Report – IGN sources detail, confirm Sony’s rumored PS4 specs

Wednesday, 4th April 2012 19:37 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Sources close to IGN have said rumors of the tech inside Sony’s next console, rumored to be codenamed Orbis, does indeed utilize AMD’s A8-3850 APU and a Radeon HD 7670 GPU.

While IGN notes the chips rumored for PS4 are based on the off-the-shelf parts detailed below, the tech is being “custom tooled for the console” so “exact specs may vary.”

The A8-3850 has a quad-core 2.9GHz processor with an integrated graphics chip while the APU will “work in tandem with the system’s dedicated GPU, the HD 7670″ which is a DirectX 11 card “clocked to 1GHz with up to 1GB of dedicated VRAM.”

The HD 7670 is a version of 2011′s HD 6670 with identical specs and rumored to be the same card used in the next Xbox console.

The A8-3850 is an HD 6550D so the APU would be capable of running games “at baseline specs and lower resolutions without the help of a discrete GPU.” Put together with the HD 7670 and a “symmetrical CrossFire configuration” will be utilized to “share the load of realtime graphics processing.”

Of course, all of this is conjecture at this point and time, as Sony has yet to announce what it plans on including in the next PlayStation console.

    7670 GPU

Now that is not next gen (for xbox 360 and PS3 of course it’s next gen. This videocard is more powerful than PS3 for about x10 times).
My videocard in my PC now is more powerful than it’s rumored videocard for PS4 that will be launched for the next year.

    7670 launched in January, 2012 and it’s PCIe 2.1 x16 512/1024 MB memory.

It’s the last PCIe 2.1 videocard in AMD/Northern Island series. That is just hilarious.

If that is going to be for another 8-10 years, God please kill Sony and it’s console.

I hope Microsoft’s rumored 2 GPU’s will be much better than this that will be launched…. next year. :( They have more money to spend anyway.

@1 Tehnicly this is also 2 GPU because APU also have GPU+CPU and + 7670.

With this videocard i’m not really sure that all Next Gen Games with Next Gen graphics will be 1080p Only because 7670 is not really that great.

4K resolution won’t be for games for another 8-10 years, maybe for movies only.

@3, i’m just judging videocard alone. It’s not really that powerful. Compare for example the latest AMD videocard with the latest intel or AMD CPU to rumored Ps4 for 2013 and it will be old little geezer.

Ertahzus, it doesn’t seem like your argument is completely well thought-out. You’re basically bitching because a big expensive computer is on paper more powerful than a budget-class console. “duh”?

Look at the price of graphics card, the cutting edge models costs more than a console itself, of course consoles won’t outclass that.

If you had compared a console and a computer with equally powerful hardware, the console would produce “better” results. Because consoles allow for higher optimization, PC games has to be optimized for thousands of different hardware and software configurations. Console games only need to push that single platform, and that allows developers to push the limits and use dirty hacks to achieve better results.

Don’t worry about the hardware rumored here. They’re MUCH more powerful than what is offered in today’s consoles, so the jump will be significant. 2 GPUs on Xbox won’t happen, that will just generate too much heat.

Look back at PS2. that thing had 32mb memory, and remember the games on that? Pretty f’ing great. A PC with 32mb memory wouldn’t be able to do the same. The same thing holds true even now, less powerful consoles can run software equally powerful computers can’t.

So stop bitching, power isn’t everything. Unless you want consoles priced at 800$.

@6 AGREED! And well said… If we where on N4G I would award you a bubble for that!

“If you had compared a console and a computer with equally powerful hardware, the console would produce “better” results. Because consoles allow for higher optimization,”

Well, thanks captain obvious. I know that, but that says that we will stick to the 7670 level of visuals for 8-10 years knowing Sony.

When Ps3 was on the market, after one year you could buy a top videocard and play all games on the highest resolution and with max settings (that are miles better than on PS3) till the next gen.

“Don’t worry about the hardware rumored here. They’re MUCH more powerful than what is offered in today’s consoles, so the jump will be significant.”

Of course they will be x10 times better, but how long it will last till PC’s will have much better hardware? Oh none because PC’s hardware is already better.

“Look back at PS2. that thing had 32mb memory, and remember the games on that? ”

Pretty much nothing special at the times where PC was a juggernaut of the industry. There were good games, Yes. But PS2 never stopped the progression in visuals and other stuff that were on the PC.

“Unless you want consoles priced at 800$.”

In 2006 Ps3 had 600$ launch price (+ with some peripherals) it could cost you +100$-200$ = 700$ or 800$ in the end.

Don’t forget that you need HDTV and oh… you need also speakers and games.

So 800$? No problem for them.
iPad already costs a lot with iPhone.

Look, i don’t want PS4 or XboxNext to have the latest videocards and CPU’s and i don’t want them to cost a lot, but i don’t want consoles to stop evolution in visuals and other stuff that can improve the games.
If console will be supported with the same hardware for 5 years than OK, but if this shit will continue for 10 years then fuck this.

“The HD 7670 is a version of 2011′s HD 6670 with identical specs and rumored to be the same card used in the next Xbox console.”

so what’s the difference then between two next gen systems?

The thing is Erth, I think like a few others, you were just expecting too much out next gen systems. I have been saying all along, smoother, faster, shinnier. Thats all we are going to get. Nothing staggering. Just nicer. I expect 60fps and 1080p, on most games. Better AA, more colors, and you pretty much have it.

PC is and always will be better graphicly to a console, you know that.

    #10 3 years ago
  11. Erthazus

@OG, with 7670 which is OLD 6670 won’t be enough for 60 frames per second and 1080p.

    No way. No Way !

30 frames per second at best and 1080p is still a question because we are talking about Next Generation that will have much better visuals and performance. It Will have shiny new effects and stuff.

I won’t buy that for sure. I will stick to the PC and my PS3 if it’s just an upgrade.

but yeah, 7670.. or 6670 will support 16x AA, FSAA, direct X11 no doubt.

    #11 3 years ago
  12. OlderGamer

It will be even worse if Sony/MS make a 3D push. That will drop visuals even more.

Honestly tho, I wouldn’t buy a console for its graphics. I would only buy a console if the games that were exclusive to iT, interest me. If I was a Halo fan, and Xbox would make sense. Same if I wanted to play GT or Uncharted, then Orbis is it.

My next gen plan, Nintendo games. A decent PC, and Steam. I mean look no way in hell I am missing out on somethings like Diablo III, Tourchlight 2, or Guild Wars 2. Consoles just don’t often do those kind of games and when they do, they aren’t very well done. PC for the win. Simple as.

It just doesn’t mean that consoles are worthless. Buy em for the games, thats all.

    #12 3 years ago
  13. Erthazus

@12, you are absolutely right about that.

It’s just Sony and Microsoft will start selling these consoles for a lot of money having old hardware in it.

It’s Sony and Microsoft and they love money.

By the way, if this is true, than GPU that will be in XBOXNext and PS4 will be much worse than Wii U GPU that is R770.

    Cool, huh?

    #17 3 years ago
  18. CPC_RedDawn

@17 The rumour for the Wii GPU is a variant of the HD4870 which is pretty old now. But still packs a punch when compared to current gen consoles.

What people have forgotten is that current gen consoles are so old and out dated now that they could put any current mid range GPU in the next systems and the graphics will still look awesome.

Just look at what devs have squeezed out of current console hardware. Games like Uncharted, and the Last Guardian all look stunning. So even with a 4870 or a 6670 or a 7670 games will look great. Because console games are tailor made for one specific set of hardware. It will just come down to which ever console is easier and cheaper to program for. By the looks of things each console wont be too far off from each other in terms of horsepower, and it seems that rumours are pointing to ALL three companies using AMD/ATI hardware. Which means most third party titles will look and run great on all systems.

I would still love for there to be a system released that uses a Core i7 Eight-Core Sandy Bridge Extreme clocked at 5.0GHz with 8GB RAM, and Four GTX680 chips in SLI. But guess what, that simply aint going to happen. Because, #1 it will cost an arm and a leg. #2 It would over heat and set on fire, and finally #3 it would be MASSIVE in size.

I bet that this time round, there will be a massive emphasis on downloadable games such as the ones we have seen on XBLA, Steam, and PSN. Smaller games, that will appeal to both the casual and core gamers. Games that will sell for around £10-£20, or even be F2P (free-to-play) with micro-transactions.

This is just my two cents.

“but yeah, 7670.. or 6670 will support 16x AA, FSAA, direct X11 no doubt.”

You do know that FSAA is the same as 16x AA don’t you. FS means “Full Screen” which is the same if not worse than normal MSAA (multisample).

Most consoles now have adopted the much faster and more efficient FXAA. Which is a post process filter done on the GPU that gives edges on the screen a blurred effect to mask and hide the jaggies. If used properly it can give the same results as 4xMSAA.

Also, the only console that will use DX is Microsofts Xbox. Seen as, you know, they wrote the damn thing. Sony and Nintendo both use either their own source code, or OpenGL.

    yeah but look at this:

“Xbox 720′s raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo’s forthcoming console, the Wii U.”

so should we care about IGN anymore?

If MS releases it with Kinect in the box, it’s going to be gimp city…..
Something isn’t quite right though, I heard the 6670 is a rebranded 5670, now the 7760 is a rebranded 6670? I doubt there is no difference in performance between a 5670 and a 7760, but if thats true, sigh….

I’m with Erthazus on that one. The specs are not so bad but considering the consoles will be released at the end of 2013 early 2014 and with a life-cycle of 10 years, that’s not enough power.

Can you imagine the difference in power between the PC and consoles in 2022 if PC now are already more powerful than next-gen consoles?

I just hope more devs make PC their #1 dev platform and consoles become toys like gaming on ipad or something similar.

Main problem with this config is not videcard, but CPU. A8-3850 is slow and hot, so slow, that Cell CPU are faster at almost every task! Low-end Power7 CPU are faster and have almost twice better TDP. So I could not understand, why chose sad AMD stuff over normal 4-core 16-thread Power7 (710 or 720 CPU)?

Dam microsoft, if it wasn’t for them in the gaming industry then the ps$ wouldn’t be arriving so soon! What’s the point of a ps4 coming next year if all we are going to get is slight visual upgrades.. i’m fine with current gen visual, i just hope the next system offers advanced ai, physics, cpu power, I want games of epic scale that is truly groundbreaking, not just slight upgrades in the visual department.
