Thursday, 10th November 2011 11:15 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Cryptic Games’ parent company Perfect World has announced the free-to-play switch for Star Trek Online will happen on january 17. The switch is slightly later than the expected end of year targeted switch for the MMO, which first launched back in 2010.

If only this game didn’t suck balls.

I still remember the excitement from before launch. I had joined a guild that had formed 2 whole years before. We had hundreds of dedicated members and an entire well structured rank system. Hell, we even had our own court in place to deal with offenders.

The entire thing collapsed within two weeks of launch. We had been led to expect something astounding and then were given something buggy, broken and shallow as hell.

By then of course, many of us had already bought lifetime subs, like myself. It was my first true MMO experience. Two years later and I now know enough that I should have realized that lifetimes available before launch were a warning sign. Hell, this game has practically been F2P from the start since they put the most effort into their stupid RMT store.
