Director says FFXIII-2 will have easier-to-follow story than XIII

During an interview with Square Enix Members, Motomu Toriyama said that the follow-up to Final Fantasy XIII will have a storyline that is easier to understand, and they learned from XIII’s difficulties to explain complex concepts in the universe.

“As far as the story of Final Fantasy XIII is concerned,” Toriyama said, “the most important mission for us was to express the game’s unique universe — including l’Cie and fal’Cie — and therefore some difficult terms had to be used in the story-telling. We have taken a lesson from it and employed a different story-telling style for Final Fantasy XIII-2.”

“The basic elements of the Final Fantasy XIII universe continue to be present as the backdrop while the story now centres around Time Paradox, a more familiar form of mystery.”

“Meanwhile, we have taken strong inspirations from one-shot TV dramas and opted for a different plot structure where smaller pieces of drama take place quickly one after another. As a result of these changes, the Final Fantasy XIII-2 story has turned out to have a glimpse of a more contemporary drama and is easier to follow in comparison to Final Fantasy XIII.”

You know what I dislike about 13? (about the story, I dislike plenty besides) There’s this expectation that you’ll learn about the world by reading chapters upon chapters of crap from their in-game encyclopaedia rather than just giving you enough to figure out out from the narrative or through exploration of the world. I dislike the way Bioware do this also.

They made the game linear as fuck so there is little opportunity to converse with NPC’s and actually get that info.
