Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut to provide “a sense of personalization with the endings”

During a Mass Effect 3 panel at PAX East, BioWare producer Mike Gamble said the game’s Extended Cut DLC would provide players with “a sense of personalization with the endings.”

“Many people mentioned that some of the choices they made in the game are not necessarily reflected in the ending scenes,” said Gamble. “We’re definitely going to focus on things like that. We want to make sure that when you see the ending of Mass Effect, you now have the information and context to be satisfied.”

The content will include more than “just a few cinematic scenes,” he said, noting that the cinematics and writing teams are “building it” at the moment and things are “coming together.”

However, Gamble said that while the writing team still “stands by” the ending it created, despite being “proud of” the finished product it was important to “listen to the community.”

“A lot of that feedback didn’t come until the game came out, once we were listening we decided to include the extended cut,” he said. “It wasn’t in the game because we didn’t know there was such a huge demand for it, to be honest with you.”

The DLC was announced last week with BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka commenting that with Extended Cut, “we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe.”

    “Some choices” not reflected? How about NO CHOICES were reflected in the ending. And really, if you don’t think people want any closure after spending 100 hours through three games you are…well…I don’t know…

    I think @1 got it completely right.

    They should just be honest and say: Sorry, we f****d up. They would have much more respect from their customers then. It is ok to make mistakes. But don’t try to hide behind PR-speak. Be open about it instead.

    @5 No, but seriously, you did not like the ending.. So what?

    I for one still think Frodo should’ve died at the end of LOTR, but it’s not like I started a petition for J. R. R. Tolkien to change it? (Ignore the fact that he was dead before I was born).

    @6: I haven’t started any petitions to change the ending that I know of. Haven’t signed any either. I am complaining about a product I spent money on with the HOPE of bioware to change to product to match what was promised pre-launch. Nothing more. And it appears they atleast are trying to fix some of it. It might be enough. We’ll see. I do think they should have forseen this and not rushed the ending like it appear they did.

    Anyways.

    Naughty Dog changed the shooting mechanics quite a lot in Uncharted 3 post launch based on player feedback. They weren’t hiding behind “artistic integrity”. They simply fixed it and made the game radically more enjoyable.

    Countless films have changed endings when finished after they didn’t screen well when subjected to audience feedback. That is part of the process. This is the same thing, but on a grander scale. And with video games it is possible to fix them afterwards.

    @6, And I don’t think anyone making a comment here actually started a petition either. That doesn’t mean they can’t say they disliked the ending and agree with the people that did start a petition.

    The complaints about this game (the ones that make sense, at least) are not really about the ending as much as they are about Bioware’s comments about the ending. The game could have ended any way and it would have been fine, as long as Bioware’s producers and writers made no ‘promises’ about the ending. To these people, comments like the following from Casey Hudson are damning:

    “[ME3 is] not even in any way like the traditional game endings, where you can say how many endings there are or whether you got ending A, B, or C. . . . The endings have a lot more sophistication and variety in them.”

    The problem these people have, then, is really not about the artistic choices Bioware’s staff made in creating the game. Their problem is that Bioware supposedly ‘lied’ about the game and how it ends.

    That said, I have not played any of the Mass Effect games and have not taken a side about the whole issue. I just think a lot of people are talking past each other when arguing about the game.

    @1 I’m also hearing ‘reviewers weren’t even slightly critical of our product, we got nothing but positive feedback’ and I wonder why.

    All those reviewers who got to play the game through before launch and give it top marks, not one felt the same way so many players feel?

    @6 Obviously you haven’t paid much attention about what the anti-ME3-ending guys are complaining about. Very few of them are complaining about Shepard’s death. Most the their complains are:

    1. Contradicting facts in the plots, inconsistencies, plot holes.
    2. Bioware broke their promise. False advertisement. Someone lied.
    3. Lack of closure. One of ME’s success is that it has created so many characters that players are emotionally attached to. But ME3 ending didn’t talk much about them.
    4. The truth (the sudden show-up of the real villain, his identity, the reasons of their evil nature) just doesn’t make sense.

    1&2 are simply objective facts. They have nothing to do with “player like it or not”, or Bioware’s bxllxxit of “artistic vision”.

    Bioware just used “artistic integrity” to change the public focus, and the mass media fell for it.

    That’s simply not true. The fact that they promised one thing and did the other is an insult, but it is only a small thing compared to how bad the ending is in itself. I did not put much attention to what they were promising, as I was about to buy the game anyway, but the ending was a shock. Only after I finished the game I got to know about Bioware’s promises.

    I understand that the ending might have been really bad and full of plot holes, but games have those all the time. What I was trying to say is that it’s Bioware’s comments that gave people the idea to complain about false advertising and so forth.

    There are apparently a lot of problems people have with the ending of the game, but the people complaining about false advertising are not merely raving about the game not ending the way they would have wanted. These are not (just) problems about artistic direction, but about broken promises.
