’22 Cans is only going to make one game’ – Molyneux

Curiosity developer 22 Cans is only going to make one full game, studio founder Peter Molyneux has revealed to VG247. The developer considers Curiosity one of 22 experiments that will essentially fuel creation of its only full game, which is yet to be revealed.

Speaking with VG247, Molyneux explained, “The main game that we’re working on at the moment – some people at 22 Cans are working on that – some people are working on the Android version of Curiosity, and some people are working on another experiment.”

Molyneux added, “But everything that we do, every thought that we have, every moment of a day, is all working towards this full game. 22 Cans is only going to make one game and that’s it. You just release that single experience then you refine it and adapt it like – and don’t think of this in any way other than an analogy – when a TV company makes a soap opera.”

“They’re not thinking about making a sequel to that show. Instead they’re thinking of how they make this show as amazing as possible so that people watch it today, and that they will still be watching in a year’s time. I like to think of our game like that.”

“But I’m thinking about, ‘how can I make this game relevant, be interesting enough for you to come back?’, but to also make it something that feels almost like a hobby. That’s a very different thought process for someone like me than making a game, sticking it in a box, and putting it on a shelf.”

“In that instance the only thing I could do after that is a title update, DLC, or a sequel. But now, with Curiosity, I could literally here, right now, refine that experience.”

“You have to realise that, if I change one thing in this experience, then it may piss the whole world off, but if you want to be a part of this world you’ve got to get into that mindset.”

Curiosity is 22 Cans’ first experiment. It’s a game that sees players chipping away at a massive cube comprised of 60 billion smaller cubes by tapping on their iOS or Android device’s screen.

At the centre of the cube is a prize that Molyneux has called life-changing. It’s definitely not money. We have no idea what it is.

    I have Crazy Train playing in my head.

    I wish Molyneux would stop trying to make the game to end all games, and instead just try to make a game that is fundamentally good.

    And I wish he’d let those speak for themselves.

    Rab Florence put it really well I think, when he was talking about videogame heroes like say Miyamoto, who have definitely changed videogames and contributed a permanent unforgettable dramatic, and whose names are known throughout the industry.

    So essentially, his studio will make 23 games (22 ‘experiments’ and 1 full game). That’s too optimistic for a studio which has not even released one game.
