Onimusha: Ninja Theory debunks next-gen reboot rumours

Monday, 3rd December 2012 11:25 GMT By Dave Cook

Onimusha chatter has been given the bolt gun treatment by Ninja Theory. The studio has denied that it is working on a reboot of Capcom’s sword-slinging series.

It follows claims that a Western third-party studio was working on a return to the Onimusha series. Lost Planet 3 developer Spark Unlimited was in the frame first, and when that turned out to be untrue, rumours of a next-gen project by Ninja Theory began.

The studio has taken to Twitter to put the rumours to bed, along with the message, “We are not working on an Onimusha game. Any rumours surrounding this are untrue.”

Bam. But that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen. The series has been gone for a while, and it’s not like Capcom to leave its franchises to quietly die. Even the long-missing Mega Man has been promised a reprisal at some point.

What would you like to see from a new Onimusha game – should it happen? Let us know below.

Thanks OXM.

Actually this is bad news. Ninja Theory is a great dev and they’ve proven that they can work with material from another series with the seriously promising DMC.
Stop the hate and enjoy the awesomeness that is Dante’s reboot after the horrible DMC4.

    We dodged a bullet there.

Ninja Theory haven’t produced a worthwhile game yet, IMO.

    Onimusha deserves a decent developer.

Having played the DmC demo several times, I think it’s only fair to say now that Ninja Theory have done that franchise justice. I would hand them Onimusha in a heart beat and to top it off, I’ll hand them Resident Evil too because clearly that’s been going down hill since RE4.

I liked the first three games so they’re welcome to release another game like that if they want to. Just nothing like the fourth game, please. I wasn’t even very critical when it released, but even then I thought it was a bad game. Enemies would take forever to die, and the same with bosses. Plus the combat system left much to be desired.

For some reason I don’t expect Ninja Theory to do it since they already did DMC. I mean, I’m sure they don’t want to become the dev to save all of Capcom’s franchises. Although for Onimusha they need some new direction; either another dev or some guys at Capcom that remembers what made Onimusha great.

Well i did like all Ninja theory games, and i think the new devil may cry will be another good package done by this developer, therefore i would not mind them taking over onimusha, besides them i can only think of platinum, i dont mind which one of them do it, i just hope is one of those two, besides them, i cannot think of another worthy candidate.

I guess we played different demos because DmC was a slow boring mess.

@7 – And we can see why it’s good for Capcom that you aren’t in charge of them.

I’ve only played about ten minutes of the first Onimusha game, before the tank controls annoyed me too much, but I can’t imagine Ninja Theory would be able to do anything worthwhile with this series. The theme alone tells me Western developers shouldn’t be anywhere near it.

I do think the series probably could use a reboot, though, after the reception of part 4 and the legal inability to use any of the characters from 1-3. If they are going to rework it, I can think of few better than Platinum.

In fact, thinking about it, after playing both the DmC and the Metal Gear Rising demos, it’s like Ninja Theory are the Anti-Platinum. One managed to take an existing franchise and do something very interesting and very fun with it, but keeping within the respected continuity and canon, while the other managed to dumb down something that was beloved and aimed it more towards people who never gave a fuck about it in the first place, while shitting on everything established before.

Good riddance, Onimusha was always utter shit.

It would be even worse with a developer like NT behind it.

Still not going to fuck yourself? Why not play your wannabe a military guy shooter and while you are at it, shoot yourselves in the face, or better fuck yourself with an AK47 ? I heard its better than the 360 you have in your ass right now.
    NT is a great studio.

Thank the heavens this is not true ninja theory should not be making action games it is their greatest weakness.
They need to make games based on the things they are good at.

They are good at screen tearing, QTE’s and cutscenes. It’s only actual gameplay they are shit at.

Sounds like they are angling to be a Sony first party dev!

It’s kinda amazing to see console hatred in a thread like this (from more than one person, directed at more than one system), when we should all be focusing on the real enemy:

Ninja Theory and their complete lack of being able to make anything close to resembling a decent game.

PS3? 360? Whatever. Ninja Theory has defiled them both. Why should we fight amongst ourselves when Tameem is such a better target?

It was just a gentle ribbing. You are right though, NT need to stop with the button mashers.

Problem is that is literally all they have ever made, from KFC to DMC.

Did anyone here actually play Enslaved? It was a decent game, and everyone here is acting like they are bad or something.
It gathered 82/100 on Metacritic which is not a terrible score.

    I personally liked it.

Fuck Metacritic. As for Enslaved, any game with platforming I can’t die from is not a game that should have platforming. Not to mention, the combat wa about as rudimentary as it could get.

The game had good acting, I’ll give them that, but it was a shitty game. They might have been better off just making a CGI film out of it.
