Pitchford: motion controls evolving to holodecks

Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford has said current motion control technology is on the path to something he's very excited about: "holodeck" gaming.

Speaking to Joystiq, Pitchford said he would like to see gaming go down the holodeck path.

"Motion control technology that we're seeing today and we'll see as it iterates is a step towards the Holodeck vision," he said.

"It's still rudimentary. It's not great yet, but it's going to get better. But where it needs to be to do the Holodeck, we're a long ways from that."

Pitchford said that he'd prefer to continue using traditional controls where appropriate, but also seemed enthusiastic about a future where gaming narratives and design require forms of input we can't yet achieve.

"Characters need to depend on feedback that's more nuanced than something that would be better accomplished with a button press," he said.

Interestingly, elsewhere in the interview Pitchford mentioned that one of the most exciting aspects of the industry's near future is the prospect of collaboration between companies rather than format wars. Hit the link above to read more.
