Blizzard prototyped Diablo in space, codenamed ‘Starblo’

No this isn’t a joke, Blizzard actually were conceptualising and even prototyped a version of Diablo in space, as revealed by David Craddock, author of unofficial Blizzard biography ‘Stay Awhile and Listen’. Find out what could have been below.

Seriously stop looking at your calendar, this isn’t April 1st. PCGamesN reports – by way of a Shacknews interview – that Craddock detailed Blizzard’s ‘Starblo’ prototype.

Craddock confirmed that after wrapping up Diablo 2, Blizzard split its team in half – one focused on Diablo 3, and the other to consider other projects tied to the franchise – such as a space opera RPG.

Craddock explained, “The project earned the nickname Starblo for its mix of a space setting and the action-RPG formula that made Diablo so successful. Like Diablo 2, Starblo would take place over several acts, but rather than journey across a single world, players would board their customizable spaceship and travel to new planets, killing and looting the space creatures they found there.2

“By the time Dave Brevik and the Schaefers left Blizzard North in summer 2003, the Starblo team had produced a few playable builds of the game, but still hadn’t come up with a proper name.”

Would you have played a loot and combat-heavy space RPG like ‘Starblo’? Could this have worked as a Starcraft game? Let us know below.
