PSA: Vita firmware update 1.8 releases next week
Vita firmware update 1.8 lands next week, and as announced in July and reconfirmed during gamescom, the update will bring over 100 PSone Classics to the handheld. The update will also include the new Cross-Controller feature, and the ability to control the home screen and some application features using the buttons. Vita firmware update 1.8 releases on August 28.

It’s a bit weird that where ever i look, ” the ability to control the home screen” is marked as a new feature, while that already is a feature that already works since a few months. So either, this ain’t a new feature, or I have a really special Vita & PS3.

That’s remote play, the PSP could do that too. That essentially takes control of the PS3 and puts its XMB on your Vita screen. This new feature is like making the Vita a controller, so the output is still on the TV but you control it with the Vita. At least that is how I understand it

@DrDamn: Nope, you are mistaken
Cross-controller (a bad name!) is all about giving PS3 games an extra screen (the Vita) for more info and input, a lot like Wii U. Look at how the upcoming Cross-Controller pack for LBP2 is using it. It gives some very interesting possibilities in PS3 games, unfortunately it will never catch on because of the small Vita user base
