Dead or Alive 5’s controversial female character designs meet Team Ninja’s goals, according to producer Yosuke Hayashi.

In an interview, PlayStation Universe asked Hayashi what his response would be to criticism of Dead or Alive 5’s female designs as sexist.

The developer replied that Team Ninja’s aim was to make “the cutest chicks in videogames” and that Dead or Alive 5 has nailed it. It’s an answer that totally fails to address the issues raised by the question, of course, but okay.

Hayashi also said that the development team had paid close attention to Dead or Alive’s famous bouncing breasts, even going so far as to say the team was very “hands-on” with that “feature”, which I’m hoping is a mistranslation and not a deliberate blokey blokey bloke joke.

Dead or Alive 5 releases on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September and if you buy the special edition you’ll score a set of alternate swimsuit costumes for female characters. Hooray.
