Wii Mini: original console 'isn't quite dead yet', says Pachter

Wii Mini is a very real console that is launching on December 7th, according to the Canadian arm of Best Buy. Some are sitting back in sheer bamboozlement at why Nintendo would want to release another Wii model with Wii U already out Stateside. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told VG247 that the reason is simple: it's still selling big guns.

VG247 asked Pachter for his thoughts on the console's release, and it even caught him off guard, "That is the first I've heard of it. I agree that it may have been better to bring it out when the Wii was still popular, but Nintendo might have a strategy to keep the Wii alive. They apparently sold 300,000 Wiis last week globally, so the console isn't quite dead yet."

The 300,000 figure comes from Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime who also stated that the Wii U sold 400,000 units in the same week.

As the original Wii is still selling, Nintendo's desire to release a cheaper Wii Mini SKU for cash-poor families who want in on the gaming trend a chance to do so economically. That is, if it launches at a sensible price. We're still waiting to hear about that.
