PS3: ’3 years of incredible first-party content incoming’

Monday, 24 September 2012 12:43 GMT By Dave Cook

Sony’s VP of hardware marketing John Koller has confirmed that PS3 development is ‘running hot’, and that the console will see three more years of solid first-party content.

Speaking with Gamespot, Koller talked of big game for Sony “A lot of great content is coming. Over the next 2-3 years the PS3 has got an incredible lineup.”

Koller added, “A lot of first-party content that hasn’t come out publicly. We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years and we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming.”

So, what could the undisclosed first-party gems that Koller speaks of be? Speculate to your heart’s content below.

Thanks OPM.

    In my eyes is not only games the key thing here, it is maybe a hint that their next console is not so around the corner like we believe, but iam happy with the new games announcements though, i just really curious about what this really means for their next console.
    #1 Erth dont worry at this rate they will catch up with PC too ;)

    I honestly like this plan. But, telling us this and knowing how Sony’s hardware cycles work. We can anticipate hearing about a PS4 in 2-3 years.

    Welltechnically we already have some insight into the next year or two. FF14 realm Reborn, Last of US, (POSSIBLY) FF versus 13, God Of War Ascension, and have titles now like Dust 514, PASBR, Ratchet, Sly.

    We already have a good potential run for 1-2 years I’m sure the 3rd year would be things we find out by next E3 alongside a new console release.

    @4
    This is exactly what they have been saying all along (that would take them to about the 10 year cycle). There was always a sizeable overlap with PS4 planned too – just like PS2/PS3. Nothing changed or different here – just reiterating what they said before.

    I honestly doubt FFXIV will EVER make it onto European PS3′s. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see.

    Can’t wait for The Last of Us, but not that psyched for the other games you mentioned Lex.

    I have no doubt Sony have some great stuff lined up for the next few years, I just wish he (or someone) would elaborate!!

    #7 yes but the ps2, when the ps3 did arrived, it didnt had 3 years of incredible first party games, the major first party tittles were directed to ps3, so i think this is a very different ball game here Doc, IMHO.

    @Deacon,
    “True gamers don’t give two shits about the horsepower of their machine ”

    sorry, but no. True Gamers care about it’s performance a LOT.

    @9
    We are still talking at least a year before PS4 arrives so he is talking about 1-2 years of support following that. PS3 launched in 2006, in the next two years Sony released God of War 2, a Ratchet and Clank, MLB, NBA, lots of Singstar and Buzz stuff. NB: The “incredible” is just attached to the line-up not first party in the original article. So will also include 3rd party support.

    Edit:Added R&C which I forgot.

  12. ManuOtaku

    #10 Erth “the best players in the world have the best rigs”

    That sound it more like a core and a competition, than having fun and being competitive at the same time, if i play like that, i mean to be the best player in the world, it will be like work,and probably i will find any reason to stop doing it.

    #12 3 years ago

    @10

    |True Gamers care about it’s performance a LOT.

    Nope! “True” gamers don’t care about graphics as long is the game is fun to play.

    #13 3 years ago
  14. Erthazus

    @13, say that to the world best players like Athene.

    You are just a gamer that plays casually mostly which is what 80% of gamers DO and it is not a bad thing.

    And best players wil have the best rigs because performance is a MUST.

    #14 3 years ago
  15. DrDamn

    @14
    You both have massively different ideas of what the term “true gamer” means. The argument is fairly pointless. One of you is arguing “apples are green” and the other is saying “no, bananas are yellow”.

    #15 3 years ago
  16. Deacon

    Erth, it’s a bit different if you’re making a CAREER out of it (where a few FPS might mean the difference between $0 and $20,000). Even you can see that.

    I don’t think we have any professional gamers around these parts. We just love to play games. And for those sorts of people (speaking for myself at least) I’d rather hear devs talking about new ideas, new worlds, new stories, than how many pixels their latest game can push around.

    #16 3 years ago
  17. Erthazus

    @16, I will give you a small example of myself and some gamers that plays World Of warcraft.

    Top Guilds (without any career) have their own sites and forums where you can join their guild and they always ask from you your progress, best gear, skill, battle.net char sheet and etc.

    They also ask you for a good rig because they won’t take you to their own guild if your performance will be below 30-60 frames per second in 25 raids.
    Most of the hardcore gamers in WoW require some serious Rig even if it is overkill for the game like WoW.

    for example I want to play Mists Of Pandaria and raid in it a LOT. I just bought 3770K i7 3.4 GHZ processor with 16 GB Of Ram and some serious GIGABYTE hardware not just for showoff. This all goes to WoW and maybe it will sound like an Overkill but i bought it not just for the smooth performance but for the reliability.

    Actually there is ineed no such thing as a “True Gamer”. There are Gamers, but i spoke about hardcore players.

    #17 3 years ago
  18. Deacon

    And that’s why PC gaming sucks ;) I joke…

    That’s all fair enough, but means nothing if we’re talking about consoles.

    Oh Erth!

    #18 3 years ago
  19. OlderGamer

    Erth man, most of us don’t want to or care bout the best players in the world. Most of us just want to unwind and enjoy the game in front of us.

    I don’t think it is horsepower hurting console sales. I think it is rehashing the same games over and over and over. Anual franchise release creates gamer fatigue. But I know some folks diagree with me there and that is fine.

    But I don’t blame it on power. If it was alone, high end PC gaming would dominate and it just doesn’t.

    #19 3 years ago
  20. Erthazus

    @18, “if we’re talking about consoles”

    Consoles should not be on par with PC but they should be good. They are machines and people that play consoles also require some reliability and performance.

    Isn’t it great when your game on console plays in 60 frames per second? I’m sure you are happy when your game is smooth and sharp.

    Also, I know for sure that you don’t like cheap ports or games that are not developed very well because of the outdated hardware. That’s the thing. I’m not talking about: “herp Derp, consoles should have QUAD SLI Geforce Over9000″

  21. DarkElfa

    This announcement has two purposes: to sell current stock before they announce the PS4 and to keep the PS3 fanbase from jumping ship before they launch said PS4.

    This is no more confirmation that the PS4 is three years out than the cancellation of your car’s warranty is proof that it won’t break down any more.

    i am just worried if we are gonna see more of texture popping, framerate dropping, distance bluring/smoothing from hell and half arsed ports from up to date performance systems…

    THAT IS WHAT WORRY ME, I HAVE NO INTEREST IN BUYING OR PLAYING GAMES THAT JUST CANT OR WILL NOT BE DONE PROPERLY ON THE PS3.

    #22 3 years ago
  23. ManuOtaku

    Man this reminds me the joy i have playing games in XBLA/PSN like jet set radio ( a very old game), the mark of the ninja, dust, journey, etc, they are not the top of the crop in the graphics department, but i think is due that cel shaded games tend to old better within time than realistic ones, and besides those games play great too, really thinking about this games makes me hard to understand the ultra power graphics mentality, i think theres room to everybody, and i respect that, but i dont think you need the top of the crop rig to enjoy and play games, and i dont believe a true gamer, avid , hardcore gamer, etc., whatever you want call it would think that way, becuase he/she will be missing a lot of great games, which goes against the true, avid, hardcore gamer philosophy IMHO.

  24. DrDamn

    @23
    That’s it exactly.

    #24 3 years ago
  25. ps3fanboy

    @23

    its not about the “the ultra power graphics mentality”. it is about if the game developer can and will do the game proper for a system that cant handle the up to date game titles. that is what it is all about…. and what we have seen so far of texture popping, framerate dropping, distance bluring/smoothing from hell and half arsed game ports.. IT DONT LOOK GOOD AT ALL.

    #25 3 years ago
  26. DrDamn

    @25
    “IT DONT LOOK GOOD AT ALL.”

    But how did it play? That’s the point.

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Erthazus

    @23, games like Journey and DUST are very well crafted games that required some decent programming skills and they look beautiful and sharp because PS3 and Xbox 360 have enough power to support these games in solid frames per second being at the same time smooth.

    That’s the thing. Current gen AAA titles can’t be AS sharp As indie games because AAA titles require POWER or-r-r-r you can always play Call Of duty in 60 FPS for the rest of your life that uses old 1999 year old engine.

    Gamers choice always.

    Manu, another example. If you have PS2 launch MGS3 on it and launch MGs3 on your PS3 and the difference will be huge on your telly.

    I’m currently playing Max Payne 1 on pc at full res and okay the graphics are very low quality compared to mp3 but damn the game’s still fun :D

    #28 3 years ago
  29. ps3fanboy

    @26

    you miss the point totally…. if it is a game with a lot of trouble with texture popping, framerate dropping, distance bluring/smoothing from hell and being an half arsed port. the game play dont help at all.

    you see now if you want a 32 online player game you gotta stick to resistance 2 from 2008 game engine, if you want 16 player you gotta stick to killzone3 from 2010 game engine, and if you want a good sp experience you stick to uncharted 3 from 2012… you move out of these boundaries, you know your gonna get a half arsed game experience.

    i am totally fine with games that dont look better than these games i mention. i believe these games pushed the ps3 to max and should not be tried to be expanded on.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. Erthazus

    I, for one, am happy with this news and, frankly, expected it when I decided on a PS3. I don’t want a system that is immediately obsolete when the next iteration of it comes out. I fully expect games like Last Guardian to come out in late 2013/early 2014, after the PS4 has been officially announced (which I imagine it will be at the next E3). As I said before, the best games always come in the final years of a system’s life.

    I won’t be upgrading to a PS4 until it has 20 exclusive must-have titles, anyway. In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying the PS3.

    As for what titles to expect in the future, I would imagine most of them will be new IP’s, with another Ratchet & Clank thrown in (because this is the one Sony franchise I can honestly say I feel they milk) and maybe an Uncharted spin-off. Uncharted 4, I feel will be a PS4 title. Same with God of War 4. Subtitled spin-offs, however, I think we may very well see. And I don’t mind, graphics especially seem to get better and better with each big title. The gameplay of Ascension looks fairly “been-there/done that,” but the graphics do look better than GOW3 to me. I imagine things will follow suit up until the end of the system’s life.

    #32 3 years ago
  33. ManuOtaku

    Erth but if you like those games, that like you said are extra sharp and polish for the power of the 360, and if the 360 is a mid tier PC right now, and obviously you like them, then you dont have any problems playing games that arent on the best RIG, which was precisely my point.

    And for the record i still love to play games like XIII, wind waker, odin sphere, muramasa, sly, because cel shaded games tend to old better within time rather than realistic ones , which old pretty quicklie due the constant upgrade in the power of graphics, and i believe they do not need the extra polish, those ps2/wii games look great even to today standards, and gamers can appreciate those graphics now too, so i think graphics is more than power, a compilation of artistry, imagination, and vibrant colours, among other things, which good power also helps, but is not the most important IMHO.

  34. Deacon

    @29 – no, no, no.

    So you’re effectively saying that we need the next gen so that developers can be lazy and put less effort in whilst getting optimal results?

    Even the best games have graphical glitches here and there. You’re basically saying a bit of texture pop-in ruins the gameplay for you. Holy sh1t do I feel sorry for you!!!

    Uncharted 3 was great, therefore no-one should release any more story-driven third person shooters on PS3? That’s crazy talk!

    How about judging a game based on story, characters, dialogue, audio.

    I’m playing Borderlands at the moment, and my god there’s some pretty awful texture pop-in when entering new areas. Does it affect the gameplay?? not in the least.

    If you let shit like that spoil your experience then you’re the one losing out.

    ..and newsflash, having a more powerful box won’t immediately cure all of these things you mention. As the standard goes up, these problems won’t disappear. You’ll be whining that we only have 4 x anti-aliasing, not x16 like on ‘that other game’.

    IMO you’re judging these things on completely the wrong criteria. But hey, whatever man :)

    “, but from now on stop bitching about difficulty in Blizzard games.

    difficulty in Blizzard raids also require performance.”

    I get what your saying, and agree with it too. I have seen PCs that choke and nearly die in raids. I don’t care who you are your not going to play well with a rig like that. Smooth performance is more important then prety shiny, and that is what your saying. It takes a quality rig to get smooth. Any old system can display a still pic. I get it.

    But as far as Blizz games go, I honestly think they miss the masses with their difficulty. And some of that is by design. Take a look at DiabloIII.

    When it came out it was too hard for me and my friends/family that bought it. We couldn’t get out of the second level of difficulty. We kept working and some of us made into the thrid level of difficulty. But none of us have made it beyond that, and all of us have stoped playing. I mention that, because that is our experience.

    You made it through, I assume with several toons, across all difficulties. I know others have as well. But once you hardcore guys got your jollies, Blizz then starts to lower the difficulty. they are tweaking with toon defenses, class surviabilties, etc. All in the name of “game balance” of course, but I think the truth is that in order to get/keep more poeple then just the hardcore playing, Blizz is tweaking the game so people like me and my friends/family can handle it.

    WoW works the same type of way. Now that MoP is coming out, expect to see the old content rebalanced once again. And by default, once players level up, older content becomes ascessible. I can’t count how many times my guild tackled out of date “end game” raids. Most of the hardcore raiders, like you and DSB will have moved on to the new end game raids, guilds like mine will start tackeling the raids that were end in Cati.

    For me, there is zero doubt that the recent offerings from Blizz have been too damn hard. I just can’t play them. I even strugle with StarCraft 2. I didn’t used to have that problem. I plowed through Diablo II, beat warcraft 1,2 and 3. And thought Starcraft was one of the finest RTS games I had ever played.

    Part of it could be that my skill have dipped. No doubt infact. I am not longer a hardcore gamer, skillwise. I used to be. I beat some of the tuffest games I can think of, years ago. But I can’t anymore. That is me. And I get that.

    But I think there is a vocal minority that clogs online forums. These players are dedicated and devoted. They are skilled and driven to conqure. And these guys(imo too often) have the ears of the devs. If all Blizz ever heard was these players, there games would be so tuff, other, more average gamers, wouldn’t be able to enjoy their games.

    And to an extent, that is exactly what I feel has happend. And it is a tuff thing to balance. How does Blizz please you and keep you playing without lossing me and my friends?

    And I am not picking on Blizz or singling them out, just going with the company you named and using them as an example and explaing why I often mention them myself.

    I love their games. But I got so frustraited playing Diablo III, that I doubt I would buy an expansion for it if/when one comes out. And while I know that every gamer must feel like they are in the majority, and that most other gamers feel the sameway they do, I honestly believe the average/casual players far out number the dedicated/hardcore players. So again it comes down to how do companies walk that line and make both groups happy?

    Moonwalker, I am betting that MS puts out their new system before Sony does. There is also a little voice in the back of my head that keeps telling me that Sony is considering ridding PS3 as long as Nintendo rides the WiiU. Not too sure what to think about little voices, sometimes they get things so very wrong. But every once in awhile they get a thing or two right…and wow, ya know?

    #40 I do agree OG, Sony this time can come with a more powerfull console but easier to develop for, i think two more years is not a bad scenario for them, i mean coming later than the microsoft console, but this time easier to develop for and with a decent price point, i think they can work with that while having great first party titles on the ps3 in the meantime.

    @40 & 41

    Yeah, i can definitely see that happening as well. I DO remember an article where Sony apparently had said that they don’t want to be the last one to come with a new console again, but it sure seems to be happening again. But the PS4 is coming, i remember them confirming it’s existence, or well..development of it. I honestly think they haven’t gotten the true potential of the PS3 yet, with beautiful looking games like The Last of Us there’s still more. While i agree that i would be fine with having the PS3 for a few more years, next to the new Xbox, i doubt it’s going to happen. I think this is just Sony’s way of saying they won’t abandon the PS3 easily after the PS4, which is something to apreciate it. MS seems to be doing that too, earlier this year after E3 a topman from MS said 360 still had several years of life in it.

    If you read the statement, it says supporting the PS3 for the next few yrs, doesn’t mean they can’t have a PS4 out the same time.
    Last generation was different cuz the gap between consoles was smaller, this has been the longest console generation. Think about it, as soon as PS4, xbox720 come out, do you really think both companies would stop making games etc for older consoles, theres millions in homes.
    They will make games for both generations till they start to see a shift in sales moving more toward nextgen.

    MS stoped pushing xbox one when xb360 came out. They even shutdown the xbox one arcade service, overnite, wife and I had to rebuy stuff like Astro Pop and Zuma on xb360. We also couldn’t get at DLC for xbox one games we owned and many of the games that didn’t mirgrate over to Live360 where just left for dead, like Mechassult, for example. Going on past experience, it leaves one to wonder.

    But I agree with what your saying drew, it could simply be that Sony will support PS3 for a few more years. But given Sonys market position, and finacials, and being unable to establish Vita, they may decide to hold off on putting out a new system right now or in the near future.

    Time will tell.
