Duty Officer System detailed in latest Star Trek Online dev blog entry

The latest developer blog entry for Star Trek Online has detailed the new Duty Officer System that will allow players to recruit and control the actions of their junior officers when the game goes free to play (F2P) later this year.

Detailed in the game's latest Path to F2P Dev Blog, players will receive their first set of duty officers once they are promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

The blog entry explains that duty officers can be used in two ways. First, they can be assigned to slots to "enhance the effectiveness" of your captain, both in space and on the ground. Secondly, duty officers can be allocated to tackle assignments, with rewards available upon their completion and varying levels of success based on the officers assigned.

The system is "intended to be as simple as it sounds, but getting the most from each assignment requires careful planning" according to Senior Systems Designer Geoff Tuffli. "Our goal with the Duty Officer System has been to make you feel truly like a captain, responsible for the success and well-being of your crew."

Thanks, Massively.
