, these ideas and games can hold their heads high with the best of them.

    So again, it boils down to risk. Nintendo had the brass balls to do it first and put a ‘ring’ on it, Sony or MS if you want to include them, did not.

    Nintendo effectively did the leg work and spawned the genres, of course other people may follow. Will I judge those copies in the same way? Hell no! Same as Spyro and Crash were shit Mario clones…

    Remember, this is historically true. Even with Sonic and Alex Kid as Sega’s answer to Mario.

    Sonic R Racing as the answer to Mario Kart.

    Dual Shock to combat n64 Pad.

    Monster Rancher and Digimon to combat Pokemon.

    Extreme G and Wipeout to combat F Zero…

    Stop trying to rewrite history, it’s there for everyone to see.

    For the record, if MS tried to do the same thing I’d still say it was shit.

    Fat Princess was a big game on PS3 at launch and could even be said that it helped psn get some credibility on their digital offerings. So to Sony she is an all star (a pretty boss star at that in the game).

    You keep proving your opinion has no value. A game is merely shit because you liked company X’s interpretation over company Y’s? You may have that linear perspective.

    Also, one thing I don’t think people remember is Smash was a giant 1st party advertisement for N64. Ness had Mother 3 in the works. Captain Falcon had F-Zero X. Mario had mario 64, Link…Ocarina of Time, Yoshi… Yoshi Story, Fox…. Star Fox, Dk…. Donkey Kong 64, The ONLY character that didn’t have a new game was Samus.

    So what’s the problem again? Oh yeah, it’s because of Sony doing it.

    You say no heritage is there yet all of the characters on their represent a successful franchise either started on a Sony device or on it. The only exception is Big Daddy which is a good exception anyways.

    Another thing you also seem to forget Sony exists because of Nintendo. The amazing Snes? Basically created the Playstation. Dual Shock wasn’t made because of N64 it was made simply because of familiarity. choosing not to force a specific demographic to have to learn a new controlle format.

    And if you think Digimon existed only because of pokemon your wrong. Digimon was just apart of the tamagotchi line that evolved because of the monster craze the world was experiencing.

    Monster Rancher of course came in because of demand of the popular genre.

    So for your trying to re-write history comment. Maybe you should actually look at the history of companies BESIDES Nintendo.

    Your logic is pretty much nothing can be good because Nintendo is the only one that can do good. That just further proves my longing standing point that if Nintendo were to mass produce their own branded shit people like you would buy it and say that shit never been so good until now.

    I have never said Nintendo created life on earth itself. What it does do well is take an existing style, noticing its possibilities and finely tuning those to create a superior product.

    Also, on top of that it did create new and finely tuned IP’s…

    The gameplay it manages to extract from things that other companies don’t bother with are commendable.

    Ultimately, if you don’t want to acknowledge that, it’s your problem.

    If you think games like Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, god of War truely get into your Desert Island games list, that’s fine by me.

    If you really are that bitter you can’t except the rich gaming history Nintendo has created then, thats your short sighted problem.

    Your never going to be able to see past your Dualshock.

    As strong as the Playstation lineup is, Fat Princess is hardly an “All Star.” I could get her being put in as part of the roster, simply because it was such a sausage fest, but really, she is not part of any sort of franchise and the Fat Princess game was quickly forgotten. I actually have less problem with Radec being in the game than her, since, at least, Killzone is franchise that has lasted for two gens.

    As for why I think it should be a 1 on 1 fighter, it’s because the games that people associate with Nintendo tend to be more family based, so if you’re going to do a crossover fighter, you want it to be as accessible as possible. You want it to be something that even an 8 year old can pick up and have fun with.

    Sony franchises on the other hand, tend to be more adult-orientated. God of War, Twisted Metal, Uncharted. They’re aiming at teens-to-adults. Plus, the PS3 is the console of choice for a very large portion of the fighting game community. So, when you’re doing a Playstation crossover fighter, you have to realize that most of the characters people are going to associate it with are not the Jak and Daxters or the Ratchet & Clanks but the Coles and Kratoses. So, it should be something aimed at teens-to-adults. While I prefer Street Fighter, myself, I think the mechanics and art style of something like Injustice would be absolutely perfect for a Playstation crossover fighter.

    Styling it after Smash Brothers already loses a big portion of the fighting game community who don’t consider that a “real” fighting game. Besides the problems with the roster, going with the Smash style stacked a whole lot of cards against the game. You had the people who don’t consider Smash a serious game, who didn’t want to play it. You had the people who are big Smash fans, saying Sony ripped off Nintendo. It was just a bad scene all around.

    1 on 1 but maybe combat styled in a Mortal Kombat reboot kind of way rather than the floaty Virtual Fighter.

    Then they would have bypassed the obvious similarities.

    @35 I never got into Fat Princess. I do however remember there being a big fuss over it when I first got my PS3. I don’t think short changing her relevance to the Company makes the characters quality any less appealing.

    I know from my nieces and nephews that picked it up had no problem enjoying the game. They never came up screaming like the community does over style or character design. They just play it and enjoy it.

    I think there needs to be more games like this in the FGC. Things that have not only solo play but team plays. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and SF x T are other good examples. But, I don’t think it always has to be on that restricted platform and style.

    The FGC also has to get over their dis-taste for Smash. Melee had extremely broken mechanics but the intensity of melee was grade A. I just think if it was for the meta game being based around a glitch they would’ve excepted it more. And, brawl was just to random a format.

    Originally it was fun until the dash up cancel was found. Then began the horrendous tier situation.

    In the end this is the route Sony chose to take. And, they are more then likely going to continue down this route with sequels.

    And if they do I only hope they refine that story mode and not use same format and add more characters

    Well the physical sales were around 500k for vita and ps3 sales combined on the chartz and that doesn’t even count for digital sales, costumes, etc.

    And granted I know of several fighters that got sequels doing less then a million I think its success is adequate. gravity Rush is already getting a sequel and it’s sales weren’t in the millions at all

    I agree with your points, but I think its the case of putting eggs in different baskets. PSASBR is a success. 500k+ in physical + digital, I can see this reaching a million in a few months, not bad for a fighting game, that too a new one. TT2 I think has 800k sales, and its a success.
    It has crossed DOA 5, which was also a success.
    This is absolutely not bad. Its just Sony ensuring every crowd has something to play on their systems.

    Sony franchises ‘re definetely more adult oriented: a watered down Tomb Raider clone featuring an obnoxious attempt at Indiana Jones, GoW with the sex mini games, Twisted Metal which is obviously aimed at even more intelligent people than Carmageddon. The list goes on.

    This is an excellent result for this stellar SONY® product. Based on factual evidence from the trustworthy vgchartz it’s obviously far and beyond any of the other brawlers sales.

    500k split between 2 platforms? I thought it was cross buy? Is that 500k actual cash purchases?

    Cross buy is both a blessing to consumer but surely it plays havoc from a business perspective when you are trying to find concrete figures of actual sales?

    I can’t imagine Nintendo doing cross buy for Smash Brothers Wii U and 3DS. Maybe greedy but at least it seperates them from the mobile phone business model and obviously maximises profit which is all share holders care about at the moment.

    Vita now has cross buy across alot of games AND PS Plus where users can get numerous free titles and the console is still doing badly?

    I really don’t know what else Sony can do to attract people to the machine bar a huge price cut, by then you may devalue the product.

    It’s a premium product compared to the 3DS, very ironic that the 3DS still manages to sell it’s games and services at a premium.

    Again, not great for consumers but it’s a shareholders wet dream.

    I have a feeling cross buy is somewhat of a double edged sword, on one hand helping out consumers, but because it puts the onus on the developer to implement a feature that will potentially cut into their profits, I don’t see it as being an attractive business model for them atall, especially as Vita games cost a shit load more to develop for…

    Even for a new ip? I really don’t see why it should be bad. You don’t need millions for making a profit, especially if its not made by team to 100+. Even Sony said the sales were on target. Also, don’t forget the digital sales aren’t included, which are sizeable for vita games.
    Unlike ninty, you wont get ripped off to buy 1 game for 2 times, so its awesome. Its good that Sony atleast cares for its biggest customers by offering them one version for free, unlike ninty which even launches 2 versions of games at once (like pokemon) just to bloat the sales figure.

    Don’t get me wrong of course, it’s just my opinion and the sales are absolutely not that great compared to my, no our beloved juggernauts like MGS (obv 10 + million) and Uncharted (obv 20 + million combined with all the costumes, videos and themes).

    But then it’s a genre pioneer and poorly advertised one. Surely you have to be green to the bone to not figure out that games like Halo don’t really sell because they have that much replay value, playlists or the best map creator available? Of course not.

    Even Kevin Butler said the sales are according to the Tokyo geniuses plan!

    I trust SONY®. And I trust the mighty Kaz. After all Kaz said PS3 was on track to sell as much as PS2, and it already is far beyond respective 2005 figures of it’s predecessor.

    My advice? Ignore the barking haters. The game is amazing and it will probably outsell Nintendo’s clone rushed to the market to prevent PSAS from being a true pioneer!

    @45 – While crossbuy is a good idea, if you buy the PS3 version and get the Vita version for free, I don’t count that as two sales.

    And it’s not really a new ip. It’s not like Sony introduced a whole bunch of new characters in new fighting game. It’s a crossover party fighter, filled with characters who have sold millions in their own games. For it to have not sold, at least, one million cannot be a positive sign.

    But then, I don’t know anyone who bought it, myself included. It just didn’t offer what a game like that should have. And I know some people said to wait for the sequel, but I’m not sure there will be one with the general reception this received.
