DICE details design ideas behind BF3′s Back to Karkand expansion pack

Saturday, 12th November 2011 14:30 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Maps featured in Battlefield 3′s Back to Karkand DLC will apparently become “part of the same rotation as the base maps” once available, according to a statement given to Joystiq.

No word from EA just yet on whether future maps will follow the same route, as DICE is currently focused on Karkand at the moment.

In the meantime, to get you ready for December’s DLC, DICE has updated the Battleblog with a look at how the designers wanted returning players to “get the sense that these are cool new maps, and then suddenly realize they know them by heart.”

Lead designer Niklas Fegraeus said the feeling of the maps should be new despite the layout being the “same as before.”

Upon release, Back to Karkand will be free for those who pre-ordered the BF3 and cost £11.99 f/$14.99/1200 MSP for those who didn’t.

I hope that EA/Dice remove the requirement to use its spyware so I can get myself playing it.

@1 Oh, give it a fucking rest already.

EA is not “spying” on anything. It’s all written out in the Terms of Service, which alone stops it from falling under the definition of spyware.

Countless programmes, games and service do the things Steam does. World of Warcraft does this. Steam does most of this.

E.A. is not sitting in some secret laboratory trawling through your private programme data to see what pornographic games you’re playing, so your dirty little secret is safe.

I love how overly self-important people delude themselves into thinking they are with this sort of stuff. E.A. will never care about your specific data directly.

You still wouldn’t play it, since you think Frostbite is shit.

Wow. It just must be some huge conspiracy against all us consumers, right? Sure, I recognize that I was skeptical about the terms when I first heard about them, but upon doing a little simple reading it became painfully clear that EA really only does it to benefit consumers. They have the data about peoples systems, and can use it to optimize, or in planning or whatever. It’s nothing bad.

The only difference of note, as far as I’m aware, is that Steam gives you the option to opt out (or at least they used to).

Ok lets clear a few things up

Talkar – you need to start actually learning to read. Trust me, it makes life a little easier.

Frostbite IS a shit engine and not Frostbite 2. Why is it shit? Look at the posts I have made, or in a nutshell – any engine that offers bullet proof leaves and crap hitboxes for an FPS IS shit. Simple. Yes it might look great but theres more to a game then graphics.

Regarding EAs spyware. Its a matter of principle. I already have a very good DD service – its called Steam. I dont see any reason to install a 3rd party one to play one single game and one that has been FORCED on the playing community.

The fact EA behave like they do does nothing to install trust in them and I never will buy BF3 or any other piles of their crap until they stop acting the way they do.

@6 Yes Steam does give you the option to opt out. Something EA dont. And as proven during Beta for BF3 – Origin is pointless. You dont even use it to play the bloody game! Instead its a crap web browser offering.
EA do nothing to benefit their consumers. Its all about data mining, so they can sell it to 3rd parties and of course, use for their own research. Not too much of a problem but people should be given a choice to opt in or out.

@7 probably but I do have other great games to play instead so I wont be missing out on the grind…

@Grim … And the good news is — you are not on BF3! Thanks, as you would ruin a squad.
