First purported images of new PS3 4000-model surface

Shots of what are purportedly the 4000 Series PlayStation 3 which popped up in FCC listings last week have surfaced over on PS3trophies.

The current PS3 is the 3000 Series, and the model mentioned in the FCC filing is the CECH-4001x.

According to the site, the images were pulled from Anatel, the Brazilian Agency of Telecommunications, an first reported by Brazillian tech site Tecnoblog.

The site states the new PS3 is super slim – basically slimmer than PS3 slim – and will coming three flavors: 16GB (or is it 160GB?), 250GB, and 500GB.

Sony is rumored to announced the slimmer model at gamescom next month.

Thanks, ejams .

Probably need to see proper press shots, but it certainly looks… interesting.

I find it puzzling why Sony are still using this weird alien spaceship convex style. Looks fugly.

Much like Gematsu, you posted the error of “16GB”. Use a bit of common sense and take that as 160 GB, no matter what the original source said.

@2 Wow. I will start assuming more often then despite 5 different sites stating the same. Also, thanks for being so nice about it. :/

@2 How do you know it’s an error?

It could easily be a 16GB flash version, thus enabling Sony to lop a sizable chunk off of the price, as they are not including a HDD, which is always going to add cost.

That is probably Sony’s 360 Arcade version which they’ll be able to sell cheaper.

#2 Source for this information? It could be a 16GB model for all we know. Much like the budget 4GB Xbox 360.

After seeing the other photos, this one honestly looks a lot better than the current slim (except for the top… it looks out of place). I wonder what the selling point of this will be? Going simply “even more slim than before!” doesn’t sound like the best idea ever, especially in Sony’s current position. I’m sensing some decent changes/additions. Still rolling with my original fatty though, and it’s still the best :)

Top loading by the look of it, which suggests they are trying to keep this one as cheap as possible. I suspect it’ll come with a decent price drop and bring it closer to the magic £100 entry point. Something the current generation have been far too slow in getting to.

Hope its reeaally cheap so that more consumers buy it.

Considering Sony just announced their deal with Gaikai, a 16GB version of the console seems feasible. If it runs quieter than the current 3000 series PS3, and they get rid of the texturing of the top of it, and still have the ability to fit a 1TB Hard Drive to it, I’d be keen.

@1. I’ve always thought the domed top was a clever design decision by Sony so you can’t stack it under other equipment meaning its always on top of other stuff. It maximises it’s presence in your living space. Clever I think.

The only thing that would make me buy a newer ps3 to replace my fatty is if they included proper BWC for ps1 and ps2.

@16, Never gonna happen as long as those HD remakes keep selling.

@18

They have PS2 games on the PSN store that work on the PS3. HD remakes are up to the publishers of the game to do them.

^ Them too. Why install backwards compatability, when they can just sell you it all over again?

@20

Well seeing how Sony has to put in hardware for backward compatibility you won’t see it ever. Hopefully SOny keeps this in mind with next gen and will make PS4 Backwards compatible.

^ Exactly. Though I can’t see the ps4 being backwards compatible either tbh. If it is, it’ll only go back as far as ps3.

or PS1 but skip PS2 unless they find a way to emulate PS2 games via software.
