Ninja Theory received death threats over DMC

Friday, 6 January 2012 09:00 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Ninja Theory creative boss Tameem Antoniades has said the studio has received death threats over its reboot of Devil May Cry.

Speaking to OXM, Antoniades said he was prepared for backlash after being warned about it by his writing partner on Enslaved, and 28 Days Later writer, Alex Garland.

“Alex Garland warned me about it because he experienced a similar thing with 28 Days Later where people were upset that it didn’t feature real zombies. And now with his upcoming Dredd movie,” he said.

“So I was half prepared for it, although I have to say that it has been pretty eye opening to see some of the creative ways in which people have chosen to vent their hatred. We didn’t expect death threats in comic book form or anti-DmC death metal songs!”

Antoniades went on say he expects the fanboy rage to subdue some more after more gameplay footage and impressions on the game come out.

“It’s pretty hard for me to back the decisions we made without showing actual gameplay to the public. So until that time comes, and it will come soon, I just have to put up with the rage.

“Though I must say, lots of people have come and said that they are now interested in DmC whereas they had previously lost interest in the series. We’ll see how this plays out.”

DMC is expected later this year for PS3 and 360.

Wow. This scares me, specially since I’m actually looking forward to this game. Seriously, after the way DMC4 destroyed any interest I had left in the series, this is the only game that can revive Dante IMO.

Heck, if it wasn’t for DMC3, I would have abandoned these games after the sublime original.

And later on we complain about the lack of original ideas in long runing game series from developers, what can we expect if some gamers go that far?, man this developers will even be afraid to change the color of the belt of dante for the next game o_O
P.S Next time before people start to complain about the same COD, mario kart, uncharted, halo, etc well you get the point, think about this and maybe you know why

@11: Exactly why i support NT’s DmC. Otherwise i’d be one of those hypocrites who complain about CoD not changing, while begging for DMC not changing anything.

It’s the internet, anything and everything with a large enough audiance will generate death threats. Games, books, movies, everything.

You cannot hold those silly extremes as reasons for why game development is a certain way or why some things get greenlit and not others.

Death threats are the background noise that get ignored, or at most forwarded to law enforcement if they think it’s credible. It’s a part of being in the spotlight.

    @11 & @12
Good call on those hypocrites among gamers. Seriously, we have an audience who’s always begging for fresh and new games but protests the change in the FREAKING color of someone’s HAIR.

When it comes to showing their support with their actions rather than empty words, those same people buy CODs and other stuff every year while abandoning new games like Enslaved or innovative sequels like Rayman Origins. A few months later, they start complaining about lack of original and fresh games and the cycle continues.

  16. Freek

Being new doesn’t automaticly make it any good. It has to be both.

Its not black and white and so straight cut you can not just claim that everyone complaining about the new Dante is just as bad as those that love every new CoD. Thats just knee jerk and silly.

Heres a hypothetical for you, imagine if Capcom gave the DMC series to Platinum, or Grasshopper or even Tecmo. Imagine each of those studios changed up the series to the same level that Ninja Theory has, there would be less anger and hate because there would be a belief that those studios have the talent to do the themes and strengths of the series justice. Fans would still be angry but thats always to be expected, NT have more or less changed the games genre by swapping out MT Framework for UE3.

NT have shown nothing outside of some nice story and character work, which was never of importance in DMC.

The thing I never understand with these full reboots is that they always seem to upset those that actually love the games, even in this very comments threads the people looking forward to it have all pretty much said they had no love for the series. So why fucking reboot it?

Tomb Raider is how you reboot a series and still keep the original fans on board. Not this, not Capcom being bullish and stand off-ish, not over blowing internet rage into “Death Threats”.

I hope Tameem does die though.

    #18 3 years ago
  19. Freek

    Exactly.

It’s what killed Enslaved and what is most worrying about the DMC.
Ninja Theory always prioritizes animation and story over combat and gameplay.
It’s why Heavnly Sword was dull, Enslaved wasn’t interesting and what could potentially happen to DMC.

It’s nice that you get all the hollywood writing and motion capture tallent money can buy, but it has to play good first.

@18: “Imagine each of those studios changed up the series to the same level that Ninja Theory has”

But that would never happen. Because someone like PLATINUMGAMES would just deliver the same anime bullshit we’ve seen over and over again.

If it would’ve people would still complain. You overestimate the intelligence of players. Most don’t even know the difference between publishers and developers.

“NT have more or less changed the games genre by swapping out MT Framework for UE3.”

What a dumb comment that is. No need to go into that.

“The thing I never understand with these full reboots is that they always seem to upset those that actually love the games, even in this very comments threads the people looking forward to it have all pretty much said they had no love for the series. So why fucking reboot it?”

Dunno what you’re talking about. I loved it, then saw it wasn’t going to develop into a better direction. Glad it got rebooted.

“Tomb Raider is how you reboot a series and still keep the original fans on board.”

This series was dead in the water. The reboot for DMC came to early for some people. Not for me. Why does a series always have to hit Sonic-Level before its reboot?

“I hope Tameem does die though.”

That’s just disgusting and stupid and makes me sad i thought you were one of the smarter people on this site.

#21, TR didn’t even approach the level of Sonic, it was doing just fine up until TRU.

They’ve just released one buggy, unfinished entry (Underworld), if you followed CD then you would know that.. there’s just this ongoing myth about TR being dead because it’s nothing compared to the 8 million + selling behemoth 90s predecessor. #18 is right on the money.

It was a joke! Lighten up a bit before you have a heart attack!

Its true though, Enslaved perfectly illustrated NT’s level of competancy in using the engine, sure it looks pretty as hell and colours everywhere but there was an alarming lack of enemies. Of course they tied that in with the deserted and lonely feeling the game strived towards but looking at nearly all the other UE3 games most of them are 30FPS, still have texture pop-in and a lack of enemy numbers. I guess its just part of the engine.

If they can work some magic and get enemy levels upwards of 10-20 then I be amazed.

DMC lived through its combat, it was tight, reponsive and rewarding. Enslaved was none of those things.

    #23 3 years ago
  24. ManuOtaku

For me this reboot, is on the same line of the metroid prime series done by retro and the new donkey kong on wii, retro is a talented developer for sure, and maybe for some of you Ninja Theory is not that talented, which can be debated of course, but retro didnt deviate to much from the metroid and donkey kong roots, becuase nintendo oversee the development of the game, the same can be said about this game capcom is overlooking the development of this reboot, so i dont expect the combat be as similar as in Enslaved and heavenly sword, which i did like i didnt find it that bad really, for me it will be an step further from the previous games of this franchise, with a lot a new additions given by NT minds, which in my eyes is good, the only thing that people are concern and that have a solid proof, not like combat which we dont know for sure, is the new look and the new story, which shouldnt be criticize the way it has been IMHO.

    #24 3 years ago
  25. YoungZer0

@23: I guess you missed all the videos where NT talked about how they tightened up the controls? How they improved upon their experience with combat with the help of CAPCOM?

Or did you saw all those videos and thought: Nope, not giving them a chance?

I also agree with you on not being enough enemies on screen. Hope they can prove us wrong. Games like Arkham City had many enemies on the screen. So it can be done with the engine.

    19 nailed it.

Ninja Theory havent made a decent game this gen. They have made dull, shallow vehicles for Serkis to ham it up on and nothing more.

Games should ALWAYS be built on a foundation of solid gameplay. NT are working from a film makers perspective, and they keep failing to make good games because of it.

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Ireland Michael

@26 “Ninja Theory havent made a decent game this gen.”

    Entirely subjective opinion.

I consider Heavenly Sword to be an incredible spectacle fighter (the only problem with that game is the Sixaxis sections forced on by Sony), and Enslaved was one of my favourite adventure titles of the past few years.

Sure, its gameplay wasn’t the deep it, but neither is God of War 3′s and that gets a free pass all the time. Enslaved was about exploration, not blowing shit up.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. absolutezero

I loved Enslaved, Heavenly Sword less so much because its combat boiled down to Paper, Scissor, Rock with the stances, that and it was clunky and un-responsive.

I did watch, I think one video with them talking about the combat. What I took away from that was a pat on the head for people that are worried. Again im not being down on this because its new or different im being down on this because it never really needed to happen. DMC 4 sold more than any other entry in the series, it sold a pretty healthy amount for the kind of game it was. If they had choosen to build and enhance and create some new ideas within the central structure of the existing series it could have become something amazing and sold bucketloads.

Capcom in their infinite wisdom decided to court an un-proven developer with a history of half decent adventure games with great voice work and acting.

Like Asura’s Wrath Capcom employed Cyber Connect to make a game for them, only there its a new series which is great, NT could have made something great with the help of Capcom. Instead they choose to fart all over a beloved series.

    Exploration in Enslaved?

I sent my rental back after enduring about 4-5 hours worth of its tedium, so things may open up later in the game, but the only exploring available to me was exploring the width of the extremely narrow, linear path through the levels. Or exploring how I wasnt given the option to fail at any jump or climb. Or exploring the awful combat engine. ;)

Pretty cutscenes though. Lots of em too.

  30. SplatteredHouse

Their messaging has caused difficulties, so far. They start out by presenting…Dante? (;) ) All that punchy, clever original trailer really gave and established. People probably aren’t expecting that person under inquisition to reveal that as his identity.

Since then, that’s not been seen. It’s themes, none of it. They’ve tried to publicly paint and show DMC as “more Devil May Cry”, really. Except, that was what was on offer in 4, and yet it’s the original and 3rd that still set pulses racing, and there’s a reason for that.
Genres need to be able to evolve, characters need to be allowed to move, and developers should feel that they have (and can take) room to breathe.

The panto death threat headlines aren’t doing anyone any good. They should stand behind the game, they should present the game, and maybe then there’ll be something to garner support. The report says that they were aware of a likelihood of disgruntled reaction, but then, it’s trying to be made in to a big deal when the internet does what The Internet do? Come back again when you have something to say, NT.

@26: Disagree. Loved Heavenly Sword and Enslaved.

The only thing I’m confident in about DmC is that Andy Serkis will probably give a great performance in whatever role they put him in. Otherwise, there is not a single thing that makes this game attractive to me and I hope that it flops badly, so we can get a proper DMC5.

I’ve been encouraging people who are actual fans of the series to ignore this abomination, but to pick up the Devil May Cry HD Collection when it comes out. If this tanks, but that sells well, it sends a definite message to Capcom.

As for the “death threats,” I think Tameem is being a bit of a drama queen. There’s a huge difference between someone making a comic where the real Dante kills him and someone actually calling him up and threatening his family. The first is completely acceptable because he’s a public figure and thus subject to satire. The second would be completely wrong and should be prosecuted under the full extent of the law.

    #32 3 years ago
  33. absolutezero

This is Capcom remember, we are fucked either way. If its a roaring success then the orignal games are buried and gone. If its a failure then Capcom will simply use that as an excuse to shelves the series.

    Like Megaman!

  34. Gheritt White

I also liked Enslaved, although the combat would have been more interesting had it been more complex. As I’ve said before, this is the first DmC that’s ever commanded my interest. I hope it rocks and that lots of people have to wolf down large servings of humble pie as a result.

I concur with all the comments about innovation – everyone wants it in theory, but Not In My Back Yard, so to speak. Tbh, I’m the same – I’m all for innovation but threw a fit when I saw what Blizzard had done to Diablo 3. Will I still buy it? Of course I will!

I’ve no concerns over the combat in NT’s DmC, though. From the trailers it looks right up my street and the fact they invited a a selection of top DMC players over to their studio for hands-on feedback is a very promising sign.

“I’ve been encouraging people who are actual fans of the series to ignore this abomination, but to pick up the Devil May Cry HD Collection when it comes out. If this tanks, but that sells well, it sends a definite message to Capcom.”

That would work, and not backfire terribly, if you’ve correctly presumed where Capcom’s thinking is, on DMC! If they see “DMC” as a chance to start over, considered as within the Devil May Cry franchise, and a move intended to get things moving again; and it doesn’t do well enough for them, where does that leave the future for the Devil May Cry franchise?
“Ignore this abomination”…Because, with that kind of language you surely know enough about the game at this stage, to be knowledgable enough to cast it away and encourage other people to do the same.

Your enthusiasm for the Devil May Cry HD Collection is fine, but kicking DMC at the same time, baselessly, may end up doing your “cause” more harm than good, as if that happened on a great scale, perhaps Capcom looks more warily at proposals from its internal staff that are less closely aligned to the DMC framework as it is (consider the current status of Megaman Legends 3, as precedent for such attitude), but may actually become a positive if allowed to be developed, and realised to a playable state.

    #35 3 years ago
  36. Ireland Michael

@35 The only thinking convincing people to buy the HD collection over the new game will do is prove to Capcom that it is, in fact, perfectly okay to continue rehashing the same content over and over again (DR2: OTR, UMvC2, etc.) instead of working on something genuinely new. Because people are clearly willing to buy it.

@32: “I’ve been encouraging people who are actual fans of the series to ignore this abomination,”

Good job you tosser. You know i actually was a Fan of the series. But with people like you saying the same about them, i can’t help but feel ashamed.

“but to pick up the Devil May Cry HD Collection when it comes out. If this tanks, but that sells well, it sends a definite message to Capcom.”

    Oh, i bet it does;

Don’t you ever try something new. Instead rehash the same shit. Don’t you dare even try to include new textures into your HD Collections. People are stupid.

    #37 3 years ago

@37 If the recent Resident Evil HD re-releases are anything go to go by, the DMC HD Collection will be nothing more than an upscaled emulation of the originals with absolutely no improvements whatsoever.

@38: They’ve released some footage of the HD Collection. It’s exactly like the “HD” version of Resident Evil.

@36: That’s a danger, but it’s also not as if Capcom has a large enough back catalogue in this series to be able to hold out on remakes.

I don’t think that success of HDT would herald a swathe of half-hearted knocked together attempts released just because. I doubt the market would accept that. I think DMC HDT is a genuine attempt to present well regarded games in a more pleasing light, dust the lot off, and bring the series to new eyes (platforms, make it more accessible) and present for original fans to revisit. I don’t see many negative points where this Collection is concerned.

I appreciate the examples that you gave, to add to the point you made for evidence suggesting an add-on culture at Capcom (DR2: OTR, UMvC2, etc.), but I would say that these are examples of easily augmented concepts of gameplay, the case of (U)MvC2 being even more so due to its glut of DLC releases for download and frequent balance updates, that then get collected and packaged as new discs.

@34 “I hope it rocks and that lots of people have to wolf down large servings of humble pie as a result.”

The fans of the original Devil May Cry games will not care if it’s good or not. The reason they are upset is because Ninja Theory are effectively destroying a character and series they love by changing the backstory and the actual characters of the game. Even if it’s got the most amazing gameplay, story, and graphics in the world, it’s just not Devil May Cry anymore.
